Can you smell it? Today was an immersion into the aromatic world of truffles…& this is the season of the black ones. In Tuscany that means we can only go to one area, the charming hamlet village of San Miniato & its surrounding fields & forests. Did you know that truffles can fetch thousands of dollars per pound? 😲 Today, we ventured into Savitar Tartufi with our friend Marco and his father Claudio, to uncover more about these culinary treasures. Then, after a climb up to the Castello di Federico to work off lunch, we set off to Pisa, yes, where the famous leaning tower stands! And to cap off this epic day, we had a spectacular dinner at the charming restaurant La Cecca. Here are some general safety tips that you may not think about but can prepare you for worst case scenarios while traveling abroad.
1. Make a copy of your passport & other important documents: These serve as backups in case of loss or theft and help facilitate efficient assistance from authorities or embassy staff. Having copies can provide peace of mind for unexpected situations while traveling. We like to keep a paper copy as well as a photo on our phone!
2. Let a close friend or family member know where you are staying and give them a number to contact in case they can’t reach you. Make sure they also know how to dial the country code (as an example, the country code for Italy is +39)
3. If you take prescription medication, ask your doctor to help you understand a suitable alternative in whichever country you are traveling. Brand names will most likely vary between countries and it’s important to have a back-up plan in case you run out or lose your medication. It’s not always the easiest navigating a pharmacy in another country, so take the extra precautions in case you ever run into this situation.

A question we frequently get asked - is travel insurance worth it? The simple answer is - yes! And here’s why:
1️⃣ Emergency Medical Coverage: Unfortunately illnesses or accidents can happen anywhere. With travel insurance, you’re covered for medical emergencies, making sure you get the care you need without breaking the bank. Expect the best but prepare for the worst.
2️⃣ Trip Cancellations or Interruptions: Life is unpredictable, and plans can change last minute. Travel insurance covers trip cancellations or interruptions due to unforeseen circumstances.
3️⃣ Lost or Delayed Baggage: As you may already know, airlines sometimes drop the ball when it comes to your luggage and it may not arrive with you at your destination. Travel insurance can come to the rescue, at least when it comes to compensating you for it.

Travel Tip Tuesday: Embracing Other Cultures 🌎🇮🇹
🍝In Italy, life has its own rhythm - different from what we’re used to in the States. One example being that meals are not just about the food, but a cherished time to really connect with friends or family and enjoy each course. Dinners start later and may last a few hours. We love really embracing this chance to slow down from our normal pace of life, take our time, have conversation, sip some wine, and relax.
🗣️Navigating through different languages can be a challenge, but it’s also an opportunity. Learn a few phrases and watch how it opens doors to authentic experiences. Italians are especially friendly and patient when trying to learn the language - and most do speak English!
🍷It’s easy to stick with what you know. Challenge yourself to go outside your comfort zone. Meander along the off-beaten path, drink the local wine you may have never heard of, try new cuisines that are specific to the area you are in, and take your time sipping an espresso at the local café.
✈️Remember, travel is about embracing the unknown and finding joy in the differences. It’s not always convenient or what we are used to, but isn’t that the beauty of it?

-Never exchange your cash into euro unless your bank offers a competitive exchange rate! You can find the most updated exchange rates on the Wall Street Journal
-Don’t exchange cash at the airports when you land. You will usually get a very poor exchange rate!
-The best way to receive euro is from a bank ATM in the country you are going to (this is how we at Jason’s Journeys prefer to receive euro) and keep in mind, most places in Italy will accept all major credit cards so an abundant of cash is not necessary, but nice to have some on hand
-Some credit cards have a foreign transaction fee of 3% meaning the bank will charge you 3% on top of every purchase you make abroad. Check with your bank if your card has a foreign transaction fee
-Our favorite credit cards with zero transaction fee: Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve, Capital One Venture X, Amex Platinum, Bank of America Travel Rewards, and more
-When using your credit card abroad, always choose to pay in the local currency as you will typically receive a better exchange rate from your bank than if you choose to pay USD

Travel Tip Tuesday: we suggest purchasing a tracking device for your luggage and other personal items while traveling (or even when you’re at home)! It’s no secret that there have been delays in luggage reaching its destination. These devices give you peace of mind knowing exactly where they are at all times. At Jason’s Journeys we use and recommend them for almost everything including our backpack, wallet, purse, and suitcases. You can never be too proactive!
