The word Kamloops comes from the Secwepemc word Tk’emlúps, meaning “where the rivers meet” and refers to the convergence of the North and South Thompson rivers which happens right in the middle of the city!
With long sandy beaches, riverside paths, and tons of water activities, the Thompson Rivers are an integral part of our landscape… not to mention they provide the most aesthetic of cityscape views!

Fishing BC Presents: Fall Stillwater Exploration in BC's Land of Hidden Waters
An aerial map of British Columbia’s interior region displays the sheer quantity of lakes available to the angler willing to explore. From Kamloops north to the community of 100 Mile House and beyond, stillwater enthusiasts are found dispersed throughout this region from ice-off all the way until the late fall.
In this short exploration, Jordan Oelrich of Interior Fly Fishing Co. is joined by British Columbia born angler Paula Shearer in pursuit of large fall rainbows in shallow water. Prior to the ice arriving on the lake, these fish will slide onto marl flats to feed on residual food sources such as freshwater shrimp and small leeches.
“This is their last big feed before the ice goes on the lakes, it’s fun to catch them in shallow water like this”.
Paula and Jordan both grew up fly fishing in this region of B.C., and after an overnight trip up the Fishing Highway 24 in the Cariboo region, they return to Kamloops to successfully finish off this fall stillwater adventure and display the ample opportunity that British Columbia’s interior has to offer.
“I was able to go back to my childhood and revisit the reasons why I learned to fish”

Fishing BC Presents: Kamloops Stillwater with April Vokey and Brian Chan
In the realm of stillwater fly fishing, there are few names that hold more weight than that of Brian Chan. Brian was raised on the west coast of British Columbia, and his interest in freshwater fishing was sparked after a trip to Heffley Lake at a young age. Brian had a long career as a provincial fisheries biologist and is responsible for helping develop many of the fisheries that are enjoyed by anglers in the BC interior.
April Vokey has been an iconic figure in the fly fishing industry for well over a decade, and has been a positive mentor for many women looking to begin their journey in fly fishing. Though this is the first day the two of them have spent on the water together, April is adaptive and quickly soaks in Brian’s stillwater expertise.
Through writing books, speaking engagements and presentations, video and personal instruction, Brian has educated countless eager students on the topics of stillwater fly fishing and entomology.
As April joins Brian for a day on the water, she is drawn immediately to not only Brian’s knowledge, but his lightheartedness, modesty and continuous passion for fly fishing.
“To see someone so renowned in their field, who could be taken so seriously as a biologist come to life like this is simply contagious”
