Friday at Fisherman's village 🎊

We decided to write about this place specifically before Friday 😃 Fishermen's Village - is an area in Bophut, Samui. It is one of the island's oldest inhabited areas. Neighboring areas, which are also in the north of the island - are Maenam and Bangrak.

On Fridays, starting from about six, a number of streets close for the sake of the "Night Market" and a Friday promenade. And this is the exact time to visit there.

A very large amount of stalls of all kinds, delicious street food, clothes, all sorts of souvenirs made from coconut, bars, restaurants, parties, karaoke, massages, music and great atmosphere - that's what you'll find there on Friday. The night market reaches the promenade on the seaside, and there, on the beach you can also enjoy a fire show at Coco Tam's.

Every other day it's a nice area to walk around, but on Friday it's really a mini street festival. It is recommended to arrive pretty early, starting at six (about), because the stands work until midnight and some begin to fold even earlier.
For Latin dance lovers - every Friday in Fisherman’s village there is a salsa party at Greenlight cafe 🎉 .

EFFECTIVE FROM 1 JULY 🎊

Starting July 1st, the mandatory outdoor mask in Thailand is canceled. Thailand is recovering from Covid-19 and fast on track to working as things did before covid hit.

Here are some of the changes that you should notice and look out for:

The whole nation will be declared a green surveillance zone. Testing is required only for those with respiratory symptoms.

Bars, pubs, and nighttime establishments can now operate after midnight!

The ban of alcohol in hotels at during the hours of 2-5 pm has also been lifted.

Thai Pass is no longer required!

This is great news, as it allows for anyone who wants to visit and explore all that Thailand has to offer.
Are you excited about the news ?

THAILAND LEGALIZED CANNABIS😊

The Kingdom of Thailand has decided to legalize ma*****na permanently and permit it to be used, becoming the first country in Asia to do so. By doing so, we believe, creating an even bigger flow of tourists in the future.

Thailand's Ministry of Health excluded cannabis and ma*****na from the fifth category controlled substances list as of June 9.

The innovation mainly aims to support “Thai enthusiasts” who grow cannabis at home and use it for medical purposes to reduce pain and reduce stress and fatigue and in food production.

It is expected that four thousand convicts spent in prison for smoking or distributing ma*****na will be released once the new law comes into force.

However, it should be specified - smoking ma*****na in public places (unfit for this purpose) will be considered illegal, and the amount of the main hallucinogenic compound in the substance, which cannot be more than 0.2% - will be strictly controlled by the state.

Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chang-Ocha also urged ma*****na users to act responsibly, warning that the state will control consumption and behavior of users and producers.

HOW DO YOU PERCEIVE THE NEWS? ARE YOU FOR LEGALIZATION? 😁🍃

COST OF LIVING IN THAILAND 🌴

Probably one of the most common questions we get - is it expensive to live in Thailand?

We will start with the fact that we personally compare not to Russia (some of us haven't been there since childhood), but with Israel. Or with Europe or Canada, where we have traveled. Compared to these countries, almost everything is cheaper here. Regarding Russia, it is worth taking into account the ruble's exchange rate, which changes a lot. It's not what's getting more expensive here, it's the exchange rate, which recently became 1 baht (local currency) = 1.69 rubles. 😅.

Plus, you can always find really good cheap options here. Starting with food and ending with accommodation. For example, if you are coming for more than 2 weeks, it's probably worth renting a house or apartment. Since the hotel will be more expensive. Or another example, food in Thai markets or local cafes are 2-5-10 times cheaper than European restaurants. It all depends on your appetite and habitual standard of living.

Next, we will provide a few options regarding the island on which we live - Samui. This is a rather expensive island (in the same Thailand, but on the metre part, for example in Pattaya, almost everything is cheaper):

💲 Renting a house - you can find a small house or apartment from 10-12 thousand baht and infinity. There are villas and at a thousand dollars a day.

