On Tuesday, April 2nd, the New River Gorge region experienced an unusual weather event: a tornado! The damage not only affected the surrounding area but also impacted Babcock State Park, the host of the NRG’s longest-tenured trail running race, the Grist Mill Grinder. Working with Babcock State Park and the race director of the Grist Mill Grinder, Ascend WV organized volunteers to clear trails around the State Park. During the volunteer event, 10 volunteers removed four down trees, cleaned and flagged 8 miles of trail, and created 2 rerouted trail sections to ensure that the race on April 20th can take place with no trail impedances.

Thank you to Beckley Rotary for allowing us to borrow hand tools, Domino’s for supplying pizza for our volunteers, and all the volunteers who came out to help make this volunteer event successful.

Saturday night, Ascend headed to the Greenbrier Valley Theater for 'Voices of Appalachia.' Watching the 5 short plays by Appalachian playwrights shared the history of the area and connected our other cohorts to a piece of Greenbrier Valley.

Cross-cohort event pt. 3!
🥏🌳 Some joined disc golf in the Greenbrier State Forest while others enjoyed an oyster roast back at the Briergarten. 🍽️ The highlight of the day? One member impressively shucked and devoured 60 oysters in just 60 minutes!
