As someone who was JUST driving through Maine this week, my heart goes out to the mass shooting victims in Lewiston who are senseless plagued by gun violence. "The Pinetree State" holds a special place in my heart as the center of my college experience. So many milestones started here. It is why I came back as an Alumni Council Member. But, for every beautiful moment I learned from, I also found dangerously pertinent warnings of how violence can grow from the most close-knit of communities. This swing state with very purple politics was where Wabanaki Natives were ripped from families to fill up boarding schools across the East Coast. It was where students of color were openly turned away because of racist stereotypes. It is where loose enforcement of firearm carry laws foster a ticking time bomb......If we learn anything from this recent tragedy, it is that shootouts also happen in rural spaces with beautiful backdrops and "patriotic good guys." In a state of 1 million Americans, only one in a million is needed to inflict pain once all the warning signs are ignored. I pray for our affected families and the moral conscience of policymakers who can take swift action now. Cheers to Keeping Maine Beautiful 🫎🫐🌲

The Heart of Dinner runs have become a highlight for many neighbors who want to see fresh, culturally-responsive meals delivered to our elders. Uptown NYC is becoming more and more of a rainbow with as much as 9% of East Harlemites identifying as Asian. I loved finding an opportunity to plug back into this beautiful circle of Community servants. Please look them up and support where you can. Swipe to see my cartooning skills up close!

Happy Friday from the polls! Now that I'm back from DC with a vengeance, expanding democracy will be a top priority as I hit the streets and knock on doors. I loved hanging with the NYC Votes crew in The Hub -- and our neighbors absolutely LOVED the swag. The elections are on November 7th, and you can still check your registration until October 28th! We'll be on Bruckner & Alexander this Tuesday afternoon (with more locations to come) in case you're around. Here's to making our voices heard and repping Uptown interests as best as possible.

¡¡Hispanic Heritage Month en El Barrio!! A lot of Latinos spend so much time repping our own countries that we risk losing sight of our neighbors and extended family. Sometimes it's refreshing to look at the big picture and celebrate all that we have in common across the Americas. So proud of the students at Esperanza Prep who showed off a piece of the world for all of New York to see. I loved hearing about Social Studies classes that introduced some to the fine arts, or dances that helped other connect to their parents. Also got my passport stamps in order! Education is truly a great equalizer that needs to be made more accessible to our children. ¡Que viva la familia!

It is said that the destiny written on Rosh Hashanah is sealed on Yom Kippur. It was great to connect with other students of faith at the Israeli Embassy while reflecting on my travels in the region. We spoke about the effects of climate change and political displacement as causes worthy of our action. Here's to hoping that we can pursue more dialog and equitable foreign policy with our Levantine families 🇮🇱⚖️🇺🇸

Happy to be there for my big bro Will's wedding day in one of the most beautiful event spaces Uptown. In awe at the growth and milestones I've been able to share with neighbors who are teaching me about the city I love. For William, I've learned to strive for a mind that is open and focused on the bigger picture. The smaller perks will come along with faith & preparation, as I saw first-hand with the dozens of friends who surprised him from the Bronx Chamber of Commerce next door! Congrats to him and Alia as they start a new chapter as a family. Wedding season continues!

Neighborly News Report #1,855: Thanks to our 100s of 311 calls, 134th & Lincoln is finally being drained and weatherization ahead of more rainy days this fall! One of the first lessons I learned in Congress (Team Torres LFG) is how the federal government can be a valuable partner in local "bread and butter" issues through considerate coordination. In fact, it was right here thanks to a now-friend who called our office for help enlisting the Sanitation Department. This specific corner was plagued by sewage backup, annoying flooding, and wet litter for years since the onset of the pandemic. If you ever want to gather some neighbors and pool together our phones, I'm very here for it!!

Mott Haven takeover in DC!! 🇺🇸 So the only reason Tiara & I met was because the show host clowned us for both being from New York 🗽 But this coincidence reinforced a tradition that I'm inviting into my life. Every week for the past 2 months, I've fallen into some sort of "Musical Monday" activity like an open mic or concert (funny enough, almost all of them have been outside of the city). The fact that I can't get away from New York reminds me of how much we contribute to the creative world. Especially during the 50TH anniversary of hip-hop!!! 💿🎵🎧Even when the arts take me away from home, feeding my soul will usually bring me closer to my core -- which is rooted right in our hood. Here's to more musical moments at home and abroad!

The Bartow-Pell Mansion is back in action as our emerald gem in Pelham Bay Park. Throughout the pandemic we found creative ways to pivot from a (sometimes stuffy) museum to an exciting Uptown sanctuary where families can enjoy outdoor excursions, indigenous narratives, theatrical performances, and local goods away from NYC's hustle and bustle. Shout-out to our local reps (especially Marjorie Velázquez & Michael Benedetto) who are keeping us afloat and stronger then ever. I am so happy to have found this place and welcome you to hit me up for a private tour with the other board members. Here's to a quaint fall!

