CDC announces travel restrictions for countries hit by Ebola

CDC officials announced limited travel restrictions to people coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea.
CDC officials announced limited travel restrictions to people coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea.
(CNN)Travel precautions will be imposed for individuals coming to the US from Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo -- two countries fighting recent outbreaks of the Ebola virus, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday.

Next week, the US government will start directing travelers from Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo to six US airports, according to the CDC. Airlines will collect information from all passengers boarding flights to the US who were in either country within the previous 21 days, and share the data with the CDC and local health departments for monitoring purposes.

The measures come as the US and other nations grapple with the Covid-19 pandemic, with increasing concern that variants could send rates spiking once again. It also follows two previous outbreaks of Ebola in Africa that began in 2014 and 2018, resulting in the deaths of thousands.
During the 2014 outbreak, similar travel precautions were applied. Passengers arriving at designated airports to the US from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone -- the hardest-hit nations during the outbreak -- had their temperature taken and were asked questions about whether they had been exposed to anyone with Ebola.
The CDC noted that this year's outbreaks are in remote areas and the risk to the US is extremely low. The agency said the travel restrictions are being implemented out of an abundance of caution.
As of Thursday, the World Health Organization said there were nine Ebola cases and five deaths reported in Guinea, and eight cases and four deaths reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Guinea declared an Ebola outbreak in one of its regions earlier this month, days after the Democratic Republic of Congo declared its 12th outbreak in its history.
The Red Cross said in a statement that a network of more than 700 trained volunteers has been "activated as part of a first wave of response and the government has called on people to respect hygiene and prevention measures and to report signs of the disease to health authorities." The World Health Organization has helped control the recent outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo with vaccines and is helping to procure doses for Guinea.

Entertainment Returns to the Las Vegas Strip at MGM Resorts

MGM Resorts shared details about the first live shows to return to the Las Vegas Strip after months where they were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In accordance with current government guidelines, the company will return seven shows to stages at MGM Grand, Luxor and Excalibur beginning Nov. 6.

“After eight months, it’s time to bring entertainment back to the Entertainment Capital of the World,” said George Kliavkoff, MGM Resorts’ president of entertainment and sports. “While there is still a long road in our city’s recovery, the reintroduction of these shows is an important first step. Nov. 6 is going to feel very special as we welcome back team members and guests and bring the curtains up for that first time.”

This initial phase of entertainment allows for a maximum audience of 250 guests, physically distanced at six feet between parties and a minimum of 25 feet from on-stage performers. In some cases the show’s venue may reflect a change from previous performances in order to meet all guidelines. Beginning Nov. 6, guests will be able to enjoy:

MGM Grand: David Copperfield will return to the David Copperfield Theater at MGM Grand Emmy Award-winning illusionist Copperfield wows audiences with his stage production “Live the Impossible.” Recipient of the Living Legend honor by the Library of Congress, Copperfield holds 11 Guinness World Records, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has sold more tickets than any solo performer in history.

Jabbawockeez will bring its signature moves and “Timeless” show to the MGM Grand Garden Arena Jabbawockeez has developed a one-of-a-kind style that has positioned the group as the most influential dance crew in the world. Known for creativity, choreography, athleticism and intricate synchronization, the dance crew brings a different technique and perspective to form the original style that makes the Jabbawockeez so distinct.

Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club will take to the stage in the resort’s Studio A & B Ballroom. Emmy Award-winning comedian and actor Brad Garrett brings his top-quality comedy to MGM Grand nightly. The club provides Garrett, as well as legendary comedians and the next generation of comics, a place to call home in Las Vegas. Guests must be 21 years of age or older.

Luxor: With three decades of comedic performance, Carrot Top is one of the most popular, recognizable and successful comedians in the nation. Using a one-of-a-kind style, Carrot Top is ever evolving and has become a Las Vegas staple, reflecting current headlines and consistently poking fun at pop culture, politics and music. Guests must be 16 years of age or older. Anyone under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult 21 years of age or older.

Named an all-time Best of Vegas (2020) for Best Female R***e, Fantasy has remained one of The Strip’s top productions since its premiere 20 years ago. Dynamic lead singer Lorena Peril delivers powerhouse vocals, taking center-stage alongside a talented cast of beautiful dancers. Popular among singles and couples alike, the always-evolving, sexy production showcases 15 high-energy numbers set to today’s top music. International World Champion Magician Murray Sawchuck will be appearing as a special guest star. Guests must be 18 years of age or older.

Excalibur: The Australian Bee Gees will perform in the resort’s Thunderland Showroom. “A Tribute to the Bee Gees” is a multi-media concert event with a contemporary perspective featuring state-of-the-art sound, lighting and giant screens streaming video clips, live camera images and graphics. It is the definitive live celebration of five decades of memorable music written by the Brothers Gibb.

Thunder From Down Under will perform in the resort’s Thunderland Showroom

Australia’s Thunder From Down Under is the number one male r***e show in the world, not only performing in Las Vegas nightly, but also touring in Germany, Ireland, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, Guam, Thailand, and Macau, among others. The longest-running and highest-grossing male r***e in the history of Las Vegas provides a sensual adventure for guests using state-of-the-art lighting, amazing costumes and perfected choreography. Guests must be 18 years of age or older. Anyone under 20 years of age must be accompanied by an adult 21 years of age or older.

MGM Resorts spent months developing and implementing its comprehensive Seven Point Safety Plan and its Meeting and Conventions “Convene with Confidence” program, which outline the company’s approach to protecting the health and safety of guests and employees. A “Convene with Confidence” program specifically for entertainment and sporting events also has been created and will be implemented Nov. 6 when shows reopen. The multi-layered plans look at everything from sanitation stations, masking and physical distancing to digital solutions that minimize touch points as well as enhanced cleaning protocol. Details around both programs can be found at MGM Resorts Entertainment Convene with Confidence.

“Our hope is that as we successfully navigate the reintroduction of these initial shows,” said Kliavkoff. “We can continue working with our state and local officials to create an environment in which we can return even more of the city’s entertainment landscape. Entertainment and events are in our DNA and we are anxious to get back to our roots.”
