This is it! The last hurrah…the final round-up…the end of the line. Our trip to Japan has come to an end. The interesting thing about flying home is we go back in time. Our flight departs at 8:45pm. We arrive in Honolulu at 10:30am that same day. We then arrive in Los Angeles at 9:45pm that same day. So we basically get to live Wednesday, 8/21, twice. Crazy.

Ok so what did we do as our final activity? We divided into two groups. Marlene and Jack went to a temple to learn about meditation and Zen from a real monk. It started with a guide showing them around the temple and providing a history lesson. Then they learned how to meditate in the traditional Japanese style. They were fortunate to have a private tour and some valuable and amazing one-on-one time with the monk. He was a very nice and funny guy. After their temple tour and monk interaction they enjoyed a specially made vegan meal with their guide. It was an amazing experience for them and a great way to end the trip.

Charlie and I hit the streets with no plan other than to find some fun. We ended up at the mini pig cafe for some more quality time with piglets. Then we found an owl forest where you can pet and interact with owls. I’ve always thought owls were a cool birds but getting to see them up close and pet them was amazing. I have a new found love for them. Our lunch consisted of one last serving of Waygu beef. Mmm mmm its so good. Outback Steakhouse doesn’t even compare. Then Charlie tried his luck at the claw machine parlor and won a bug, soybean keychain and a stuffed monkey that had eluded him for several days. We celebrated by having a crepe and shaved ice and I got Marlene some popcorn from a movie theater to enjoy on the plane (she loves her movie theater popcorn).

We reconvened at our hotel and the our driver arrived to take us to Kansai International Airport. Its a 90-minute trip to meet up with our flight on Hawaiian Airlines. Although its been a great trip I am so exhausted and ready to go home. The bags under my eyes feel like oversized luggage.

This has been a great trip to Japan. We crossed a lot of things off our wish list but we barely scratched the surface seeing this country. The one thing I didn’t get to do was zip-line into Godzilla’s mouth. Maybe next time. We each have a take-away that we want to do when we get home:

Jack-build a garden path
Charlie-open a mini pig cafe
Me-build a koa pond
Marlene-Get a bidet toilet

The people of Japan are amazing. Everyone from the hotel staff, store clerks, guides, Uber drivers and everyone else were always kind, polite, accommodating and friendly. I honestly cannot think of one interaction that was negative with any person we came in contact with. The best part is they weren’t just being kind for a tip, because there is no tipping. It was honest to goodness friendly service. I look forward to coming back someday and see other cities and learning more about the Japanese culture.

It’s hard to believe today was already the last full day of our Japan adventure. Let’s not dwell on the end yet as we had a full day today that we need to discuss.

But before we talk about today I have to confess to almost starting an international conflict yesterday on our Kyoto tour. At one point we stopped at some local vendor stores. One place we went was a Saki shop owned by a very nice man who took was happy to explain about his saki, he was so proud of it. He gave us some small cups to sample the sake. One he gave me was wayyyy to strong and was like rubbing alcohol. He could tell it was off my saki chart so recommended a sweeter one. Well, I didn’t want to drink the strong one so I poured it out. HOLY COW! In that single act I almost destroyed all US and Japan relations. The man was not so disappointed about me pouring it out. Boy did feel bad. In the end we mended our issue and laughed about it. Of course it helped that I bought a bottle of saki from him. Lessons learned.

Now let’s talk about today.

After breakfast at our hotel we headed to an old Kyoto neighborhood for a traditional tea ceremony complete with kimonos. The fitting and dressing process for the kimono was just as much fun as there is a serious process to fit it correctly. We walked around and took some pictures on the village street before the tea ceremony. Im not sure who thought wooden flip flops are a good shoe because I almost broke my ankle twice and its impossible to walk up a sloped street.

The tea ceremony was very nice. Our host has been doing it for 40 years. She first provided us the history and health benefits of green tea, then she did the whole 10-minute preperation ceremony, then we made our own green tea. Its was a beautiful ceremony and even though green tea is an acquired taste I am going to try and have some daily.