💲Food portion - from 20-30 baht food for import in the market, from 50 baht in local restaurants. In higher level restaurants (European, for example) - on average from 150-200 Baht per serving and above.

💲 Fruits (you should buy seasonal ones, the price is better, and here it is constantly the season of different fruits). Mangoes in season from 30 baht per kg, bananas from 30 baht/kg (bananas are constantly in season), watermelon in season from 15 baht and so on, mangosteen in season from 30 Baht per kg and so on.

💲 Hotels - you can find simple and clean hotels in the center from 1500 baht per room per night. Hostel beds are cheaper if desired, 600-800. But 4-5* hotels strongly depend on the season and location.

💲 Scooter rental, on average, 200-300 baht per day. If monthly, you can find about 3000 baht per month. Normal car rental from 800-1000 baht per day. It is cheaper by the month. But now because of covid changes there are also very cheap options. So is renting a house.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY EXPERIENCE OF LIVING IN OTHER COUNTRIES? WHERE WAS MORE EXPENSIVE / CHEAPER? 😁

A LITTLE ABOUT THE LOTUS 💮

Personally for us, this flower is a symbol of Thailand. 🇹🇭 We think it is a favorite for many Thais. The flower is pretty common here, quite literally everywhere. Today’s post is about how Thais treat the lotus:

🌸Through understanding the beauty of the lotus flower—a beloved of water and sun, Buddha taught people to understand the beauty and harmony of the surrounding world.

🌸 One of the Buddhist myths tell that immediately after the birth of Buddha, a shower of lotus flowers began. The little Buddha immediately stood up and walked with his feet, and where the infant's foot touched the ground, a huge lotus flower appeared.

🌸In the Buddhist understanding, the lotus, growing out of muddy, dirty water, remains pure and beautiful - just like the Buddha born in the human world. According to another legend, the Buddha, having attained enlightenment, emerged from a lotus in the form of flame, a symbol of achieving true enlightenment and harmony. The throne of the Buddha in the form of the lotus signifies harmony in the universe, the pinnacle of spiritual perfection.

🌸When visiting temples, Thai people bring with them a lotus flower, a candle and an aromatic wand - clamping them between the palms to make a prayer.

🌸By the way, lotuses have a beautiful, sophisticated aroma, but they smell only one hour a day, before dawn. It is at this moment that flowers are collected for various purposes: both magical and quite mundane - because, besides everything said, Thais often use lotus in cooking. Lotus roots can be eaten in any form - they grind and make flour for tortillas, or sugar it, and then the pieces of the root resemble marmalade and have a really amazing taste. Lotus is also used for flavoring teas, and lotus nuts make a very useful substitute for coffee.

DID YOU KNOW THESE FACTS ABOUT LOTUS? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER? 😊

THAI HOUSEHOLD 🏡

In today’s post, I thought I would share my observations about Thai houses. About how they differ from the ones we are used to. 😊💁 It is not about Bangkok, as the capital lives by its own rules.

🏠 Many traditional Thai houses are partially or fully constructed of wood or stand on pillars. We are talking about old buildings, modern buildings are increasingly being built with concrete and without pillars.

🏠 The absolute majority of Thais live in private homes. Again, Bangkok is different.

🏠 Next to every house or group of houses - you will find a spirit house! And gifts to spirits will definitely be brought there every day - fruits, drinks, flowers, perfumes, etc. Yup, even in the 21st century

🏠 All the Thai families we know personally are part or full time farming (in Samui it's usually fruit farming). They actually like and know how to grow different plants.

🏠 A Thai's house may simply not have a common concept kitchen. But there will be a rice cooker. Rice beats every other dish

🏠 It is customary to enter Thai houses completely barefoot, taking off your shoes at the entrance. Slippers are not included, as you may understand.

🏠 Every Thai home and business we checked always has a "bide" added to the toilet.

