Tips for Purchasing Airline Tickets ✈️

The day of the week you choose to fly and buy can make a big difference in the price you pay.

You may have read from several sources that airline tickets are cheapest to buy on Tuesdays after 3 PM. While that may be true sometimes, that is not always the case. Buying airline tickets is a combination of luck and strategy, especially in 2022.

📈Purchasing tickets on a Friday or Saturday usually will be more expensive than buying earlier in the week. Typically, it is most expensive to fly on Fridays and Sundays, and cheaper to fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and sometimes even Saturdays.

⏰Timing matters - how far out you choose to buy (or how close) will affect the price you pay. According to statistics, the best time to buy a domestic flight in the U.S. is around 7 weeks out; and 10-14 weeks out for international flights. For traveling around the holidays, it’s best to book around 14 weeks in advance or as soon as you see a good deal.

The price of airline tickets can change multiple times a day. Consider tracking a route through Google Flights you may want to book down the line to receive price updates to your email.

Unexpected Travel Expenses & How to Avoid Them 💰

It’s hard to consider things that can go wrong on vacation. Unexpected travel expenses can have a large impact on your trip, especially when you’re not prepared for them.

1. Foreign Exchange Fees 🏦
Withdrawing foreign currency at the airport or during your trip at an ATM isn’t cheap. This usually comes with poor exchange rates and fees you would have avoided ordering prior. Ordering foreign currency through your bank prior to your trip will save you a ton of money.

2. Roaming Charges📱
Before leaving, call your cell phone carrier and ask what international plans they offer and find out how much the data roaming costs. You can also turn off your cellular data use by turning off roaming in your settings, you’ll still be able to receive phone calls and texts when connected to Wi-Fi.

3. Debit & CC Fees 💳
Plenty of CC companies have zero fees while traveling abroad, always call your bank and credit card company prior to your trip to avoid the surprise of potential hidden fees or your card being flagged for suspicious activity.

4. Tipping 💵
Tipping can be confusing while traveling regarding who, when and how much. It’s smart to include gratuities into your budget and researching tipping standards in the country you’re visiting. In Europe, it is typical to tip more modestly than you would in America. Always read the fine print, some hotels especially high-end properties automatically include gratuities for certain amenities, such as room service.

5. Patio Fees 🍽
Patio fees are something a lot of people don’t know of or expect when traveling to places like Europe. It may cost you more to sit outside versus inside in some restaurants. In places like Italy it is common to charge you a fee for sitting outside drinking a coffee. Some restaurants also typically charge a cover, which is a per-person charge to cover the cost of water or bread. Places will often make note at the bottom of a menu or signage.

How to find cheap flights for spontaneous travel 🔍

Traveling doesn’t always have to break the bank. A lot of people expect airfare to be the most expensive part of their trip, but it doesn’t have to be!

❌Searching a location based off specific dates -
Sometimes we have no choice but to travel somewhere over a designated weekend and there’s no way around it. This closes the gap of opportunity to find a good fare. But if you’re not locked into dates or location, you may be missing out on something better.

✅Searching then deciding dates and location -
Try searching flights to “anywhere” and see what the best options are. Find a destination that interests you and pick dates that work, instead of having specific dates in mind.

If you’re wanting to travel and are flexible on when and where, the best thing you can do is search all available options, you may be surprised what you come across.

Or if you do have a specific location in mind, try to wait until you come across a good deal.
“Mistake fares” aren’t all that common and can change within hours, but it’s not impossible to get lucky.

Both of my flights to Iceland and Italy were either around $500 or less, which is considered LOW for a typical flight into Rome or Reykjavik during peak season. The next day they were back up to $800+.

U.S Airports with the most delays & cancellations ✈️

Flight delays and cancellations are something to take into consideration when booking your trip and can happen for a number of reasons.

It’s important to understand why and when these inconveniences happen, and how to best prepare for them or potentially avoid them altogether.

⚠️Book an early flight:
Not only are morning flights typically cheaper, but your flight will have less of a chance of being affected by incoming flights prior to yours.

