Chungcheongbuk-do's Jecheon is known for its traditional Korean medicine. In Jecheon, where medicinal herbs and ingredients are abundant, there are restaurants certified under the "Yakchaerak" (Medicinal Herb Delight) system. "Yakchaerak" is a certification system provided exclusively to restaurants in Jecheon that serve dishes made with plenty of healthy medicinal ingredients unique to the region. When you visit Jecheon, you'll feel a significant improvement in your health just by dining at these certified restaurants. I recently visited a Yakchaerak-certified restaurant called "Daebo Myeongga." Although the food was based on Korean cuisine, it incorporated medicinal ingredients, making it a unique and flavorful experience.
I ordered the "Jecheon Yakcho Jaengban," which consisted of various mushrooms and medicinal ingredients combined with sliced beef. I also enjoyed the rice, which was served separately for men and women. This is because men and women have different Yin-Yang energies, so the ingredients added to the rice were different, and it was cooked in a stone pot accordingly. I've traveled to various restaurants during my time in Korea, but this was the first time I encountered a place that served rice separately like this, which made it quite special.
Jecheon, in particular, is a great destination for those interested in temple food and traditional Korean medicine. It's also perfect for foodies looking to explore unique culinary experiences. If you're tired of Seoul's typical cuisine and chain restaurants during your long-term travel in Korea, I highly recommend visiting Jecheon. Just keep in mind that the prices may not be as cheap as other places due to the use of medicinal ingredients. The average cost for a meal at a Yakchaerak-certified restaurant ranges from 20,000 to 40,000 KRW per person, but it guarantees a delicious and satisfying dining experience.