🏠 In Thailand, it's perfectly normal to sit on the floor when eating or talking to someone. Although there are tables and chairs in the room

🏠 Thais do not eat Thai food with chopsticks! They often eat with spoons, and if they use a fork, it’s usually to put the food on the spoon and eat from the spoon

🏠 The Thai people often have some inexplicable passion for bright colors. A house can have orange, blue and yellow walls simultaneously. No color combination to be heard of.

🏠 In every Thai house you will be sure to find a portrait of the king (usually the late Rama 9). This is not a must, the Thais really respected him a lot, if not to say worshiped him.

WHICH FACT SURPRISED YOU? 😊 MAYBE YOU ARE A LITTLE THAI IN SOMETHING?

THAILAND. TIPS FOR A BEGINNING TRAVELER. PART 2 🌺🐾

We hope part one was interesting for you, so we will continue 😊. And so a few more tips to help you enjoy this beautiful country. ⠀ ⠀

🏊 Do not step on corals when swimming. First, it can seriously damage the coral reef as well as the entire ecosystem it creates. Secondly, you can seriously cut or injure your leg - corals are very sharp and marine inhabitants often rest on them - like sea urchins, for example. All self-respecting sea tours give customers free life jackets - if you don't want to stress while staying afloat - just swim in them. ⠀ ⠀

🙏 Stay open minded, dont be scared when you first come. Give yourself a couple of days to acclimatize. Thailand is not Europe or Maldives. The local Asian color - along with specific smells - takes time to "digest".

🍍 Try local fruit! Be sure to try unusual fruits, which cannot be found in your latitude. And even more "ordinary" - like pineapples, in Thailand are completely different - incredibly sweet and juicy.

🏍 Be careful with motorcycles and mopeds! Yes, it seems as simple as bicycling, but Thailand is sadly notorious for its enormous amount of road deaths. Left-handed traffic, together with the mountainous terrain of most of the country, makes riding a moped especially dangerous. If you have no driving experience in such conditions - or better yet a driving license, you should not spoil your vacation with accidents.

🥛 Do not drink from under the faucet. Local tap water is not good enough to drink. Washing/showering is no problem, but if you do not want intestinal disorders, buy bottled or filtered water.

🎯 Come with insurance. Government hospitals are much cheaper... but from experience - it is much easier and nicer to pay nothing (everything is paid by insurance) and to be served in a good private clinic. ⠀ ⠀

🧘 Try something new... for example - yoga. In Thailand, everything around follows similar practices. Relaxation and good mood are the key to a good vacation. Sabai sabai - as the Thai say😍!

TIPS FOR BEGINNER TRAVELERS 😉 THAILAND - PART 1

⏱ ⠀ Do not rush and plan everything in advance. Thailand - is a country where time goes differently. Excessive haste, nervousness are not honored here. Also it's tropical climate. So one day it can be sunny and the next it can be rainy. That's why our advice is not to make a checklist running around Thailand. Explore each place, take your time, plan maximum for a couple of days ahead - including entertainment. The weather forecast for a week/two ahead is almost always false. ⠀

⠀ 🤫 Don't yell/raise your voice at the locals. Be patient, they don't have to know your language perfectly. Thais are accustomed to speaking quietly, calmly. For them, to go with raised tones or, moreover, shouting is unacceptable.

⠀🎎 Local laws very clearly explain that talking badly about the royal family is nonsense. Try not to bring up this topic in this context when communicating with Thai people. ⠀ ⠀

💉 The death penalty still exists in the Kingdom. Like for selling drugs. Do not mess with this topic under any circumstances.

⠀ 🍜 Many Thai dishes are very spicy! So if you are not used to chili peppers several times a day, we suggest you learn the sentence "please, not spicy" - so that you get less chili.

⠀ 🏯 Respect the dress code. Many temples have a certain dress code - usually - the shoulders, chest and legs above the knee should be covered. Don’t disrespect and come to holy spots for locals wearing a swimsuit or a naked torso.