⚠️Research your flight’s on-time performance:
You can visit websites such as FlightStats, FlightAware or the U.S. Bureau of Transporation to check the statistics of your flight’s history of on-time performance for that airline carrier.

⚠️Book a direct flight:
Pay extra for a direct flight if there’s an option and you can afford to do so. You cut your chances in half of having a delay or cancellation to your final destination.

⚠️Avoid layovers in certain airports:
If possible, choose a route with a connecting flight that has a better record than an airport that is known for often delays and cancellations. Newark (EWR) is the top airport known for disruptions.

⚠️Check the weather:
Before you leave, check the weather for both arrival and departure airports. Consider booking a hotel nearby that has free cancellation in case you need to find a place to stay at the last moment before returning home. Ask the airline to be reimbursed, although they’re not required to, especially for weather reasons versus mechanical reasons.

I once spent over 7 hours sitting in JFK airport, delay after delay, to have our flight ultimately cancelled due to an incoming hurricane in Florida. I scrambled to find a hotel quickly while simultaneously being extremely frustrated and trying to beat the crowd 😅

Which airport have you had the worst experience in?

For those that are new here, I’m Lindsay! 👋🏼

I first started the Instagram page back in 2019 just to have a place for all my photos from traveling. I’d go on a trip, post a bunch of pictures, then disappear for a few months until my next.

In between I would plan trips I’d hope to take someday or help family and friends with theirs, just because it was something I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed doing.

I’ve started Itinerary Travels to provide others with resources to help make the most of their travels, to learn more about the world, and to inspire those to see more of it.

I can’t believe it’s now been 2 years since visiting Paris. I loved this city and the little I got to see of it, especially this view ✨

Stayed at the Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel with less than a 5 minute walk to the Eiffel Tower. It was slow season in Paris being January, making this a great and more affordable time to visit.

✅Do:
- Pay to go up the Eiffel Tower & buy your ticket online before
- Go to a dinner show like lido or moulin rouge
- Take a one-hour Siene river cruise around the city
- Learn a handful of French words before arriving

🚫Don’t:
- Wait in line for the Mona Lisa (unless you really can’t go without seeing it)
- Try to take photos of the Eiffel Tower at Place Du Trocadero in mid or late day
- Skip out on Versailles or Montmartre
- Waste your time walking far distances. Both the metro and Uber are efficient in Paris.

Hoping to return to France to see or next time 😍.
Did you know France is the number 1 most visited country? 🇫🇷

Big mistakes to avoid when booking travel ✈️

👉🏼1.) Having an invalid passport 😟
Many countries won’t allow entry if your passport expires within 6 months of your return date. Double-check your expiration date and don’t put off renewing it. Passport renewals (without paying to expedite) can take up to several months, depending on your city.

👉🏼2.) Booking short layovers 😅
Not only do you run the risk of missing your second flight if your first is delayed, but If you’re flying two different airlines they may not hold or be aware of your connection. This also decreases your chances of your checked bag making it onto your next flight. If you’re flying internationally, you need enough time to clear customs or possibly collect your bag and go through security again. Choose the 2-hour layover versus the 45 minute layover, unless you enjoy running in an airport. 🤷🏽‍♀️

👉🏼3.) Not purchasing travel insurance 😣
A lot of people question if they really NEED travel insurance. I’m guilty of this as well. Will something actually go wrong? But the one time it does, you’ll wish you spent that extra $100 to be compensated on a flight that lost your luggage, or get your money back if you suddenly have an emergency and can no longer travel.

👉🏼4.) Not reading entry requirements 😰
Entry requirements are constantly changing in each country. Most countries will require a specific negative test or vaccination record, while some also require a passenger locator form submitted at least 24-72 hours prior to arrival. If you don’t meet these requirements, you most likely won’t be going on your trip.

👉🏼5.) Booking the wrong airport 🤬
It’s not uncommon for flights to try to fly you into one airport and fly you out of another, without pointing this out enough for you to notice before purchasing your ticket. Always double-check the airport codes for all flights, you don’t want to arrive at one airport and fly out of another over an hour away.
