Has anyone heard about the Buffalo War in the late 1800's?
If not, it's where the US military was ordered to kill every bison in sight in hopes of defeating their Native American enemies who resisted the takeover of their lands. Without food, the Natives would either starve or have to leave.
The first picture below shows how greedy and cold hearted the officials were.
The Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota was created to protect and preserve the culture, tradition, and living heritage of the North American Indians.
It's a great place to take the whole family. I highly recommend taking the tour to the top of the mountain. There may not be a chance to take it once the arm is complete.
The sculpting of the memorial is funded through ticket sales and donations only.
Korczak Ziolkowski is the original sculptor. He worked on it for 36 years without taking a salary. His family still works on site and carries on his legacy.
We got the privilege of meeting one of his grandsons, who was working on the hand when we took our tour.
When completed, the sculpture will stand 641 feet long and 563 feet tall, making it the world's largest sculpture.
For a size comparison, the head of Crazy Horse alone is 27 feet taller than the six story heads of Mount Rushmore.
Now you know. Go check it out!