⠀ 💸 Bargain! This certainly does not apply to brand stores and supermarkets. But if you shop in the market / in a tent / in a small shop / stall - do not forget to bargain! If there are no clear price tags, then the price may vary. Bargain calmly and with a smile, then both you and the seller will be satisfied.

⠀ 🚖 Don't get caught in the deceptive tricks for tourists. For example, a famous trick in Bangkok - when a taxi driver tells a tourist that the temple he was going to visit is closed today - but he will take you out for shopping. Don't do it! This "shopping thing" will be extremely meddling and will eat up a large portion of your budget.

⠀⠀ To be continued ..

THAI SAYINGS 🤔

Periodically we consider to start learning Thai, and we start reading and studying related topics. We came across some very interesting Thai sayings (proverbs, phrases), which we decided to share with you, because they give you a sense of the culture of the Thai people:

🌴 ช้างเผือกเกิดในป่า
White elephants are born in the forest.
(Good things are hard to find)

🌴 สิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่งมีความเกิดขึ้นเป็นธรรมดา
Whatever is born is to die.
(Nothing lasts forever under the moon)

🌴ช้างตายทั้งตัวเอาใบบัวปิดไม่มิด
A dead elephant cannot be covered by a lotus leaf.
(big problems can't be hidden).

🌴 กินน้ำพริกถ้วยเดี่ยว
Eat the spicy chili sauce only from one cup.
(A man still returns to one woman)

🌴 ไก่ได้พลอย
A chicken gets the gems.
(About a man who has something good but does not know about it. Or throwing gemstones in front if pigs).

🌴 งามแต่รูปจูบไม่หอม
Great look but bad breath.
(A beautiful, but not a very smart girl)

🌴 หนีเสือปะจระเข้
Run away from a tiger and face a crocodile.
(Jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. Going from something bad to something even worse)

🌴 ข้าวใหม่ปลามัน

TEN MORE INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THAILAND 🌴🌸😁

Thailand is an exotic country and many things here seem unusual to us. So we have prepared 10 more unusual facts about the Land of Smiles for you.

1🍍 The population of Thailand is only about half the population of Russia. However, the area of Thailand is 33 times smaller.

2🍍 In all local cinemas before the show, the anthem plays first. The anthem should be listened standing up.

3🍍 The "Red Bull", which "gives you wings", was invented in Thailand. The original Thai drink was called "Krating Daeng" and was very popular with tuk-tuk drivers. Krating Deng means Red Bull.

4🍍 Thais will absolutely not accept yelling and raised tones. They don't want to deal with such people.

5🍍 Large Buddha statues and sculptures are prohibited from being transported out of Thailand.

6🍍 Thailand ranks first in terms of the number of monks per capita. About 370,000 monks and novice live here.

7🍍 In Thailand, people greet with a gesture - "wai", which is different by age. For example, when greeting children, fold their palms at neck level so that their thumbs are on the chest. The first "hi" is from the one who is younger. In response from the older Thai people receive the same gesture, just not higher than the breast. There are some remarks to welcome members of the royal family. In such cases, they make a "high wi" - that is, the hands should be near the forehead, and the thumb should touch the nose bridge.

8 🍍 Thai writing has its own unique features. You can’t find gaps or punctuation marks in it. As an exception, gaps are between numbers when it comes to complex calculations, as well as between surname and name.

9🍍 Unlike Cambodia, Laos or Vietnam, Thailand is NOT among the poorest countries in Asia.

10🍍 In Thailand, Father's Day and Mother's Day are celebrated on the birthdays of the King and Queen of Thailand.

STRANGE THAI LAWS 😯

You can find unusual rules and laws in every country. Thailand is certainly no exception. Below we will list a few strange and even blatant laws that are still in force in this country:

1️⃣ It is forbidden to discuss the royal family in a negative way, criticize and so on. The punishment can be up to 20(! ) years in prison.

