Travel Agent Myth Series-Part 1

Let's cover a few misconceptions about travel agents. Many of you may have thought travel agents were a thing of the past. That couldn't be further from the truth. Our industry is thriving and continuing to grow every day. To help you get past those antiquated ideas of a lady in a cubicle with a headset and travel posters plastered all over the walls, we are starting a series in which we will debunk some of these myths about travel agents.

Myth #1 We Make a Salary Regardless of Whether You Book or Not

Sadly, this is not true. The only way we get paid for our services is by commission paid from the suppliers we use to book your travel components. That means that we are only paid if you book with us AND take the trip. It's similar to using a real estate agent to purchase a home-they put in work finding exactly what you want in a home, writing offers, getting the deal to go through and then they are paid after the closing by the party that sells the home. If you book an all inclusive vacation package with me for travel in March 2024, I won't get paid for my work until April/May 2024. Also, if I put in 10 hours of work researching and crafting the perfect travel itinerary for you and you take that and go book it yourself, I don't get paid for my time.

As a travel agent it is important to keep up with continuing education in the industry. Each week I make it a priority to complete classes online from the many travel suppliers I partner with. The knowledge gained in doing so makes me an even more valuable resource to my clients. This week I completed the highest level of training offered by Virgin Voyages. I can't wait to see the ship in person on our Riviera Maya cruise at the end of April!