After the tea ceremony we walked around the village and had lunch in a small two table restaurant. We have been in Japan for 9 days and I finally got the courage to try some ramin. I actually enjoyed it. Then we came upon a ninja shop with a ninja throwing star and blow dart activity. Of course we had to try that. After being given a quick lesson on how to do each one, there was a prize if your could hit the throwing star target 2 of 6 time or 4 of 6 times with the blow darts. We failed in the throwing stars but I got 5 of 6 blow dart targets. My prize was a ninja throwing star (and i treated myself to ice cream). I labeled myself the family Sh**un due to my success.

Due to my new found ninja skills and feeling a bit connected to the ninja community it was time to go to the Samurai and Ninja Museum. This was a 40-minute guided tour through the history of the Samurai. Fun fact: Did you know that all Samurai were right handed so they wore their sword on their left side? In order to have the sword on the opposite side of people walking towards them, people walked on the left side. That tradition of passing is still in practice today and is why in Japan today cars drive on the left side of the road. Disturbing fact: If a ninja dishonored himself took gain his self respect he stabbed himself in the stomach and the had his head cut off. Yikes. At the end of the tour you could dress up as a samurai warrior for photos.

Moving on from the museum of my warrior colleagues, we explored the Nishiki Market. This is a long walking street filled with all kinds of food. Things I would never even consider eating, like a soft shelled turtle or sea urchin or even a sparrow. Yes a sparrow, the cute little birdy you see all the time. No we did not eat dinner on this street.

It was then time for a cute and cuddly break so we hit one more animal cafe. This time it was the puppy cafe. Just a bunch of cute dogs running around. So basically I paid money to hang out at the dog shelter. But they were very cute. One of the dachshunds love Jack and Charlie and slept on their lap.

The night was starting to wrap up as we had to get back to the hotel to start packing. However on the walk back we stumbled upon one of those places where the fish clean your feet. We debating trying it and then just said, why not? It was such a bizarre feeling when you first put your feet in and dozens of little fish start nibbling your feet. It tickled. Just another fun thing to do on vacation.

Well thats about it for today. But wait! The trips not over yet. Our flight doesnt leave until 8:45pm tomorrow so we have a few things planned. Don’t go away. See you tomorrow.

Hello from Kyoto! Today was a fun filled day taking in a lot of sights. First we started with breakfast at our hotel. As you can see by the pictures there was not much in the way of scrambled eggs, bacon, toast or pancakes. Marlene and Jack ate well but Charlie and I settled for some croissants, corn flakes and fruit. The coffee was good though.

Todays itinerary included a guided walking tour of the Arashiyama region of Kyoto. Its more of an old world area and much more peaceful than where we’ve been. Our tour group was small, it was only us and a family of three. First we walked through a local neighborhood on our way to the bamboo forest. I picked up an ice cream cone along the way, why? Well if you’ve been following along you know its hot. Fortunately we had a cloud cover so no death rays from the sun, but it was still hot and even more humid.

The bamboo forest was super cool. Did you know the bamboo grows an average of four to eight inches per day with the record being 47” in one day? The City has to constantly cut down bamboo to maintain the forest. The stalks have a huge circumference as you can see in the photo with my hand as a comparison.

We then visited a nearby shrine and learned the proper technique to enter and to say a prayer. Pass under the entry on the left or right side, the center is for the Gods to walk though. Two bows, two claps, prayer, and one bow. Simple and respectful.

Next we walked the gardens of a famous Japanese silent film actor. He spent 30 years building the garden and trails and one year after finishing he passed away. In his will he asked for the gardens to be opened to the public. It was a very beautiful walk along the pathways.

Next stop was the Temple of the Dragon. This location was the Japanese emperor’s villa in the early 1300’s. When he tried to take the power away from the Sh**un general, the general exiled the emperor and moved in with his family. Later, the Sh**un general had a dream that the emperor’s spirit took the form of a dragon and burned down the villa. The Sh**un general then turned the villa into a temple in order to appease the former emporers spirit. Nowadays we would call that having a guilty conscious.

