🇨🇦 Canada📍Moraine Lake, AB
Photo by | The most photographed location of Canada is at Moraine Lake in the Rocky Mountains.

The area around the lake has several walking/hiking trails that are, from time to time, restricted. The trail most commonly taken by tourists is The Rockpile Trail, which is along the actual moraine. The trail is approximately 300 m (980 ft) long, with an elevation change of 24 m (79 ft). Nearby, another view of the mountains behind the lake in Valley of the Ten Peaks is known as the "Twenty Dollar View,” as Moraine Lake was featured on the reverse side of the 1969 and 1979 issues of the Canadian twenty dollar bill.

The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until middle to late June. When it is full, it reflects a distinctive shade of azure blue. The unique colour is due to the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited in the lake on a continual basis by surrounding glaciers.

The road to Moraine Lake is only open during the summer months (June-Sep). Since 2023, Parks Canada has closed it for personal vehicles year-round with only its shuttles, public transit and commercial operators allowed to access the road. Visitors can also bike the road.

YOU DON’T JUST LOSE SOMEONE ONCE
You lose them over and over,
sometimes in the same day.
When the loss, momentarily forgotten,
creeps up,
and attacks you from behind.
Fresh waves of grief as the realisation hits home,
they are gone.
Again.
You don’t just lose someone once,
you lose them every time you open your eyes to a new dawn,
and as you awaken,
so does your memory,
so does the jolting bolt of lightning that rips into your heart,
they are gone.
Again.
Losing someone is a journey,
not a one-off.
There is no end to the loss,
there is only a learned skill on how to stay afloat,
when it washes over.
Be kind to those who are sailing this stormy sea,
they have a journey ahead of them,
and a daily shock to the system each time they realise,
they are gone,
Again.
You don’t just lose someone once,
you lose them every day,
for a lifetime.

Remembering Townes Van Zandt (March 7, 1944 – January 1, 1997)
Townes was a holy mess, his life a mix of the sublime and the horrific. By the time he died of a heart attack at 52 on New Year’s Day, 1997, the Fort Worth native had written a large batch of enduring songs and become the subject of colorful tales—many of them even true.
Van Zandt believed his craft demanded high sacrifice. “You have to blow off your family,” he said. “You have to blow off comfort. You have to blow off money. You have to blow off your ego. You have to blow off everything except your guitar.” Many music critics agree that at least two dozen of his songs––including “If I Needed You,” “Marie,” “Snowin’ on Raton,” “Rex’s Blues,” “For the Sake of the Song,” and “A Song For”–– justified his claim. Others cite high-water marks, such as “Pancho and Lefty,” “Flyin’ Shoes,” “To Live’s To Fly,” “Tecumseh Valley,” and “Lungs,” as unparalleled lyrical masterworks. Remarkably, he composed his most timeless lyrics before age 30.

Ray Wylie Hubbard: “Townes would write these incredible songs, but he understood the craft of it,” Hubbard says. “He had the rare combination of inspiration plus craft.”
