What do I miss the most when I'm gone? Hmong people. I will miss speaking the language, having relatable experiences, and eating simple Hmong food such as boiled pork with veggies and pepper.
Like everywhere else, few people have heard of Hmong people. We're ethnic minorities everywhere we go. The most common guesses I got were Singaporean, Japanese, or Korean.
This is just more proof of how rare we are in a world full of eight billion people. If you're like me, you or your parents spent time in a refugee camp. Came to the US with little or nothing on a gamble that everything will be fine, and grew up through conditions such as poverty and classism.
Because we're so entwined with others from a similar background we grow numb to our stories. Many of us do not realize how beautiful or inspiring our stories are until our stories are grouped with others.
In a world where socioeconomics rules, many of us started with nothing and we've gone so far despite that. Strugglers of fate.
