Ukraine at War Goodwill Expedition

Last week we had an opportunity to visit Borodyanka town, that was partially destroyed at the start of the war in 2022.

Graffiti of a child throwing a man on the floor is painted on a wall in a residential area of Borodyanka by Banksy.

Earlier, Banksy confirmed the authorship of this and other sis works in Ukraine. Two of them are in Borodyanka.

The infamous former prison island just off the Adriatic coast of Croatia.

Initially set up for political prisoners in the former Yugoslavia, it later also had regular criminal inmates. Prisoners had to perform forced labor in quarries and various workshops and were frequently mistreated in cruel ways. It is hence often referred to as “Tito's Gulag” or “Croatia's Alcatraz”.

The prison was closed in the late 1980s and its cell blocks, workshops and administrative buildings have been abandoned since. The island and its ghost town ruins have in the meantime become a visitor attraction of sorts.

In the summer season there are regular tourist boats going there. So, we recommend to go off season, though, and you may have the entire island and its ghost towns to yourself.

Sanatorium Rkinigzeli (1954)

Rkinigzeli sanatorium is located on S***a Rustaveli Street, near the central entrance of Tskaltubo Park.

In 1954, by the time the building was completed.

Initially, the sanatorium was designed for 250 beds, but over time the number of beds increased and reached 350.

Since the late 1960‚s, the sanatorium has been functioning with the profile of cardiovascular diseases. Medical and diagnostic offices and laboratories were located here. IDPs have been living in the building since the 1990's.

⚡️Monday Fact⚡️

A former Yugoslav Air Force underground airbase on the border of Croatia with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Partly destroyed in 1991/1992 and abandoned ever since, it's now an eerily desolate place, and the tunnel network inside the mountain is a dark (literally can see nothing without flashlight!) maze to explore as an urbex adventure.

Some parts of the complex are positively dangerous to enter, however, it's best to go with an experienced guide 😉

3 days until New 2023! 🥳

Well, we guess it's time to summarize all adventures of the year.

What is the main highlight of 2022? Phew, we have plenty of them!

This year we started with our adventures to Georgia from amazing Tbilisy city!

Then we headed to the Buzludzha monument in Bulgaria and visited the North Korea of Europe - Albania 🇦🇱

2022 also had great news like "touristic reopening of Japan" - tourists are able again to visit the country without a visa, and will no longer need to go through a travel agency.

And soon we had our first Japan tour 🇯🇵!

Our next Urban Exploration tour - Croatia with its abandoned places of the Yugoslavian era!
