I love that about her.

Flowers are like children. It takes love, a lot of patience, paying attention to little details and providing all the right conditions for growth - and constantly mitigating the negative environmental influences.
It’s easy to grow weeds but beautiful flowers take effort.

Sometimes timing is everything!

When we went to NM to check out the progress on Monday we thought we were going to decide on flooring and pick stains for the latillas and trim… but one of the most important things that happened is we discovered a change we wanted made in the shower framing. Had we been a week later this would have been a lot harder and cost more to change so we might have passed on it.

You can see in the first photo we originally had an arch (which was added to the finished plans as we framed up) going into this beverage center and towel hook area before the shower. But the entrance to the shower was squared off because original designs included a steam shower back there.

We had abandoned the steam shower idea some time ago but didn’t catch the door shape until we went in person. The moment I saw it I knew we needed to match those spaces.

The second photo shows the progress just an hour or so later!

Spent the day over in New Mexico checking in on the project there. I’m in love with all the arches and this plaster wall!

Truth be told, it was originally a plain wall that the bed goes on, then I got the bright idea to make it be a rock wall like we are doing in the bathroom… then we found out the weight of the rock for a wall that is that king and 10’ tall…. and that would mean more support in the foundation. 😢 So we went back to a plain wall but with an upgrade!

Smooth plaster makes my heart melt.

It’s like ice cream melting down the wall… and isn’t that white delicious?!?!

😉For those curious it’s SW Swiss Coffee at 75%…. You can thank me later…. Or better yet thank Brett w Designer's Brew because she saw it on someone else’s walls and suggested it! It’s a white but with a slightly warm undertone.

Are you wondering why the ceilings are dark? Well, the latillas (small long sticks) will be layered along between the beams and the black background helps it all blend in as they aren’t perfectly even.

And now ya know! 😁 Can you name the kind of fireplace we have? And what do you call the arched doorways?

Our Kiva fireplace in the Master bedroom is progressing. Picture one is from my “inspo” pics… it’s clean, sleek lines and artistic without screaming SW extra. The second picture is where we are now.. base coat. Picture 3 is the second old fireplace in that room (a story for another day!) and the pics after that are of the kiva in the dining room of our home.
It’s fun to see it developing.

I just love sunshine in my breakfast nook & a spot of color!
These green bentwood chairs are over 100 years old and probably have 10-12 coats of paint on them. I inherited a set of 6 of them from my MIL who bought them used in the early 1950’s when she got married. Now they brighten up our 1923 Airbnb in Amarillo TX.

What do you think? Do you put family heirlooms in your Airbnb’s?

10 Design tips for working on a budget…

1. Find a statement piece or in this case a set and put your money into the main piece(s). I fell in love with this set of butterscotch leather side chair and recliner, so I made sure they were front and center in my design.
2. By picking smaller pieces to do in leather and the larger sofa in cloth I saved a ton. Also, this sofa was discounted because it had been a floor model, it’s upholstered in a charcoal grey with a bit of a fleck in it so it disappears as a backdrop for my featured pieces - the cowhide ottoman & leather side chairs - and the dark color visually grounds that side of the room.
3. The antique metal tray was found in an old automotive garage and cleaned up, - lesson, be resourceful. Look in old antique stores, thrift and Goodwill. No one will know if that tray came from Pottery barn or the chicken coop once it’s clean.
4. Side tables are background pieces here so I found some from a home goods type store- very basic chunky wood that balance out the couch and hold a lamp, candle, photos and some books.
5. Accessorize with second hand books, an antique bowl, pitcher, or something unique, and vary heights to give dimension.
6. Find an inexpensive - even washable rug online, there are many sites with vintage looking rugs now.
7. Add a lamp with a “warm” toned lightbulb to make the room feel cozy. And a little greenery goes a long way - don’t overdo plants.
8. I’ve layered a set of more expensive leather pillows with an inexpensive set I found at Target.
9. A throw blanket (Target again) on the couch makes your room feel welcoming and comfortable without feeling cluttered. Look for blankets with chunky texture or faux fur in the fall and winter to instantly make the room feel warm & cozy.
10. Add art. You don’t have to spend a fortune on expensive art but a nicely framed print or painting takes a room from average to outstanding instantly.
