NOT our cheese - but very exciting to see the same techniques we use in action!

Aleksandra, Christy and Sam visited Cheddar Gorge in Somerset, and brought back this small wheel of cave-aged cheddar, using a traditional wrapping technique of lard and cloth to seal the cheese and create a rind as it ages. BEAUTIFUL mold on the outside, and a creamy, flavourful cheddar inside with cheese crystals running through it.

We do the same with our own cheddar, but have struggled to maintain a stable environment for consistent ageing (ours always ends up on the dry side). This year, we'll be trying out some different methods for ageing, as well as giving our dairy an upgrade to manage bigger quantities of milk 🐄🥛

New reading material for the lodge!
We have several bookshelves in the lodge, for readers of all ages and interests.
Our latest additions are...
📚The Yorkshire Shepherdess by Amanda Owen
📚 The Darker Side of Wight by island author, Peter J Murray
As well as our bookshelves, the coffee table is stocked with lots of island reading materials - a perfect pairing with a biscuit and a cuppa on the cosy sofa!

Seed sorting time!
To replace the washing up sponges in the lodge, we will be growing our very own luffa this year, ready for use in 2026 🤩

These cucumber-like plants can be eaten while ripe, or can be left on the plant to fully dry out - and become the luffa/loofah that you can see sold in zero waste shops!

In addition, we'll be growing a full bed of 'everlasting flowers' for colourful dried flower bouquets! 💐

Uther has arrived, bringing with him the distinct pong of billy goat at the farm! 😭🤣

Goats are sometimes unfairly seen as smelly and dirty animals, but in our experience, it is JUST the billys who smell (to attract the ladies). Oh my goodness. Think....off goat milk in a warm room x 10. Some people don't mind it, but personally....not a fan!

But we forgive his stink as he is SUCH a handsome and good-natured lad - our girls are warming to him fast and *fingers crossed* we'll have little kids bouncing about this spring!!

Our day started with feeding the animals and milking the cow...and then straight inside for hot chocolates and yule log!

Solstice blessings to you!

We celebrated at sunrise with Ali's kardemummabullar (cardamom buns) and a fire. We wrote out things that we wanted to leave in the past year on pieces of paper, before burning them! And then we wrote out things we wanted to bring forth in this new year on scraps of cloth, and tied them to a tree! Funnily enough, 'creativity' was the key word for all our wishes!

To end our morning celebration, we drank milk 'straight from the teat' mixed with maple syrup! When we first did our research into a house cow, we found a smallholder who raved about this sweet little tradition she does with her cow (even keeping the bottle of maple syrup next to her milking stall!). We can attest that fresh, warm milk with maple syrup is a DELIGHTFUL thing and we too, shall be keeping a bottle of maple syrup next to Nettie's milking stand! 🥛
