This is another really cool one from the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce photos. A 1950s Soap Box Derby; the Bunyan Days Derby! An absolute staple of sitcoms for decades, its cool to see a local one.

Looks like it was taking place on North Simon St at the intersection with East Pine (based on the church on the left looking like the modern day "Our Savior" and the sign saying East Pine.

I really hope someone is alive who might remember this race!

Happy New Year!!!

When Cadillac had its "First Night" celebration they had a pin every year. Here are pictures of the pins that I have. 2003 - 2009 are at the Wexford County Historical Society , 2000 and 2002 are from ebay. Does anyone out there have a 2001? Where there any more after the 10th anniversary 2009 pin?

It can't truly be 25 years ago can it?! As some people held their breath wondering if Y2K was going to be the disaster some predicted, others decided to go to a new celebration, First Night which became a yearly celebration for awhile! Check out all the events we had going on!

I remember the sumo boxing suits they had and knocking my best friend down and out of the ring!

Although Cadillac did not get the jet intercepter base, we were the proud home of a naval reserve. The idea of Cadillac having a naval reserve building dated all the way back to 1912, but the idea was more seriously considered after World War 2. Lt. Parr, who worked out of the City Hall building, was such a great recruiter he was able convince the powers that be that landlocked Cadillac deserved a center. Today it is the Arts Building and Senior Center, but I'll always remember it most for hosting Cadillac's satellite NMC Campus.

Some more aerial shots from the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce collection from when Cadillac was attempting to get funding for a jet intercepter base in the early 1950s. Spoiler alert..... we didn't get it, but neither did Traverse City who was our primary challenger. It was thought the base, which was potentially going to go in near Interlochen Arts Camp would severely damage the camps already sterling reputation as the music center of Michigan.

Credit to whoever labeled these back in the day! Thank you!

From back in the days when you could always count on Cadillac having snow during the winter! The Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce pictures take us to Caberfae Peaks! One of the greatest ski resorts in the midwest.

I hate to admit it, but my history of Caberfae is pretty spotty. It's a mid west treasure, but I am not a ski person! Would love to get a tour of it myself some day.

The area was improved by the CCC in the 1930s. The name was chosen from a ranch and is attributed as Scottish meaning "Stag's Head."

Our next post will be more ski pictures!

Merry Christmas to everyone and sorry about the gap in posting. Here is some more from the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce collection featuring the Airport. Did you know that at one point the airport area was known as Saunders field for William L. Saunders' donation of the land for use as an airport? It's sad that kind of fell out of favor at some point.

I have no clue who the people are in the photos. If anyone knows, please let me know!

We have some tennis pictures from the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce scans. Does anyone recognize these people?
