The Metate and Mano are tools crafted and used by the Maya to grind products such as corn and cacao beans.

Meet our little friend Penny. She is using these tools to grind corn to make her fresh handmade corn tortillas.

The corn is usually mixed with lime (calcium hydroxide) to help break it down to achieve the consistency needed to make fresh corn tortillas.

Xunantunich Archeological Site which is also known as “Maiden of the Rock” is located only 30 minutes south-west of San Ignacio Town, in the beautiful village of San Jose Succotz. To gain access to this magnificent site one must cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry.

A tour of this site last about half a day and can be combined with either a tour of the Cahal Pech Ruin or Barton Creek Cave.

Take a day to revisit history as we meddle into the life of the Mayans. As we dive into just a part of their rituals and beliefs. On the west region of Belize in the enriched rain forest lies a little cave by the name of Barton Creek. Barton Creek was one of the sacrificial site for the Mayans. These sacrifices according history used to be tokens for their Rain God. Decades' of remnancses from these presumable sacrifices can be seen in this cave as we comb through the crystal clear water for a knowledgeable canoe tour.

The National Animal of Belize: The locals of Belize refer to him as a "mountain cow" due to it's habitual status. The proper name for him is a Tapir. A tapir is a large herbivorous mammal that is similar in shape to a pig, with a short prehensile nose trunk. Tapirs inhabit jungle and forest regions. They are active mostly at night as they forage along river banks and forest clearings. Among the various types of tapir in Central America you could visit the Belize Zoo to find the well domesticated and Nationalized Bairds Tapir along with a wide variety of wildlife.

Market Day in San Ignacio
