Pepper, Kampot, Cambodia

Foodie Friday!

As well as salt (see my post yesterday), Kampot is famous for its locally grown pepper and it’s often described as the best pepper in the world. I visited a pepper farm to learn how it’s harvested and about the different varieties. Kampot black peppercorns owe their distinctive taste to the rich, fertile soil and tropical climate of the Kampot province in Cambodia.

Salt flats, Kampot, Cambodia

I’m now on the south coast of Cambodia. There are massive salt flats all around Kampot that you can visit and learn about the process that’s involved. Sea water is let into the fields, then blocked, the water is allowed to evaporate, leaving salt crystals. The salt is then collected and piled up in warehouses in the salt fields. It will then be delivered to the salt factory, cleaned and packaged ready for shipment. The landscape all around Kampot, and nearby Kep, is lovely and I enjoyed my time here.

Traditional fishing nets, Kampong Cham, Cambodia

Kampong Cham is home to the Cham ethnic group and to the majority of the country’s Muslim population. It has a different feel to other places in Cambodia as the pace of life is much slower and it feels more authentic. Definitely worth a visit.

Bamboo Bridge, Kampong Cham to Koh Paen, Cambodia

Tuesday Travels!

This week I’m on another weekend away during my time in the capital, this time to Kampong Cham. It’s a lovely, riverside city, situated on the banks of the Mekong, about 3 hours from Phnom Penh. This is the bamboo bridge from Kampong Cham to the small island of Koh Paen. It’s built every year in December from scratch, by hand, for the dry season (in the wet season there's a ferry to the island!) I hired a bike, cycled across the bridge and then watched locals going about their quiet, rural life on Koh Paen.

Phnom Sampeau, near Battambang, Cambodia

About 10km from Battambang is Phnom Sampeau – a 100-metre-high limestone hill in an overwise flat landscape of rice paddy fields. It houses a temple named Wat Sampeou and three natural caves: Pkasla, Lakhaon and Aksopheak. Many people were murdered by the Khmer Rouge between 1975 and 1979 in these caves. Today there is a memorial to all those who lost their life during the regime. It’s a long, steep climb to get to the top however it’s worth it for the temples, the history and the views.

Bamboo Train, Battambang, Cambodia

One of my weekends away while I lived (and volunteered) in Cambodia was to Battambang. It’s the second (or third) largest city in Cambodia (depending on which source you read) and has a laid back, chilled out atmosphere with lovely colonial buildings. It’s also got a bamboo train – basically a bamboo flatbed on wheels, powered by a small lawnmower engine. It’s a brilliant and fun way to see the local countryside as you whizz along through the jungle only a few feet off the ground.

Banteay Srei, Angkor, Cambodia

There are so many different temples to visit in and around Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom and they all offer something unique. Banteay Srei is often known as the ‘lady temple’ or ‘pink temple’ due to the pinkish hue of the stone. It’s a 10th century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. It might be one of the smallest temple sites at Angkor, however the intricate carvings are world famous and it’s often described as the ‘jewel of Khmer art’.

Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom, Cambodia

Tuesday Travels!

This week I’ve left the capital, Phnom Penh, and travelled to Siem Reap and from there to visit the Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom. Constructed during Jayavarman VII’s reign (at the end of the 12th century), it’s unique for being the only Buddhist state temple and the last to be built in the Angkor Empire. The most distinctive feature is all the stones faces – over 200 of them – smiling down on present day visitors. I loved exploring the less popular (and less busy) temples around Angkor Wat.

Frangipani, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Although strictly not the national flower of Cambodia (which is the romduol), Frangipani or Plumeria, holds a special place in Khmer culture. The flower represents a symbol of beauty and grace and it's traditionally adorned in the hair of Apsara dancers. There are lots of beautiful frangipani trees across Phnom Penh and for me the sight and smell brings back lovely memories of my time in the country.

Royal Palace of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The beautiful towering spires of the buildings at the palace are a great example of classic Khmer architecture. The Royal Palace also serves as the official royal residence of the King of Cambodia. The Royal Palace was first constructed in 1866 by King Norodom I, who wanted to create a grand residence for himself and his family. It’s lovely to spend time here exploring all the different palaces, including the famous Silver Pagoda.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is the memorial site of the S-21 interrogation and detention centre of the Khmer Rouge regime in central Phnom Penh. In 1975 Tuol Svay Prey High School was taken over by Pol Pot’s security forces and turned into a prison known as S-21. Locals were rounded up and held here in the detention centre before being sent to the ‘Killing Fields’. Again, this is an important place to visit to understand what happened under the Khmer Rouge regime.