The final stop was to visit the famous Macaque Monkeys at Monkey Park. We had to climb up a mountain trail for 20 minutes up 540’ of elevation. Wow did we break a sweat from the humidity. Our shirts were soaking wet. Once we arrived the view of Kyoto was amazing. The monkeys live in the wild in a group of about 150. They come down the mountain to the visitor area to roam freely and be fed by guests. The only place you can feed them is from inside the building through the grating. A bag of fruit or nuts costs 100 Yen (about .70 cents). As they roam the grounds you enjoy their antics but you can’t touch them. It was a really fun experience.

For dinner we sort of divided up again. Jack really wanted to try a revolving sushi bar but it had a 60 minute wait. So Charlie and I went for some fried chicken at Nene Chicken while they waited for a table at sushi. Not a wise choice by Charlie and I. When we finished we joined them at the sushi bar and then found out they serve chicken there. Even though I don’t like sushi it was a fun place. Each table is a semi-private. They have the typical plates of food going by but if you order from the touchpad there is an express lane conveyor belt that delivers directly to your table. It total there were 20 plates, two beers, three deserts and two teas for 6200 Yen ($42). Great price and lots of fun.

We are super tired so that’s a wrap for today. Tomorrow is our last full day, we are going to a traditional tea ceremony complete with kimonos. Not sure what else but maybe the Sh**un and Ninja Museum. See you tomorrow.

Today we said our our goodbyes to Tokyo and traveled by the Shinkansen, aka the Bullet Train, to Kyoto. However, the train didnt leave until 4pm so we had some time to kill and did a few things.

We started off with breakfast at our hotel. All the restaurants here have these cool trays so your utensils dont rest on the table. Great idea. After breakfast we visited the Harajuku neighborhood to hang out with sea otters. Yup, otters. Just like the mini pig cafe we went to, they have them for kittens, puppies, hedgehogs, owls and even otters. Evidently otters secrete some sort of oil that smells so you have to don beautiful green slippers, a wrap-around apron, windbreaker, and wear a facemask because it has a fishy smell. After a while you got used to the smell. The otters were super cute, soft and super playful. Some of them would just fall asleep on your lap.

Then we walked around the shops and street vendors in the area. It’s amazing how many people and chaotic the shopping areas can be. We tried some of the local street food. Marlene had curly chips on a stick. Charlie had a shaved ice, I had a strawberry Ice cream crêpe, and Charlie and Marlene shared a rainbow grilled cheese sandwich. Evidently it tastes as gross as it looks.

We headed back to our hotel to pick up our luggage and stopped at Sh**un Burger. Wow, that was a super good hamburger. They should franchise into the USA. So good.

It was then time to do something I never thought I would ever do…ride the Bullet Train. The kid in me was so giddy but it was suppressed from the heat and humidity. Have I mentioned how hot it is here? Check out the picture of us standing next to the train, Jack and Charlie look like they are about to pass out while Marlene does the typical girl pose 😂.

The Bullet Train was one of my highlights so far. I have always loved trains and this one is legendary. We were in car 9 on the right side so we could see Mount Fuji. Sadly the weather did not cooperate and it was covered by clouds. But traveling at 200mph on a train through the Japan countryside was very cool. I threw in a picture of the bathroom just to satisfy your curiosity.

We arrived in Kyoto on time after the 2 hour 15 minute ride. Then it was dinner time. It was bound to happen eventually but our dining pallets finally collided. We could not find a place that we all four agreed upon for dinner. I was so hungry looking for a place that my stomach started eating itself. So, we divided and conquered. Marlene and Jack ate at a restaurant that had a traditional tempura 7 course meal. Charlie and I found a place with Kobe Beef. In the end we all had a great dinner.

We are down to our final three days. We have several things planned for the next three days so thanks for staying with us. Oyasumi (good night).

Have I mentioned yet how hot and humid it is here? If not, let me tell you…its so hot and humid.

We must have been super tired because we didnt even get up and moving today until 9am.

