Seated at the midpoint of Belize’s wondrous coastline, Hopkins is one of the very best places from which to experience most of the country’s attractions in a short period of time—nothing is more than a three-hour drive away. Hopkins has been voted “The Friendliest Village in Belize” (which is saying something, given how kind Belizeans are generally). It has a higher concentration of Garifuna people, making it a great place to learn about Belize’s rich Garifuna culture, especially through cooking, drumming and dance lessons.

Belize has some of the best zip lining in the world. The lush forest, billowing with all different textures and colors of leaves, makes the view spectacular and calming all at once. The air is fresh and sweet in your lungs. And because the zip courses typically criss cross a river gorge, the can get pretty high (while staying safe). You’ll probably laugh, it’s so fun.

Lose yourself in the blues of sea and sky from the bow of a 40-foot sailboat. Many companies host adventures on fishing or motor boats, but there’s some extra special about the Sirena Azul. Departing from San Pedro’s Blue Tang Inn, you’ll spend four glorious hours snorkeling and swimming off the coast of Ambergris. With stops at the majestic Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, you’ll float along with sea turtles, stingrays, nurse sharkes, and dozens of other fish and bright living coral. Your captain and diving guide are certified for boat and water safety, and are experts in Belizean wildlife. Plus they serve tasty ceviche and rum punch onboard. (Book the 1pm cast off and you might catch the sunset!) A minimum of six people us required to book your tour, so bring friends or request to join another group.

While tubing attracts more crowds, there’s nothing like navigating under stalactites and around spindly trees. Not only is the view better (sitting up straight, looking left and right), you get to choose your speed and how close you come to the awesome vegetation and live mineral formations all around you. Don’t get us wrong, lazily drifting down Monkey River is a super dreamy, fun way to spend an afternoon, but it doesn’t compare to the challenge and excitement of steering yourself through narrow mangroves or over shallow waterfalls. Most guided tours start early in the morning and may be combined with other activities like zip lining, horseback riding, rock climbing or hiking archeological sites.

Breathe deep as you’re lowered three hundred feet into the Actun Loch Tunich sinkhole, known as the Mother of All Caves. The Black Hole Drop is one of the most exciting, best kept secrets of all of Belize’s big adventures. Start the day off with a ninety-minute group hike up the steep mountainside, your view growing more and more awesome with each step. From the top of the drop, the Hopkins rainforest rolls out before you in a sea of green on green. Your heart will race, at first, as you are slowly, steadily lowered more than thirty stories down into a true geological abyss. Once inside, you feel the rare experience of being alone in the universe - a sensation like no other. And because of the entry from above (rather than ground), ATL offers better light and cooler rock formations than you’ll see in other caves, like ATM.
