Walking through the luscious jungles in the northeast of the Mexican state of Chiapas (by Tabasco, though bordered by Guatemala), through and under towering cedars, rich mahoganies, delicious fruit bearing sapodilla treesโฆ with the chatter (or rather, gargle) of the chachalaca or the rough cries of saraguatos (black howler monkey) beckoning you forward (or scaring you sh*tless, depending on your familiarity with their calls)โฆ your eyes dance across elegant waterfalls of various sizes decorating the scene with all shade of blues like a true paradise... with your senses overtaken by the natural beauty of it all, you may not notice you are wandering through a late pre-classic Maya city, or two.
Indeed, many of these cities, collapsed since the 9th century AD, have since almost totally become โrecoveredโ by their mother, nature: la Madre Tierra (shout out, pachamama, you always take back whatโs yours!) and so blend in to the vegetation and hills that surround them, ironically protecting them for centuries from possible looting (by ewโmans)
L A K A M H Aโ (place of much/big water), aka Palenque, is one such a city, less than 10% of which has been excavated in the last century, its ruins now an archeoligical site and UNESCO world heritage wonder for tourists and anthropologist alike to gape at (or scratch themselves at, because sometimes a bug may welcome you to the food chain here)
We look at these massive yet somehow still detailed and delicate ruins and many of us may exclaim โhiiiiijole, what advanced societies, technologies, arts, politics, rituals etc. created this great ancient civilization?โ then one might stroke ones chin and ponder โif they were so impressive and brilliant...HOW did it get it to this... how does such a city becomeโฆruins?โ
A question for the ages, that one! One that apparently current word limits says I'll have to continue answering in another post which is ironic because this post is a continuation of the post I wrote about a year ago (started with Chichen Itzaโฆ you can search for it if youโre curious!)
the algorithm stikes again to protect you from my pen (phone) strokes... but l'll be back in a day or two or who knowsโฆ a yearโฆ geopolitics and sh*tty ewmans have me down and distracted (we havenโt learned our lesson at all. Learn history, people. Do not repeat what ruined us - jeje gettit? Itโs not funny but if I donโt crack a joke Iโll cry!)