Japan has some fun entertainment places. Jack and Charlie went out last night to explore while I was doing laundry and Marlene was sleeping. While exploring they found places that have nothing but hundreds of claw machines to win prizes. Its like playing a slot machine but with claw machines. They tried about 40 times but never won. So of course today we had to go try it. Ta dum, I won on my third try and Marlene won on her 4th try. Take that younger generation.

Japan also has places with dozens of vending machines with little toys. They are everywhere. One place we went to had hundreds of them and they are constantly crowded.

While walking the street we spotted Godzilla peering over a building. Super cool! I have yet to find a store with any Godzilla souvenirs.

For lunch we ate at a little place that serves ramin. I got the spicy pork with rice and a large ooh long iced tea. Its not my passion tea like at home but its starting to grow on me. I actually like the jasmine iced tea.

We walked the streets of Shinjuku and did some shopping. Then we went to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. It had a Central Park vibe. A big beautiful park and gardens in the middle of the city. Did I mention how humid it is? Well, the gardens only made it worse.

After visiting the gardens we decided to try our luck navigating the JR rail system. Fortunately we were able to figure it out and jumped on the train to visit the Shibuya Crossing, which is one of the largest pedestrian crossings in the world. It was nuts. Pictures do not do it justice. So many people crossing amidst the chaos of lights, sounds and traffic. But everyone was in unison and crossed only when the light was green.

For dinner we ate a restaurant where you cook your own meat. Hmmm thats a great business model. No need to hire cooks. But it was fun, we had Wagyu Beef and boy was it tasty.

I am super tired (again). Tomorrow we get to ride the bullet train to Kyoto. I am looking forward to that. Thanks for joining us and for all the likes and comments. Stay tuned for more.

Well today was quite different. It was our last day at the Tokyo Disneyland Resort. We knew there was rain in the forecast, no problem. However at 9:00am during breakfast we received an alert from Disney indicating the parks would be closing at 3:00pm due to a typhoon. Whoa! That was not on our list of things to do. So what did we do? Donned our rain ponchos and confronted the storm head on.

Once we got into the park we only had about 4 hours so we did our favorite rides, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Indiana Jones and The Tower of Terror. Super fun. We took a late lunch break for some fried chicken and were visited by some characters.

Closing time came at 3:00 and we tried to do some shopping in the Emporio store. Wow that was a bad idea. Packed solid with people. Needless to say we didnt buy anything. It was then time to say goodbye to the Tokyo Disneyland Resort and head back into Tokyo.

A few noticeable takeaways from Tokyo Disneyland Resort:
🇯🇵The staff and guests were amazing. They were very polite, friendly and respectful.
🇯🇵The Disney staff reminded me of old school Disneyland magic. Clean cut, super helpful, super polite, happy, smiled and waving to everyone. It was such the contrast to US Disney parks where the standards have gotten way too lax and its lost some of the magic.
🇯🇵The parks are immaculate. No trash, no graffiti carved in railings or posts, everthing works and clean bathrooms.
🇯🇵Japanese guests dont push or shove. They are patient and accommodating.
🇯🇵Cell phones were rarely seen being used. Even in the queue lines. People actually talked to each other.
🇯🇵It was such a pleasant experience. Every Disney emplyee should visit Tokyo Disneyland to learn their customer service and appearance standards.

We checked in to our hotel in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo. The view from our room on the 30th floor is amazing. Marlene and I visited the bar for happy hour after loading the washing machine. I got a beer with amaretto and orange juice. It was like a beer mimosa. Then I made the mistake of trying the mint beer. 🤮 Imagine drinking carbonated mouthwash. Marlene had three cosmo’s.

We had a nice dinner at the hotel restaurant before heading back to relax in the room. Of course that didnt last long. The laundry didn’t fully dry so while Marlene sleeps I am enjoying the view, scrolling social media, watching Gladiator and writing this post while waiting for an empty dryer to finish the laundry.

Tomorrow we will see what aventures we can find in this area. See you tomorrow.

Me: Wow! I am completely exhausted and sore. The heat and humidity in Japan is debilitating. In my humble opinion it’s worse than a Florida summer.

