Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Krabi
A short drive around the coast from Krabi, Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve was designed to reflect the area's Muslim history, with soaring red ochre walls, oversized keyhole doorways, candlelit reflective pools and lush gardens redolent with frangipani and jasmine. Looking across Phang Nga Bay's prehistoric landscape of rugged limestone karsts, the rambling villas come with extravagant pillared bathtubs, double-height hand-painted murals and beds so big you could roll around all night and never touch your lover. The resort's movie star good looks have earned it a number of starring roles, including the setting for the wedding in The Hangover 2. Lee Cobaj

Conrad Maldives
Having staked its claim on the beautiful all-natural twin islands of Rangali and Rangali Finolhu over a quarter of a century ago, the Conrad's location remains one of the best of any resort in the Maldives – with long, broad stretches of sand wrapped around both jungly islands and manta rays pirouetting in the channel between. But there have been changes afoot: the installation of The Muraka (the world's first underwater hotel suite) in 2018 was followed by a revamp of the cathedral-like beach villas in 2019, while the water villas got their turn this year. New chef Christian Pedersen has breathed new life into all 12 restaurants. From the sand-between-your-toes breakfast to the healthy seared scallop and asparagus salads to the tasting menus at underwater restaurant Ithaa, his food never fails to impress. Resistance is futile but you can work off any excesses by paddle-boarding around the lagoon staring at shimmering parrotfish and sashaying reef sharks through a mesmeric turquoise lens.

Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston is absolute heaven for foodies (musts: the modern twist on Southern cuisine at Husk and Fig, the unbelievably fresh oysters and seafood at 167 Raw and the Ordinary), history buffs, and architecture nerds. It's probably also one of the most introspective cities in the South, making concerted efforts to confront its painful and complicated past (be sure to check out the South Carolina Historical Society Museum and the Gibbes Museum of Art for important lessons). Right in the heart of the city is the palatial Charleston Place, a Belmond Hotel, a bastion of luxurious Southern hospitality with more than 400 rooms, all outfitted in elegant touches like mahogany beds and marble showers.

Mori Art Museum
The Mori Art Museum, the flashiest member of the Roppongi Art Triangle, sits atop the 52nd and 53rd floors of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower. At about $14 for entrance to the main exhibition hall, this museum is on the steeper side for Tokyo’s cultural attractions. Still, that ticket grants you access to blockbuster works of contemporary art by the likes of Ai Weiwei and Dinh Q. Lê, not to mention a 360-degree panorama from one of the tallest buildings in town. Curators here do an exceptional job of creating exhibitions that are as thought-provoking as they are Instagrammable.

Tokyo Disneyland
The Magic Kingdom needs no introduction, and this Japanese spin on the formula is a winner. Two separate theme parks, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, make up this mammoth entertainment complex east of the city. The former, which opened in 1983, was the park’s first international spin-off and has a retro vibe very much in sync with its Floridian and Californian counterparts. Tokyo DisneySea, which opened in 2001, is full of slickly produced features exclusive to Japan. From international Disney classics like Space Mountain and Tomorrowland to Tokyo-specific rides like Sinbad's Storybook Voyage, the array of options here is dizzying. Be sure to catch the nocturnal Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dreamlights, which features larger-than-life characters like Elsa from Frozen illuminated in LED. In DisneySea, ride a gondola to Fantasmic!, an extravaganza on the water in which Mickey Mouse from the Sorcerer’s Apprentice battles a life-size dragon with lasers, fire, and all manner of stage effects.

Toyosu Market
For years, Tsukiji Market, the world’s largest seafood market where bluefin the size of baby belugas sold for millions, seemed at odds with the popular tourist attraction it had become. Workers trying to move fish by the metric tonne often bristled at the sight of travelers gaping at the messy spectacle. The new Toyosu Market, on a man-made island, removes the friction by taking visitors out of the action and placing them in the hermetically sealed, glass-encased observation gallery. There’s still a certain thrill in witnessing it all, even from above. While it’s hard not to feel a twinge of nostalgia while roaming the sanitized reincarnation of Tsukiji, business at the market goes on. Plan your visit around an exceptional omakase breakfast at Sushi Dai or Ryu Sushi, followed by a relaxed walk-through. Be sure to leave time to snap a few photos of the Tokyo skyline from the rooftop garden on top of the Intermediate Wholesale Market Building. Instead of hunting for souvenirs at Uogashi Yokocho in the Intermediate Wholesale Market Building, head to the mainland and old Tsukiji Outer Market, which still has a tangle of historic shops and restaurants.

Virtu
This is a place that people get gussied up for, especially at night. The space is theatrical, with art deco-inspired fixtures and platform seating that provides ample opportunity for people-watching. Head barman Joshua Perez brings his early training in flavor science—at New York’s Booker and Dax—to bear in seasonal expressions such as the velvet-smooth Christmas eggnog spiked with Remy Martin 1738, or a summertime frozen margarita made with Lillet Blanc and fresh white peach. The signature Takara is a compelling blend of Japanese whisky, chartreuse and a brandy-like spirit called Denki Bran, which originated in Tokyo in 1893.

The Bellwood
Modeled after an early 20th-century Japanese coffee house, this swanky watering hole is fitted with modern-retro touches like a stained glass panel bearing the bar’s name, bookended by images of Mount Fuji and a martini under the moon. The main space is great for after-work drinks or late-night tipples, but the bar recently opened a glass-encased private room to host a series of food-and-cocktail pairing experiments. Witty twists on classic cocktails are prepared with flair. Start light with the Kome Tonic, made with rice-based shochu, then explore the seasonal menu: Tango Mule made with gin and Fernet Branca laced with roasted mate, or the Okushibu Fashioned with bourbon, kinako soy powder and a hint of bitter mugmort.
