Behind the Lens: Kerewan Samba Sira

We came across Kerewan Samba Sira village while researching a new location for a water well project in remote villages through our charity organization, Volunteer Trails Since there is already a community well supplying water to the whole village, we received a plea to help light up the entire village instead.

If you find it in your heart to contribute to this meaningful project, we can light up the village and the faces of its residents together. Thank you!
And if you are looking for responsible and meaningful travel, or you want to reconnect with yourself, share your knowledge, and experience the pure essence of life, then we invite you to Kerewan Samba Sira.

THE CALABASH: A CONTAINER, BOWL AND AN INSTRUMENT
The calabash or a gourd, locally known as lekket, is a tropical plant that usually grows in tropical and subtropical areas of the world.
There are two different kinds. One is a tree, and its fruits can be used as vegetables when harvested early. The other one is growing in the soil, and it is harvested when mature, then dried and used for different purposes. People don't consume it, yet they grow it in various shapes. The round ones, formed like a watermelon or a pumpkin, make utensils, water and food containers, bowls, and instruments. The small ones are used as wall decoration nowadays, but in the past, they mainly served as spoons to eat and drink with!

TRIP OF THE MONTH: SALOUM DELTA, SENEGAL
The significant part of the Saloum Delta, which covers 180,000 hectares, is a part of UNESCO World Heritage. It is a valuable bird breeding ground with extensive biodiversity, hosts a marine protected area, and a burial ground with many sacred artefacts.
The Saloum river embraces more than 200 islands, and the isles are covered in mangrove forests and swamps and dissected by saline channels and lagoons. The animal world of the delta is notable as it gives shelter to many mammals, four species of turtles and numerous species of birds, amongst which are Great White Pelicans and even greater flamingos.

SABA SENEGALENSIS
The Saba Senegalensis also known as Kaba in (Mandinka), Madd in (Wollof) usually grow on the river banks and in the woodlands of the Senegambia region. The vine-up trees usually grow like small erected shrubs, when ripe the color is usually yellow-orange.

It is a very useful crop plant to the locals in The Gambia and Senegal as it is used extensively in various food and drink preparations.

The fruit can be opened and eaten with either spice, sugar, or without anything, it can be pressed or blended in a bowl/container with water added to make a nice natural juice.

To know more about these beautiful natural fruits and get a chance to taste them on your trips to the Senegambia region, join us on the exploration of The Ninki Nanka Trail - Casamance.

GET TO KNOW THE JOLA LIFESTYLE OF THE CASAMANCE

Probably most different from the rest of the ethnic groups living in the Senegambia region is the Jola (or Diola). Mostly living in small dispersed villages in The Gambia's region Foni, in part of Guniea Bissau and southern part of Senegal - Casamance, they are a population of about 700,000 to 900,000 according to different sources.

To describe them with a few particulars, they are great agrarians, deeply connected to and respect nature, have strong animistic traditions and form egalitarian society formations based on close neighbourhood and family relations.

Casamance is a sub-Saharan paradise of waterways, fishing villages, palm forests, and rivers. It is geographically and culturally different from the northern part of Senegal. This region lies in the sub-tropics, with the increased rainfall showering the landscape in lush grasslands and dense forests.

Casamance's waterways, known as bolongs (creeks), nourish the distinct flora and fauna.

The architecture in Casamance is known for its impluvium-style huts, whose doughnut-shaped roofs allow the seasonal rains to fill an internal water reservoir and cool the home at the same time.

To discover and explore this intriguing and incredible paradise on earth, join us on the Ninki Nanka tour to Casamance with Ninki Ninka Encounters.

Did you know?

Sibiloumbaye Diedhiou, the current king of Oussouye, was previously a mechanic and hotel security guard before being chosen by the elders in 2001 as a king. He is the most powerful and also the most visited person in Casamance.

The kingdom of Oussouye, according to history, existed many centuries ago, and the selection to their throne doesn't adhere to the customary line of succession; instead, they choose their kings by merit.

It is worth knowing that the job of being a king in Oussouye is for life. When one is chosen, one cannot refuse or resign.

However, when the elders cannot identify a worthy king among the three main families, they stay without a king until a worthy person is identified. It is recorded that Oussouye was without a king from 1984 to the year 2000.

Every year, at the end of the harvesting period, the people organize a festival called ‘’Fete Du Roi’’. During this festival, the people will come together to celebrate the king, show solidarity, do warrior dances, contest in wrestling matches, do spiritual rituals and traditional culture.

To learn more about this fascinating kingdom and its history, come with us on the Ninki Nanka trail Casamance.