Everyone: Quit whining. You’re in Japan and we are at work!

Me: Point taken.

Day 3 is in the books. Today we went to Tokyo DisneySeas. Holy cow, the theming is absolutely amazing at that place. Pictures do not do it justice.

Before we get to the theme park let’s start by talking about the fact we are sleeping in a double bed. Well, last night while sleeping I attempted to roll over and rolled right out of bed onto the hard floor. From that point, I knew it was going to be a great day.

We started with breakfast at the Sherwood Forest buffet at our hotel. They had many Western food options as well as traditional Japanese cuisine. Check out the picture of scrambled eggs 🤢.

After breakfast a little chaos ensued. We had to take the monorail from our hotel to DisneySeas. However, unlike Disney World, the monorail here is a paid form of transportation. They dont take credit cards to buy tickets and we didn’t have any Yen. There is no ATM machine at our hotel to get cash. We had to walk 10 minutes to the next monorail station which has an ATM. Whoops it only takes credit cards issued in Japan. We walked to a convenience store and found another ATM. Whoops it only takes credit cards (no ATM) and we dont know our PIN #. Good grief. Marlene called Discover and set up a PIN. 60 minutes later we finally got on the monorail. Lessons learned.

Okay lets talk about DisneySeas. As I mentioned, the place is perfectly themed. It is broken up into different themed seaside districts such as Mediterranean, turn of the century New York Harbor, Cape Cod, Forbidden Island from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and several others, all centered by a giant volcano. They have a brand new area called Fantasy Springs.

My favorite attraction was Journey to the Center of the Earth followed by Indiana Jones, Tower of Terror and Frozen.

Tomorrow we are going back to DisneySeas then we leave the Disneyland Resort tomorrow afternoon and check-in to a hotel in Tokyo to explore the real Japan again. Ugh, there is a 70% chance of rain all day.

That’s about it for now. Thanks for tagging along.

When your ready to book your trip to Japan or anywhere, send me an email.

We made it to Tokyo Disneyland…yahoo!

The Tokyo Disneyland hotel is absolutely beautiful. It has a charming Victorian decor. The staff are all super nice and welcoming. We arrived at 9:45am and even though our room wasnt ready they still gave us the room key and said we could access the room at 3:00. So we checked our luggage at the bell desk and were told it would automatically be delivered when the room is ready so no need to call for it.

We then ventured into Disneyland. It was so exciting being at a Disneyland park that we had never been to.

I starting out by enhancing US and Japan relations by making friends with the entry staff. Then the first stop of course was the obligatory castle picture. From there we went on our first ride. The classic…Pirates of the Caribbean. Interestingly was the fact the whole ride was in English except for the talking skull before the water fall.

Then we went to lunch at the Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall. If course I had to get the biggest dessert possible, the unbirthday cake. Mmm mmm.

I found one of my new favorite rides, Enchanted Tales of Beauty and the Beast. It was such a fun ride and they have one of the best special effects when the beast transforms into the prince. So amazing!

We rode other rides and then it was time to take a break and see our room. Its super nice. We got the room with the alcove bed to be able to have some extra space. The amenities are nice including pajamas to wear.

We ate dinner at one of the three restaurants at the hotel. Then we went back in the park to see if after dark, do a few rides and shop on Main Street. Marlene was able to add some popcorn buckets to her collection.

It was a great first visit to Tokyo Disneyland. Tomorrow we get to experience Tokyo Disney Seas.

Thanks for tagging along today and see you tomorow.

Day 2 in Japan.

Our first full day in Tokyo. We slept for 10 hours after being up for 22. Our hotel had a small breakfast buffet with some traditional Japanese cuisine. Can you guess which plate is mine and which is Marlenes? I put some forks in my backpack for future use.

We started off the day by taking an Uber to the MiPig Cafe to spend some time with little piglets. Our Uber driver was very dapper and even wore white gloves. In fact, all our Uber drivers were in suits and very professional.

