When I first moved to Portugal, I was nervous about driving here. Portuguese drivers have a bad reputation plus I hadn’t driven for years and never on the right hand side of the road. Even so, I was determined to get a car so that I could take road tripsRead More →

Aveiro is not only a very beauty city with all the canals and a bit different architecture. The whole area around Aveiro is amazing!
Sea, rivers, beaches, villages, nature, birdlife….
Personally, I would rank this area higher then Porto to visit but that’s just me😊.

I stayed in a lovely hotel on a former river boat in Costa Nova called Costa Do Sal. Small room but comfortable and the view during breakfast is great of course! Good choice if you like something different.

Costa Nova village lies on a narrow sandbar peninsula that shelters the Ria de Aveiro, 15 min drive from Aveiro center. This beautiful old fishing village is nowadays a holiday paradise where the former fishermen buildings has become a very special destination. Many of the houses with colorful strips. A heritage from a time when the fishermen easier should find their own house from a distance.

On one side of the village you have the sea and a loooong beach. On the other side the river with small river beaches. It’s more or less flat and I borrowed a bicycle at my hotel and had a lovely morning ride.
Also in Aveiro you can borrow bikes for free.

I can highly recommend you to visit this area but I would avoid June to September when there are plenty of people here.

From now on I’m also offering a 2-3 days guided tour to Aveiro from both the Algarve, Alentejo and Lisbon. Contact me for more information.

I’m out exploring Mafra, Ericeira and Caldas de Reinha. 3 very diverse locations where many people are scouting for relocation. To be able to help them finding the best place matching their personal needs, I am getting to know these areas even better.
Mafra is a small very genuin town for those who wants a calm life close to Lisbon. Close by Ericeira is bigger and with a beautiful coastline.
Caldas de Rainha is a quite big inland city with an industrial feeling. This area has been the center of the tiling manufacturing for decades. My favorite place in Caldas is the magnificent park and old thermal hospital.

I wish you all a healthy, happy and successful 2025!
I celebrated the new year with a nice, warming fire pit🙏. In Alentejo, the nights are getting cold….
This will be the year I’m moving back to the Algarve, where my heart belongs. I’m still going to work with tours in both the Algarve, Alentejo and the surroundings of Lisbon.
For rental search, I’m working in the whole country.

Don’t wait to fulfill your dreams! Life is here and now🙏⭐️💕

This is a very beautiful and interesting place! If you don’t like to drive high up on mountain roads, I’m happy to take you😊. 1 hour south of Lisbon.

The Arrábida Natural Park in Portugal is home to the Convento da Arrábida, a monastery founded in the 16th century by Friar Martinho de Santa Maria. Nestled in the hills, it was originally a place for contemplation and retreat for the Franciscan friars. The monastery complex includes chapels, cells, and a small church, offering a glimpse into the monastic life of the time. The serene and picturesque surroundings of the park made it an ideal location for reflection and spiritual retreat.

The ”towers”, the small buildings are known as hermitages. They were indeed connected to the monastery and were used by the friars for solitary meditation and prayer. Each hermitage provided a quiet, secluded space for the friars to retreat to, allowing them to focus on their spiritual practices.

The three crosses on the hills near the monastery are known as the “Cruzes da Arrábida.” They symbolize the three crosses of Calvary, representing the crucifixion of Jesus and the two thieves. These crosses were placed there by the Franciscan friars as a devotional and meditative site. They serve as a reminder of the passion of Christ and are often visited by pilgrims and visitors to the park.

The exact year the crosses were placed isn’t clearly documented, but they are believed to have been erected in the 16th century by the Franciscan friars of the monastery. The placement of the crosses on the hills was intended to create a spiritual landscape that reflected the Christian tradition of the Stations of the Cross.

The Convento da Arrábida is no longer used as a monastery. Today, it serves as a cultural and historical site. The Fundação Oriente manages the complex and occasionally uses it for cultural events, exhibitions, and retreats. Visitors can explore the monastery’s rich history and enjoy the tranquil surroundings of Arrábida Natural Park.
