I was 19 the first time I left the country. I was in college in Boston and working full-time, for the first time, as a nanny for a marketing executive at Trip Advisor. One afternoon she approached me and asked if I would consider going to Europe with them to take care of the baby while they were sightseeing. I’ve never been accused of having a poker face—after picking my jaw up off the ground, and stumbling my way through accepting their offer, I stood there, shaking, smiling so big and for so long, my cheeks ached. A disposable camera, England, Ireland, and Italy were the start of what would become a lifelong addiction. Prior to that trip, it had not occurred to me that a world outside of the United States existed, but after that trip, I couldn’t see the world, in all its magnitude, fast enough.

I saw my 7th continent in March of 2019, a love story for a different day, and came back entranced by Antarctica and day dreaming of my next adventure. I had done the 4 day hike to Machu Picchu in June of 2017 and overheard another hiker comparing it to Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain above sea level in the world. I quickly decided Tanzania would be my next destination. A global pandemic said otherwise.

This trip has been 3 ½ years in the making. To say I am elated to be going back to Africa would be an understatement. My solo adventure kicks off with a short, 23 hour plane ride to Rwanda, where I’ll go on a trek in search of the 900 remaining Silverback Gorillas and the endangered Golden Monkeys in the Virunga mountains. From Rwanda, I’ll fly to Tanzania, where I’ll hike 7 days and night summit Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. From Tanzania, I’ll fly to Zanzibar, and scuba dive the Mnemba Atoll in the Indian Ocean.

I am starting BoldAir imperfectly. Even typing the word imperfectly makes me cringe. In my dreams, my logo is artfully designed, manufacturer contracts are locked in, and products are being carefully curated for the BOLD and ADVENTUROUS female traveler. In this fantasy, my startup is fully funded and BoldAir is helping to make packing and travel a convenient and joyful experience through our travel accessories and services. But this amazing and colorful world exists, for now, only in my imagination, keeping me up late at night, both frantic and exhilarated. I don’t have time to wait to start BoldAir perfectly, so I’m starting here and now, imperfectly. I’ll give you a behind the scenes look of what it’s like building a company from the ground up, without the bank account of a well-known socialite or the beautiful face of a persuasive influencer. We’ll talk candidly about where I’m at in the process and the next steps I’m taking. There will undoubtedly be videos of me jumping up and down when things go right and of me crying at 3 AM when I think I should have been an accountant. We’ll chat on the travel experiences that have helped shape who I am and travel experiences I’m dying to have. We’ll chat adventure travel and solo travel, itineraries, and packing essentials. In exchange for you coming on this jet plane with me, and sharing with your friends, I promise I’ll: Never send you to a “link in bio,” I’ll tell you honestly what my travel experiences cost me and how I afford them, and I’ll make time for YOU. Starting Friday, June 17th, you can schedule time with me to chat about YOU, BoldAir, upcoming travel, to request itineraries, or to sing cell phone karaoke (kidding, I can’t sing, but I will clap enthusiastically after you sing your favorite 90’s ballad)

📸: Yellowstone National Park, 1996. Packing Essentials: Floral on Floral separates, headgear, bangs you could tease, pre-teen attitude.