The MiPig Cafe was a cute experience. You sit on the floor and 20 piglets are roaming freely in the room. They loved to snuggle and sleep on your lap. Don’t tell Willow or she will get jealous.

Strolling along the street we came upon a nice local temple with a cemetary next to it. The tree in the photos was saved and moved to this location after an air raid during WW2.

For lunch we went to a nice place that cooked Kobe Beef at your table. Mmmm mmm it was so good. The beat steak we have ever had.

We strolled around the City and came upon a new Nissan concept car. It seemed like their answer to the Tesla Cybertruck. Then low and behold we stumbled upon a McDonald’s. We had to stop in to see how different their menu is. Some pretty odd items. The hamburgers are just as crappy as ours.

We jumped in another Uber to visit the Emporer’s Palace. Unfortunately it was closed. I tried to explain to the guards that the Emporer was expecting me, but they didn’t buy it.

Our final activity and highlight of the day was the Tokyo Street Kart. We drove around the streets of tokyo in go-karts going past landmarks and sites. You even got to dress up as your favorite character like Super Mario Kart. I was a narwhal, Marlenes was Hello Kitty, Jack was a platypus and Charlie a Pokemon character. Its was super fun but we got super hot so half way through the costumes came off.

That ended around 9pm. We were all tired and hungry. We ended up at a small restaurant that had slim pickings to choose from. The chicken I ordered came out under cooked. Still being hungry I opted for a microwave dinner from 7-Eleven. Boy was it yummy 🤢.

Well thats a wrap for today. Its midnight. Tomorrow we start our Tokyo Disneyland portion for three days.

See you tomorrow.

Konichiwa. We made it to Tokyo, Japan.

Needless to say as I post this it is 8:00pm in Tokyo, thats 4:00am at home, so I am a bit tired. Please excuse any typos or nonsense.

Jack and Charlie loved thier first class seats. I am glad we were able to give them that experience. Once we landed we got a blast of Japan heat. Wow wow wow. Its hot and humid. If you have ever been to Florida in summer this has a very similar feel. Kind of like the surface of the sun.

The drive to our hotel was a bit odd sitting on the left side as a passenger, not to mention they drive on the wrong side of the road here.

We checked in to our hotel which is located near Tokyo Station. The two connecting rooms are simple and have some traditional Japanese elements. We each have our own bed. Got to experience a heated toilet seat with washing functions. Very interesting to say the least. We are only here for two nights so it will be perfect.

We ventured around the area to find some dinner. In our walk we stopped by the Pokemon Cafe but it was full. We ended up at a more traditional Japanese restaurant. Fortunately for me they had fried chicken. Marlene, Jack and Charlie were much more adventurous in their meal. Of course I struggled with chop stix and found it easier just to poke the meat with the tip. Works perfectly and is much more efficient.

Well its time to get some rest. Super tired as we have been up for 22 hours, except Jack and Charlie who got to sleep on the plane.

Stay tuned for more as tomorrow we are driving around in Mario Karts and more.

Hola from Ensenada, Mexico.

Fun fact: Today we visited “La Bufadora,” which I always thought meant “the blowhole.” However, it actually means “the snorting bull.” It gets its name from the sound the water makes as it erupts through the cracks im the rock. It’s caused by the tide going into a small cave and air pressure forcing it out to cause the eruption and noise. It can go 100’ high. You’re welcome.

So what did we do? Well let me tell you….

💦 Went to La Bufadora
🛍️ Walked along the vendors at La Bufadora
🐶 found the cutest and smallest puppy I’ve ever seen
🍹 Had a Cherry Colada at the Habana Banana (it was just like a cherry milkshake)
🛍️Walked around the main tourist street.
👫 Visited my favorite family owned shop where for the past three years I bought a ceramic bird for my tiki bar. Very nice family.
🛳️ Back on board I wore my new big ass leaf shirt
🍹 Enjoyed a wide variety of drinks
👫Had some good times with friends
🌭Got the munchies for a late night snack

It was a full and fun day. You know you want to go on the cruise. Send me an email and let’s get you booked.
