Over 250 feet tall and more than 30 feet in diameter, giant sequoias can overwhelm the senses. Looking up at these majestic titans, it’s amazing to think that many of these trees were growing tall before the Roman Empire was formed. It's a place and a feeling you won't forget. Entre 1600 y 1650, Roma se convirtió en centro de atracción para muchos artistas, atraídos por la renovación de las artes protagonizada por dos grandes figuras cuya influencia se extendió por toda Europa: Caravaggio (1571-1610) y Bernini (1598-1680). Por primera vez, el Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna ha reunido una selección de su obra, así como de otros representantes del barroco romano temprano que muestra cómo fueron entendidos por sus contemporáneos. Caravaggio y Bernini crearon en sus respectivas obras, pintura el primero y escultura el segundo, imágenes fieles a la vida. Representaban cuerpos en movimiento para transmitir lo que los movía por dentro, los sentimientos. Una conexión entre realidad y emoción completamente nueva que se convirtió en característica de la era barroca.
Junto a obras del propio museo, la exposición reúne unos setenta préstamos procedentes de todo el mundo, entre los que se encuentra este ‘David con la cabeza de Goliat y dos soldados’ (h.1620-1622) de nuestra colección. Su autor, Valentin de Boulougne, fue una artista francés que, desde su llegada a Italia, quedó fuertemente impresionado por el trabajo de Caravaggio, por su novedosa forma de interpretar la realidad, convirtiéndose en uno de los más fieles seguidores del maestro. On this day in 1558 Elizabeth I acceded to the throne upon the death of her half-sister Queen Mary I of England.
Her long reign, beginning in 1558, saw the secure establishment of the Church of England. It was characterised by relative peace and prosperity, a great increase in foreign trade and exploration, and a flourishing literary culture.
This portrait, associated with the artist Nicholas Hilliard, is known as the 'Phoenix' portrait after the prominent phoenix jewel that Elizabeth wears at her chest, which was an emblem for rebirth and chastity. Elizabeth can also be seen wearing a heavy jewelled collar with a red and white Tudor rose in the centre.

The model, named Suzon, an actual barmaid from the Folies-Bergère, came to the artist's studio to pose amid bottles and glasses. Many questions have arisen from the painting and how it makes little visual sense: How can the back of the barmaid we see at the centre of the canvas sket so far to the right?
