Ketchikan, Alaska was our last port before returning to Vancouver. I love the town of Ketchikan! One of the most popular excursions is the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. Creek Street is a boardwalk over a creek with shops alongside and salmon that run the creek during the season. And if you get the chance, go eat at the George Inlet Lodge Crab Feast! It’s SO good!

Skagway has several popular attractions to choose from! You can ride the White Pass Railway to the Yukon, visit the Red Onion Saloon and tour the upstairs brothel museum, or do what we did and rent a car to drive the Klondike Highway to Emerald Lake!

Today’s port was Juneau, and I did the Tracy Arm Fjord excursion. We disembarked while still at sea to a waiting boat that took us into the fjord and to see South Sawyer Glacier. Love to see a glacier calving!

It’s a lovely rainy sea day on the Koningsdam today. I love sea days! I had brunch at the dining room and spent the morning exploring the ship. I’m attending afternoon tea and then specialty dining on formal night at the Pinnacle Grill. Some pictures of my exploration!

This is our Holland America Koningsdam Verandah stateroom. It’s located all the way forward on deck 4, so the balcony is not see through. The twin beds can be moved together to make a larger bed. I love the size of the balcony and the shower!

Always allow at least one extra day BEFORE you sail for travel. You never know what might happen to delay you and you don’t want to miss your ship! Just last week there was a worldwide shutdown due to a technology issue that caused many delays and missed connections.

July 12 - Ketchikan

I love the city of Ketchikan! There is so much to do from walking Creek Street, to rainforest walks and crab feasts.

We decided to do a new tour offered by Princess, an Alaska Bear Encounter. In case you are considering this excursion, I’ll share our experience. First, it’s an expensive tour and there is NO guarantee you will see bears. So you are taking a risk and you need to be prepared for that.

We took a bus to a port about 20 minutes away. Then, we boarded a boat to ride about an hour to Neet’s Bay, where they have a salmon hatchery. Once we arrived, we had about a 15 minute walk though a forest trail before arriving at the observation area. There is seating in this area that opens up to the back of the bay.

We were lucky! A bear approached the area just as we sat down. We watched him for about 30-40 minutes before we had to leave to head back.

Bathrooms are available at the port before boarding the boat and at Neet’s Bay. A guide met us at the dock in the bay and stayed with us. Snacks back on board the boat were granola bars and bottled water. Overall, it was a good day, but I can see it would be very disappointing if there were no bears to show. The last pictures were taken with my camera and show a much closer view of the bear.

July 11 Day at Sea

Food and fun! We had a lazy day at sea resting and eating! This ice cream sundae is one of Princess’s new Premium Desserts that are part of the Princess Plus Package. You can actually have two of these a day free with that package! 😝

July 10 Icy Strait Point

When you dock at Icy Strait Point, you can take a transporter or hike the trail to the old Cannery where there are restaurants and shops. We went to the Cookhouse for Halibut and Chips. So good! We took the Gondola up to the top of the mountain where there’s a great view!
