Nowadays, it is Mill Race Park (Galt, Ontario). At the turn of the 20th century, it was the site of Cowan & Co., Ltd.

In 1896, one of its dynamos was installed just north of Alexandria, in the Delisle River power station (perhaps a topic for a future post…). This introduced electricity to 300 Alexandrian homes & businesses: a forecast of future hydro development.

Aujourd’hui, c’est le parc Mill Race (à Galt, en Ontario). Au tournant du 20e siècle, c’était l’emplacement de « Cowan & Co., Ltd. »

En 1896, une dynamo de ladite entreprise fut installée au nord d’Alexandria, dans la centrale de la rivière Delisle (peut-être le sujet d’une publication future…). 300 maisons & commerces alexandriennes furent donc munies d’électricité : une prévision des développements ultérieurs d’hydroélectricité.

Welcome to the Alexander Rink! This is where hockey was played during the early 1900s. I’m plenty of decades late, which means I don’t have to follow this rule from a 1905 game between the Painters and Trimmers of Munro & McIntosh: “No one is allowed to leave the ice excepting at half time, unless he can prove himself dead”. 😮

Bienvenue à la patinoire Alexander ! On y joue au hockey au début des années 1900. J’y suis arrivé quelques décennies en re**rd, ce qui m’exempte de suivre cette règle d’un match entre les Painters et Trimmers de la compagnie Munro & McIntosh, en 1905: « Personne n’est permis de quitter la glace sauf à mi-temps, à moins qu’il ne soit mort ». 😮

I recently visited J.T. Schell’s burial site at Hillview Cemetery. One of the primary employers during Alexandria’s Golden Age, his name is largely forgotten. He served as M.P. for Glengarry County from 1900-1908 and his cheesebox manufacturing company stood at the current site of the North Glengarry Fire Department, Kenyon St.

J’ai récemment visité le lieu d’enterrement de J.T. Schell au cimetière Hillview. Bien qu’il ait été l’un des employeurs principaux durant l’âge d’or d’Alexandria, son nom est largement oublié. Il fut député de Glengarry de 1900 à 1908 et son entreprise fabriquant des caisses à fromage se situait à l’endroit actuel du Département d’incendie Glengarry Nord, rue Kenyon.

Ce soir j'ai eu le plaisir de présenter le tour inauguré, version française, à une famille charmante. Comment décrire cette expérience? Ce fut un grand succès! Un message bref pour mes chers francophones: ce n'est que le début😉
