The house dates back to the 18th Century. The house is in the centre of the village of Tanlay with its 16th century Chateau, baker, (small) supermarket, 2 r
estaurants/bars, excellent golf course, tennis courts, canal and river all a short stroll away. We bought the house in 2018 and have renovated the interior and garden whilst still maintaining the traditional and aged look and feel of the house. The house had not been lived in for over 20 years, apart from a few days a year when the owners would visit from Paris. Many of the pieces of furniture and pictures were in the house when we bought it. We have up-cycled many of them and they add a real history to this beautiful old building. We own and run a hotel barge, in the summer season, on the canal which goes through Tanlay so we are always available should the need arise. The house has 3 bedrooms; with 1 king, 1 double, 1 large single beds and a double sofabed. Large, well equipped kitchen and separate dining room. Large lounge with sofas, chairs and a wood burning stove. Courtyard to rear of the house with BBQ, chairs and tables and bicycles. Through the front door is the Ground Floor comprising of the hall, living room, dining room, bathroom and kitchen. The kitchen has a number of up-cycled units and almost 7m length of worktops. The kitchen is fully equipped, including dishwasher and microwave. The dining room has an ancient wooden farmhouse dining table which can comfortably seat 8. To the rear of the house is a courtyard with tables and chairs and a BBQ. The living room has comfortable seating a wood burning stove and TV. From the living room is a stairwell leading to the first floor. Off the stairwell is the ground floor bathroom. The first floor has 3 walkthrough bedrooms (access to two smaller bedrooms is from the main bedroom at the top of the stairs). The first is very large and has a standard double bed (140cm x 190cm). Walk through to the second bedroom which large has a king bed (160cm x 200cm). Walk through to the third bedroom which has a small double/large single bed (120cm x 190cm). Tanlay is a small, pretty and friendly village located deep in the Burgundian countryside but still only 2 hours by car from Paris. (31 mins from Junction 20 of the A6 and 50 mins from Junction 21 of the A5). Very close to the wine producing regions of Champagne (30 minute drive), Chablis (20 minute drive), Auxerre (30 minute drive) and Tonnerre (10 minute drive). Located in the Northern Burgundy in the Yonne and bordering Aube, Cote d’Or, Cher and Nievre departments Tanlay is well situated to explore the the wine regions of Champagne, Chablis, Tonnerre, Auxerre as well as the well known names of Southern Burgundy. The amazing Chateau de Tanlay is quite literally just around the corner from the house - a 1 minute walk. The village has an artisanal baker which is 3 minutes walk from the house a (small) supermarket has an excellent butcher and is open 7 days a week. The Pizza restaurant and bar in the port of the canal is 5 minutes walk and there is a Bistro/bar by the Chateau which is a 1 minute walk. There are 3 swimming areas on the river within easy reach. One is a 10 minute walk from the house - the others are a 10 minute drive. There is also a municipal swimming pool in Tonnerre (10 minute drive). There is a 9 hole, well regarded, golf course in on the edge of the village - a 10 minute stroll away from the house.
2 well maintained and easily bookable tennis courts are available by the port, a 3 minute walk from the house. There are many excellent and world renowned wine producers within a short drive from the house. Many offer free tastings and tours. We are happy to offer advice on where to visit. The nearest train (TER) station is Tonnerre (10 minute drive from the house) - which is 1 hour and 55 minutes from Paris Bercy. The nearest TGV station is Montbard (35 minute drive from the house) - which is an hour from Paris Gare de Lyon. There are plenty of local cycle routes - particularly along the canal. There are many Chateaux within easy reach of the house; Ancy le Franc (15 minute drive), Maulnes (15 minute drive), Vaux (40 minute drive), the UNESCO World Heritage site of Vezelay (1 hour drive). The beautiful village of Noyers sur Serein (one of France's prettiest) is 40 minutes away and well worth a visit. The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Abbaye de Fontenay is 45 minutes drive away. For a fantastic day out (not just for children!) we would thoroughly recommend a trip to the Castle of Guédelon which is currently being built using 13th century techniques and tools.
