Arnarnesgöng is one of Iceland’s oldest tunnels, carved through the rugged Westfjords in the late 1940s to connect Súðavík and Ísafjörður. At just 30 meters long, it’s not much to look at—yet, thanks to a sneaky bend, it appears much longer as you approach, hiding what’s on the other side.
Last summer, a few bikepackers shared their story of being fooled by the infamous turn. Thinking they were about to enter a long, dark tunnel, they pulled over to strap on every light they had—standard protocol for Iceland’s tunnels. But, truth be told, this might be the one tunnel where you can get away without the extra visibility.
