Mini travel guide: Zagreb
Lotrščak Tower - fortified tower, one of the oldest buildings in Zagreb, you can climb it to see the whole Zagreb.
Funicular in Zagreb - it is the shortest funicular in the world and also the first means of transport in Zagreb.
Strossmayer promenade - also known as a Zagreb Stross is a long promenade - street on the side of the Old Town of Zagreb, it runs along the remains of Zagreb’s medieval defensive walls. It has beautiful views of the newer parts of the city and it also leads to the tunnel Gric which connects streets on both sides of Old Town Hill.
St. Mark’s Church - Zagreb icon, it is with Lotrscak Tower one of the oldest buildings in Zagreb. It has a unique colorful roof, which depicts the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right.
Kapelica Kamenita Vrata - wonderful gate to the Old Town with an altar and a small chapel inside.
Gornji Grad, Gradec (Upper/Old Town) streets - the Old Town is separated from the rest of the Zagreb by gates, Lotrscak Tower and a wall next to the tower, the streets here are preserved in medieval style and are worth wandering around.
Tunel Gric - built during the WWII primary to shelter civilians from bombings, it is the only one of a network of Zagreb tunnels under the Old Town that is open to public. Tunnel entrances are marked by the Zagreb coat of arms and are not that easy to find. Today it serves for pedestrians, as a gallery and to cool down a bit in the hot Croatian summer.
Cathedral of Zagreb - one of the city’s landmark, second tallest building in Croatia.
other places:
Dolac market - main market square, opened daily until 3pm;
Ul. Ivana Tkalčića - lively street with restaurants and pubs, very nice summer vibe;

Bologna is home to the oldest university of the Western World founded in 1088. The students of the university have two superstitions. They avoid climbing to the top of the higher tower and they never walk across the middle of the Piazza Maggiore. It is believed that if they do either of these, they will not graduate.
There is a superstition that students who walk through the middle of the Piazza Maggiore and up the tower won’t graduate.
Portici - arcades, no other city has so many arcades. There are more than 38km of arcades just in the city center. The arcades are numbered and lead to a church on the hill. It is said that the entrance to the church has an arcade with the number 666, but there are no numbers at last 10-15 arcades, but by counting it manually it fits. It is said that the architect purposefully did this after some fight with the Vatican.
Little Venice in Bologna is a hidden gem of the city. Many people don’t know that Bologna is full of small canals that were created to allow merchants to easily transport their goods across the city. Many were blocked and don’t exist now, but there are a few you will be able to see.

1. Be flexible with dates - traveling on weekdays is cheaper than around the weekend or holidays.
2. Be flexible with places - be open to where to go. When I started traveling on my own I visited every place where the flight tickets were cheap at the time and I still do (but now it is a bit harder as I visited more places).
3. Travel during the off-season - anytime other than high season is great - less tourists, smaller crowds etc.
4. Prepare your own meals or try street food - I really enjoy visiting local markets, buying cheeses, meats, vegetables, fruits and baked goods but sometimes you don’t have the time to prepare the food, so a great alternative is to try the street food. Nowadays, street food can be an amazing fresh and healthy alternative to markets or restaurants.
5. Search for free city tours - available in most of the cities. It is free but it is expected to leave some tip to the guide.
6. Find what you can see for free - some cities have free museums, some have them free one day a month or during some special occasion etc. Churches are often also free or just find beautiful viewpoints where you can sit and admire the views.
