A few moments from Bacharach, Germany, the small medieval town on the Rhine River that I found out is NOT pronounced “Back-a-rack” as in Burt Bacharach like an American is likely to pronounce it.
Rather, it rolls off a German tongue so beautifully as “Baaccchhh,rrrraaccchhh”. Sadly, the closest I can come to this pronunciation is when I have swollen glands. 😂
It never fails to amaze me how two languages can make the same place sound so different. 😙

but, just a short walk away is St. Stephan’s Church which dates to 1340 and features incredible #stainedglass windows by Marc Chagall throughout. 😲💙💙💙
The Gothic church made of red sandstone was almost completely destroyed in WWII and the blue glow inside lends an other-worldly ethereal feeling. 👼

One great example of #slowtravel is off-season travel, when crowds are at their lowest and local economies benefit more from the needed tourism boost.
We’re so excited to be doing two back-to-back @UnTours this week to parts of the world most often visited in the summer: Germany’s #RhineValley and France’s #Alsace region. Then we’ll spend some time in Switzerland. 🏰
My first thought was 🥶, but it’s only 50F so that’s not bad at all, even coming from south FL. 😜

✅ The Bethesda Terrace and Arcade was built during the Civil War! 💣
✅ The ceiling of the lower level arcade at the Bethesda Terrace in NYC’s Central Park over 15,000 patterned Minton encaustic tiles designed by Jacob Wrey Mould. (In case you’re not aware, encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles where the surface pattern is not a product of the glaze but of the different colors of clay.) 15,000 of them!!! 🔸🔹🔸
✅ And originally, it was called ‘The Water Terrace’, but was renamed in 1868 when the “Angel of the Waters” statue was unveiled, which refers to the biblical healing of a disabled man at Bethesda, a story from the Gospel of John about an angel blessing the Pool of Bethesda, giving it healing powers. ❤️🩹⚡️