2️⃣ It is prohibited to export Buddha statues over 15 cm in height from Thailand

3️⃣ Abortion is prohibited (except abortion based on medical evidence). However, this law is likely to change soon

4️⃣ Many tourist beaches are completely banned from smoking.

5️⃣ It is forbidden to collect or take corals and shells from the beaches. Regarding collecting them on the beaches - we have not heard of cases of fines, but if they accidentally find shells in the luggage - you will have to pay a fine and say goodbye to the shells.

6️⃣ It is forbidden to hang foreign flags. Not many people know that in Thailand you still can't hang or raise flags of foreign countries in public places. Exceptions are embassies, consulates, diplomatic residences, ships, planes and the like.

7️⃣ E-ci******es, vapes, IQOS and snus have been banned in Thailand since 2014. A fine of up to 1 million baht can be issued for violation of the law. You can even end up behind bars, up to 5-10 years.

8️⃣ Do not touch monks, even if you have a very friendly attitude. This is especially true of women, with whom Buddhist monks are not allowed to have contact.

9️⃣ Thailand bans import of fighting dogs, alcohol of more than one liter per adult, ci******es of more than 200 pieces per person, pirate copies of anything, etc.

1️⃣0️⃣ Sunbathing on local beaches topless or completely naked is strictly forbidden (although everyone knows that unspoken nudist beaches still exist).

WHICH LAW SURPRISED YOU THE MOST? WHAT DO YOU AGREE WITH? AND WHAT DO YOU DON'T AGREE WITH? 😊

SIAM CATS, RUSSIAN KING AND MUCH MORE 🇹🇭

We are glad that you people liked the previous posts with interesting facts about Thailand. Let's continue 😊.

🌴 The alphabet in Thailand is the second largest (number of letters) in the world. More letters only in Khmer, which is a relative of Thai, which is spoken in Cambodia.

🌴 Thailand is among the top five rice exporters, often occupying a the number one position in the world. By the way, rice is the main food for half of the Earth's population, which makes this agriculture the most important on the planet.

🌴 Thailand is home of the world famous Siamese cats. (Siam, as you read in our other post is an ancient name in Thailand). There are many stories stating that it was the Russian tsar who contributed to the "spread" of Siamese cats around the world. Siamese King Rama V presented Nicholas II with 200 Siamese cats. Nicholas provided him with a guard unit to guard the Grand Royal Palace as a thank you for this gift. Siamese cats were bought by ladies from the highest society. Blue-eyed cats were loved by bohemian - actors, artists, musicians, writers. It was this gift that made this breed popular outside Thailand.

🌴 Speaking in high tones is not acceptable in this country. And a smiling person does not cause association with a fool, smiling back is the norm in Thailand. That's why Thailand is often called the land of smile.

🌴 Sawatdee kaa/kap, which is known to every tourist, only began to be used during the Second World War. Before that, the residents met each other with the question: "Have you eaten?"

What fact surprised you the most? 😁

NATURE THERAPY AT HIN LAD WATERFALLS 🌴

Sometimes you want to merge with nature, get away from people and just enjoy simple joys - fresh air, the silence of the forest, clean cool water... Hin Lad Falls (or Hin Lat) is a suitable place for this.

They are located far from the super touristy and busy popular spots of the island, in the south. If you're driving on the main road, turn right at the intersection of Naton Hospital (it's on the left). Then a couple minutes straight until you get to the parking lot. After passing several tents with street food, go up the stairs - there you will see the entrance to the path - to the waterfalls. The road to the waterfall isn't difficult, there are markings, but it does lead through the jungle - our advice would be to bring the right shoes and mosquito repellent. Look around at the amazing trees here! Lianas! 😍

Hin Lad has three thresholds. Don't expect anything like Niagara here or even Namuanga 1. Hin Lad is more about seclusion, hiking and active recreation. The waterfalls here are small but the water is clean and very pleasant and there are several swimming places such as natural mini pools or baths with a great jungle view. Lets we forget ! Hin Lad waterfalls are small, and therefore in the dry season they almost dry up.