So I didn't know about the progressive channels that are already shaping our elections throughout New York. Had a great time hanging with the Working Families Party and sharing ideas for better voter registration that represents more of us. Definitely consider marking that WFP box, especially if your preferred candidate worked for that endorsement. Thank you to advocates like Maria & Luis Ordoñez who stayed for HOURS to answer my questions. All I need now is some more purple gear ☂️🔮

Took a journey in time to see the first official Garifuna historic tour around the Happyland Memorial where 87 people died in March of 1990. Kudos to José Francisco Avila for his debut as a tour guide and the audience that now knows about our history on a deeper level. Also, shout-out to John who is reconnecting with his roots from across the Hudson River. We're out here making more history everyday!

The best Spades tournament of the season ☀️♠️🃏😎 Shout-out to Mott Haven Houses TA President , , & co. for bringing our neighbors out for a family-friendly round of lunch and competition. While I still need a crash course, programming like this reminds us of the talent and hustle we have among our NYCHA developments. Looking forward to the rest of our summer together!

FBF to Hip-Hop's 50th and the green meds that our pharmacists are cooking up! Grant Master Flash whipped this oak-glazed piece of art in honor of the Very South Bronx where the spirit of freestyle rap thrives. We're always open to stewards and jams in the garden, so hmu if you have ideas for creative seeds to plant! 🌱💿🪴

TBT to the best adventures around Mott Haven & Port Morris I had a tourist, employee and patron in a while. It started from morning treats while brainstorming ideas with my neighbor . Then I spent the day serving the .fec, including a meeting of the minds between my fam. After checking out the for a coffee break, we ended the day at for a Neighbors' Night with among others before heading back to DC. All in a day's work for the South Bronx! We're back baby 🙅🏿‍♂️

Screw a backlog, I always order my Brooklyn Passport with overnight shipping!! Congrats to the Brooklyn Young Democrats for a new season of victories and promises. In a borough where red waves are very tangible, it takes grassroots organizing across borders to keep progressive leaders afloat. I'm here for the long-haul and thank all my homies in Kings County for showing me the game!

Planting seeds and breaking bread from behind the grill! I love how much of a sanctuary this place has become for me. As much of a foodie as I am, I was never really in touch with the process of growing food until the pandemic made many of us reconsider the place of gardens in our communities. We had an amazing morning at La Finca full of food demos, cultural recipes, and neighborly potlucks. Thank you for letting me help with lunch!

TBT to my favorite tradition of this year: THIRSTY THURSDAYS!!Nothing brings people together like food & drink in the presence of more people, which is why New York's nightlife is unmatched. The bangers would throw weekly grounded me, and I found a support system through the South Bronx FEC (now our very own H.Y.P.E. Center 🙌🏾 thanks to a community naming process). Check it anytime and get ready to share in a lot of hyperlocal love! 🍷🙅🏿‍♂️🍻

To my New Yorkers who remember to hit me up when they visit 🙏🏾 Dope time catching and a piece of the conference. It was my first time at the Chinese American Museum () where I learned a lot about the local AAPI presence in the Nation's capital. Counting down the days until I'm not required to be on Capitol Hill, but I have a lot to explore and indulge in before making moves soon 🍾

A great spring fling in the World's Borough to wrap up my world tour and prep me for a summer in DC. The last Taco Tuesday of AANHPI Month at one of my favorite small businesses spoke volumes to everything I love about our city. I appreciate all of y'all New Yorkers who are keeping me grounded and all of my Uptown neighbors who are keeping me afloat. Looking forward to my full-time return (and more practice with celebrating the milestones in life). Cheers to a Homecoming!

There's nothing like a sky-high view to keep you grounded in the city you're trying to build up. Enjoyed catching-up with the homie Sam and some Manhattan Young Dems along the East River. I've learned so much about public service and the democratic process from our neighbors in/near the Upper East Side (i.e. , , ). I'm looking forward to putting our shared energies to good use for our Uptown communities. Here's to the summer! ☀️🌇⛱️

FBF to a fun night of mahjong with the Chop Suey Club. The perfect way to end a "Super Saturday" in Chinatown, we were surrounded by smooth cocktails and local hospitality until the wee hours. I had no idea how addicting the game was and definitely stretched my brain after a tough semester. The pop-up shop doubles as an event space, although the Chop Suey Club itself should be on your radar too! Itching to join some other game nights (i.e. ), so hit a brother up this summer🧋🧧🀄

