Dogs' Cottage Life

It was a pretty good start to our September cottage visit. Although it is still quite warm, the wildlife is definitely active!

We went for an after-dinner paddle and watched quietly as Mama and baby loon swam right between us. I spooked a huge bass with my paddleboard which jumped and scared me with its loud splash.

A muskrat munched happily on some weeds while we floated within about 10 feet of him. We even caught a glimpse of his ratty tail sticking up out of the water.

Walking back up towards the cottage at dusk, we spotted a big buck that we weren't sure wasn't going to charge us as he continued to walk towards us. He eventually disappeared into the bush.

When we got to the deck we waited a few minutes to see if he would come back out. He didn't but we did see a brown-grey doe with two red fawns.

It was almost dark when we took the dogs for their evening walk and we heard our very first ever whip-poor-will.

Further down the road, two blue herons squawked as they flew right over us. Toads were everywhere on the road and our dog, Roxie, even got ahold of one briefly -- yuck! It hopped away and she hacked and sputtered to try to get rid of the awful taste.

Finally we spotted this leopard frog on our driveway.

Hopefully Derek will get some good photo ops with his camera this week!

Another great fall weekend at the cottage. We had the White-tailed doe and her two fawns visit every night. Also, we had a nice flock of Evening Grosbeaks spend the weekend on our property. This was our first time ever seeing this species!😀

It's been a great week at the cottage. The loons have a pair of loonlets that appear to be doing well so far. The cool overnight temperatures have made for some interesting photos of them in the thick fog. We have also caught a couple of brief glimpses of a white-tailed deer fawn and mom crossing our driveway in the evening.

We went to the cottage for a couple of days and what a difference a month makes. We were here in April and the lake was still covered in ice, and other than a few Blue Jays, there were no other birds around. There are birds everywhere now and our property is full of warblers and Orioles. I have only been able to get a few species as most of the small warblers are staying in the thick brush, making them almost impossible to photograph. Also, I was finally able to get a shot of a snowshoe hare this evening as it dined on dandelions. Unfortunately, most of the white fur is gone as it has transitioned into it's summer coat.

Our little buddy, Spike, has been hanging around for a couple of weeks now. He seems to like the noisy Blue Jays, birdseed and the green grass. I also think he might like Momma deer who frequently visits with her two fawns.🙂

The local winter birds were loving the new feeders we put out this weekend. We were also excited to see an American Tree Sparrow which is a new visitor to our property. It was another great weekend with our feathered friends.🙂

A few shots from the end of November. We had a beautiful clear night for a shot of the moon and a calm morning for some reflection shots off the dock. Also, we had a visit from the female Pileated Woodpecker and our little buddy Red. We are also seeing deer feeding later at night in the yard, which is always a welcome sight.🙂
