When there was no 4x4
Ralph A. Bagnold crossed Sinai several times in the 1920s. After being the first to reach the southern tip of Sinai by car he was shure that cars could make it over the dunes of the Western Desert of Egypt.
On his test drives through Sinai he had learned how to strip down a car to the basics, how to cross sandy areas by deflating the tires and how to recapture the water overflow of the radiator.
The use of cars, aeroplanes and later the use of satellites changed the exploration of the Sahara. Cars travel longer distances than camels. They can follow tracks that were last travelled some thousand years ago, when the Sahara was still a savannah.
Desert exploration has always been driven by intelligence gathering, economic and political interests. Bagnold's crossing of the Western desert of Egypt had the same purpose. His maps of the Western desert provided a firm foundation for the Long Range Desert Group in their fight against the German troops in World War II.