But you really thought we were done with AANHPI month, didn't ya? TBT to my 2nd viewing of "Blurring The Color Line" with my twin cousin Crystal Kwok, which sheds light on the experiences of Asian-Americans living in the Jim Crow South. The documentary takes on sensitive themes of identity, violence, s*x, and memory in a through family dialogs and reenacted milestones. Just a year after seeing it (just a few blocks away on Hester Street thanks to the ), I have a sharper view on what solidarity means. S/O to for pulling me to the screening and creating a new tradition. Can't wait for the next! 🫖✊🏿🐅🎬🐈‍⬛️🤎🧧

Guess I made it in time for Taco Tuesday! I always enjoy a good dose of nightlife in the neighborhood, and Maisonetta brought the block together this month with a kickass Cinco De Mayo block party and new happy hours in the following weeks. Many of my friends and family who came out hadn't gone bar-hopping in years! Im grateful for this summer already and feel optimistic for what seems to be a post-pandemic season. ¡Que viva el barrio! 🤠🇲🇽🥃

This TBT ahead of graduation, I want to shout-out my peoples across the United States who were pulling for me to successfully wrap up my capstone defense AND this graduate jounrey that wasn't anywhere near my radar exactly one year ago. Chasing another degree when I've barely just started my career is an opportunity that I won't take lightly. I've learned so much about my city from new colleagues and old friends alike. I'm excited to wrap up my summer classes and get back to work for my neighbors. HMU if you'd like to read my research on labor policy and criminal justice!!! ✊🏾⚖️🤎

Taking a 90-sec break from finals to acknowledge AAPI Month and rep my fellow allies who put in the work year-round!! I am thankful for the patience that GU's Chinese Student Alliance showed me while I took my sweet time writing letters to Congress 🤓 We asked for greater funding and engagement on behalf of organizations like (S/O to , one of the first Coro mentors I met out of school). Even in the heart of the nation's capital, I can't run from New York...but I'll accept it in stride with as many of my Asian fam as possible 🐲🍜🧧🙌🏿🇨🇳🥟🎍

I'm not the biggest fan of brain teasers, nor do I have a profound speech here. But health insurance is the bane of my existence this year 🖕🖕🏿🖕🏻Affordable coverage should be provided with flexible options to all students and their families. That being said, health centers are safe havens that often serve us regardless of our insurance status. Large universities need to provide ALL the support they can to these sanctuaries. I am grateful to have a few of them on Georgetown's campus, and I am even happier to put in a piece of this puzzle 🧠🤓🎒

This I'm sober enough to remember that yesterday was Chinese Language Day. I've enjoyed all the events this past year that brought me closer to a beautiful way of communicating (especially in DC). To be clear, I'm way behind on my vocabulary goals and probably won't see a trilingual mixtape for a few years. Major respect for those non-native speakers who have been taking this on! For now, I'll continue learning and play my part as the best ally I can be. Shout-out to all the academics, activists, and acquaintances who welcome me into the journey. RIP to the trade war soon 🇨🇳🙌🏾🎒🥟🧧

Meet me on the rooftop and bring your finest Google Pixel! There's something about a skyline that reminds us of how small our lives are -- and how incredible cities are made. The COVID-19 pandemic also put many of us on to the magic of an open air space. However, while a good view is always cool to experience up top, it's important to remember how zoning laws and labor rights shape the streets below these towers along with the hands that keep them running on every floor. We also need to fill these up with more affordable ownership opportunities before Chicago and New York become empty vacation playgrounds. I'll always rep the home of iconic skylines, but I belong to a taller movement of sustainable development that more cities need to take a page from.

A Chicago-style Taco Tuesday in Kanye's kitchen...hold the Tex Mex 😜 One of the best parts about exploring this country is the collection of small businesses that add character to every city. I love connecting with entrepreneurs who remind me what I love about New York. In Chicago, the sprawled out architecture places you in the center of a concrete forest no matter where you go in the city. The nightlife will give us a run for our money too! The divisions between cultural groups speaks to whispers of segregation in the shadow of a major melting pot. Looking forward to seeing more of the Midwest this spring.

🔮🚨FOOD REVIEW INCOMING🚨😈 For Taco Tuesday, I'm shouting-out a local favorite I grew up by (because New Yorkers will never get rid of me).

La Morada is as satisfying as one can get for a community-oriented restaurant. I will acknowledge my bias since I've been coming here most of my life. I love the warm greetings from everyone in the family (who I consider family of my own). Even with national recognition and critical acclaim, it has not changed too much. Not only do they take great care to address any dietary restrictions, but they'll even remember your favorite orders and voice if you call/visit enough times!

My go-to is the mole poblano or chile relleno, which blends a lot of the best characteristics of Mesoamerican food together. They also have amazing carnita tacos (pictured), although you should keep in mind that they don't serve alcoholic drinks. Don't forget to ask about Marco's artivism and some of the local social causes they are supporting, as they ran a full mutual aid pantry through the COVID-19 pandemic. All in all, this is a mainstay for our Mott Haven community.
