Protecting and enhancing the local natural beauty is a priority for us.

This winter we've been filling in some gaps in the hedgerow along our lane. We consulted with local hedging experts and suppliers to plant a mix of native species - planting in total 250 young whips. We've added wood chip held in place by some simple box work - all to help the whips establish and protect them from mowers + strimmers. It can be very windy here, so we expect some casualties.

Work expertly coordinated and deliver by local Tree Surgeon Simon Hatch and team from Arbor Vitae https://www.arborvitae-treesurgery.co.uk/

A fresh lick of paint for the Tunnel to the Caponier apartments - just in time for our guests in the run up to Easter.

The Caponier originally had 24 men sleeping there - in hammocks strung across the rooms. Those hooks and rings have been preserved as part of the original features

We recently found this great photo of Freshwater Bay in 1891. What can you see?

Bathing machines on the beach close to The Albion Hotel , and Freshwater (Fort) Redoubt more hidden pre 1920s 1st floor extensions.

6th August 1891 Afton Down Estate auction. We found these particulars recently and have donated these and others to the Freshwater and Totland Archive.

I went out last night to capture a night time moon photo, I was experimenting with my lens the 200-600. The moon setting behind Freshwater, i had help from a double decker bus who had its high beam lights on and highlighted the cliffs nicely. Next time i want to use less than 200mm and not so late at night and not so cold :)

Not the first driver to under estimated the size of their vehicle, this time top corners hit arch 😬. No damage done. Everyone ok.

In this weeks edition of Isle of Wight Forts, Island Echo examines arguably the most spectacular and iconic of our forts: Fort Redoubt overlooking Freshwater Bay. To the best of our knowledge, Fort Redoubt has never fired a gun in anger. It was yet another of Palmerston's follies - intended to prote...

No, we're not on fire. The lovely 1916 Dennis N-Type fire engine, known as 'Jezebel', popped over to see us having been visiting the Iow Steam Railway Steam Show this bank holiday Weekend.

We retired with the students to the Beer bus in Freshwater Bay, before they retired back to Havenstreet

Tunnels! - Guest at Fort Redoubt often ask about Tunnels - and yes, we have our fair share!

Guests drive over our bridge and through the tunnel to access the courtyard. and those staying in the Caponier walk along 20 meters of tunnel to access the apartments. We've also recently installed new lighting to the magazine rooms (where high explosives would have been stored). 1 of these rooms is used as the bicycle store for those looking to explore the island by bike (highly recommended).

The Victorians knew that candles and high explosives don't mix well, so built in a number of "light passages" so candles could be held behind glass, but also serviced and replaced without the flame being in the same room as the explosives - Smart!

We also have 2 tunnels to the beach (Freshwater Bay & Watcombe Bay) - but neither is publicly accessible or in a fit state to use. Perhaps you've seen our 'door way in the cliff' and the metal stairs

Question: What are those hooks on the walls for? - and tiny extra windows?

The Caponier was a defensive building, and ours is unusual in also serving as additional accommodation for 24 soldiers from 1860s to 1900s

The Hooks are for hammocks! there are hooks on one side and rings on the other - we deliberately kept and preserved these when we restored the Caponier. No hammocks provided these days - just comfy beds.

The little windows are gun slits (now double glazed). They look along the length of the moat (in both directions) so that any attackers (likely French) who ended up in the moat could be shot at from the safety of the building.

I defy you to find any form of aggravation within the borders of the British island where I found a surprising feeling of 'zen'
