And everyone starts washing it as if there is no tomorrow.

Did you know?

On December 31, Croatians celebrate Silvestrovo (Saint Sylvester’s Day). Sveti Silvestar (Saint Sylvester) was Roman Pope Sylvester I who lived in the 4th century. The legend says that he cured the emperor Constantine of leprosy.

After this, the church declared him the patron saint of lepers. During his period, Christianity became a free religion, and Sylvester helped to spread it around.

Silvestrovo is the day when Croatians prepare a lot of food, clean, and dress up to welcome the new year of prosperity.

New Year is a symbol of a fresh start. There is a New Year’s saying:
"Kako dočekate ponoć, takva će vam biti cijela godina." This means that your whole next year is going to be exactly like your night on New Year’s Eve.

If you’re with many friends on the eve of the new year, your next year will include a lot of time with friends. If you’re having a bunch of great food and drink, you’ll enjoy a lot of great food and drink in the new year.

Maritime Museum Dubrovnik Anchors

The Maritime Museum was founded in 1949 at the initiative of the Yugoslav (today the Croatian) Academy of Sciences and Arts; since 1987 it was been a part of the Dubrovnik Museums. The main part of the holdings arose from numerous donations of Dubrovnik citizens to the Patriotic Museum in the first half of the 20th century and objects from the exhibition Dubrovnik Seafaring through the Ages, which was put on in 1941.

Since 1952, the museum has been located on the first and second floors of Fort St John (sv. Ivan). In the past the fort guarded the entrance into the city port, and was one of the most important points of the city's defences. The construction works started in 1346, today's appearance being completed at the end of the 16th century. In the 19th century it was rebuilt into two floors, and at the places where there had been artillery embrasures, windows were installed.

The museum systematically collects, studies, exhibits and publishes the museum material from the maritime past of the Dubrovnik region, all the way since Antiquity. Today it has holdings of over five thousand objects classified into fifteen collections.

Did you know?

One thing that immediately catches the eye when you visit the City walls are the distinctive red roof tiles of the Old Town. Terra cotta color of the rooftops of this medieval city that was almost completely destroyed in the Great Earthquake in 1667. Known as “Velika trešnja”, this devastating earthquake left more than 5000 people killed.
The city and its rooftops were damaged again in 1990s during a siege of Dubrovnik executed by the Yugoslav People’s Army during the Croatian War of Independence that provoked strong international condemnation. After the armed conflict, city of Dubrovnik has been the focus of a major restoration programme coordinated by UNESCO that recognized its remarkably well-preserved cultural heritage and added it to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Series in 1979.
It is said that more than 70% of terra cotta roof tiles were destroyed during this war and during the restoration process finding a similar color of the famed red rooftops was a difficult task. However, there is a place in the world where the similar ones are being made – Toulouse, France. The reconstruction process backed by UNESCO started in 1993 with a reconstruction of the rooftops of the bombarded and burned city. It was impossible for one factory to produce this amount of tiles so the companies in Toulouse joined their forces to provide the rooftop tiles, a project that has cost more than $ 9 million. The reconstruction program to restore the famous Pearl of Adriatic took several years where more than 200 000 tiles were made and shipped from Toulouse to Dubrovnik.

Did you know?

Motifs such as the 'rozeta' or rose window (borrowed from the Italian), a four-leaf clover-like shaped window carved out of stone. You can see them all over the city, one of its symbols of heritage and architectural beauty.

Rozetas are Romanesque in style and most often used as a decorative window in some of the city's most important buildings, such as churches, fortresses and palaces.

The rozeta is a symbol of light and dates back to the 11th century, when the rozeta motif spread through Turkey and all over the Mediterranean, as far away as Beirut. It also took up residence in Dubrovnik, where elegant rozeta carvings into stone produced stylish windows in and around the old town.

And in this Instagram age, the rozeta is even more in demand, but this time for a different purpose – photography. As thousands of social media addicts visit the city each day looking for that perfect selfie or unique shot, there has been a rise in the profile of the rozeta, which appears in many shots with a historic building through the window in the background.

And the rozeta has even become a souvenir, a portable memory of your visit to the Pearl of the Adriatic.  A new line of jewellery, featuring the rozeta motif was recently introduced by a local designer, creating a long-lasting memory of Dubrovnik and its beauty.
