Last year our valley became part of a new UNESCO World Heritage Site- Slate Landscapes of North Wales. Quarried landscapes can often be stark and imposing. Luckily (for us!) the Gorseddau Quarry at the head of the valley closed after only a few years, leaving most of the land untouched, and a wealth of historical buildings and infrastructure in place. You can't miss the mill as you drive up to Ysgoldy, and the bed of the tramway runs right past the back garden. The mill, quarry, old Treforys village, and numerous other buildings can all be easily explored on foot from the cottage. (This article and video contain some beautiful footage.)
And if you feel that no abandoned quarry is complete without a zip wire then Zip World is only a 30 minute drive away!
