Split 3 is a notable urban planning and architectural project in Split, Croatia, developed in the 1970s to address the city's rapid growth.

It stands out as a significant example of modernist urbanism in former Yugoslavia.

Unlike many large-scale housing projects of its time, Split 3 emphasized a human-centered approach, integrating residential, commercial, and communal spaces to foster community and pedestrian accessibility.

The project uniquely combined large-scale housing with open public spaces and pedestrian pathways, promoting social interaction and vibrant urban life. Its design philosophy was innovative and internationally recognized, including being featured in MoMA's exhibition "Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948–1980.

As a storyteller and proud resident of Split, I prioritize respecting the local community during my tours.

We make sure not to disrupt residents or other visitors, avoiding blocking windows, doorways, and standing in the middle of the street to keep foot traffic flowing.

I also remind my group not to sit on stairs, as they are vital pathways.

There are parts of the old town and Diocletian’s Palace, like the Vestibule, where you can immerse yourself in unique experiences & enjoy traditional a ca****la Klapa singing, adding to the charm and culture of Split.

How do you feel you can show love and respect towards the places you are living, visiting, or working in?

As a storyteller, I take great pride in practicing respect for my local community, especially in my hometown Split.

One way I demonstrate this is by being mindful of my voice when walking through the streets, particularly in the old town. I ensure that my tone and volume are moderated, directed only towards the people I'm speaking with, and not disturbing others around us.

As a tourist guide, I often lead groups of more than five people. At the beginning of each tour, I make it clear to everyone: "My voice will remain at this level. If you have trouble hearing me, please come closer." This way, we respect the space we share with the community and other visitors, preserving the tranquility and enjoyment for everyone.

If you are visiting Croatia or have visited in recent years, you may have seen these benches. In Split, you can find them on the East Coast, near the bus and train station. These benches are an amazing step forward in sustainability. You can sit on them and rest, and at the same time charge your phones or any other device.

The benches are made by QBen, a company from the Zlatar area, north of Zagreb. It's a fantastic solution for travelers and a testament to Croatian innovation.

Let me know if you have used them. Were they easy to use?

Strossmayer Park, or Đardin as locals call it, lies between two bastions north of Diocletian's Palace near the Golden Gate.

Designated as the main city park in 1859, it features a fountain with a "Putto" from Pavao Bilinić's workshop.

Next to the park, you'll find the monument to Bishop Gregory of Nin, remnants of a medieval monastery, and the Gallery of Fine Arts.

Park is one of the most popular spots during hot summer afternoons .

The short history of the city of Trogir

A prehistoric Illyrian settlement at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 2nd century BC evolved into the Greek colony of Tragurion; during the 1st century BC, it became the Roman municipium Tragurium.

From the 6th to the 11th century, Trogir was part of Byzantine Dalmatia, reduced to a few towns.

From the 11th to the beginning of the 15th century, Trogir recognized the rule of Croatian and Hungarian rulers, although it was occasionally under Venetian rule.

From the beginning of the 15th century until the end of the 18th century, the city was within Venetian Dalmatia.

From the end of the 18th century, except for a brief intermezzo of French rule at the beginning of the 19th century, Trogir was part of Austrian Dalmatia until the end of the First World War, after which it was part of Yugoslavia, and since 1991 it has been part of the Republic of Croatia.

In some areas of Dalmatia, there are still structures that exemplify the skill of self-taught stonemasons. These craftsmen constructed buildings to meet the needs of their families and communities, using natural resources and materials from the local environment. Traditional construction methods were based on local resources and ecological principles, and these techniques, materials, and functionality have been preserved over the centuries, giving a unique character to the houses and rural settlements.

This tradition continued until World War II, after which there was a shift away from traditional knowledge and building skills. The social climate at that time did not embrace traditional values, and urbanization, industrialization, and electrification were seen as the way forward. As a result, the local people themselves started to dismantle the old structures and construct new ones.

Farmers market in Split - Pazar

It serves as a vibrant hub for trade, where the exchange of goods and produce takes place.

Vendors, typically residents from the surrounding villages of Split who cultivate their own food, come to sell their wares, while the buyers are predominantly citizens of Split.

The interactions between them are often laced with humor and sarcasm, reflecting a convergence of diverse worlds. These exchanges highlight the rich, comedic spirit of the local culture, evident on both the buyers’ and vendors’ sides.

Note: If you’re visiting Pazar, take a moment to taste the delicious food and leave a few euros for the vendors. Remember, they work hard, and this is how they earn their livelihood. Our support means a lot to them!

Bocce is a bowling game without pins, known in Dalmatia as "igra na balote" or "na buće ili boće." It is an ancient sport that originated in ancient Greece, was adopted by the Romans, and spread from Italy to other Mediterranean and Alpine countries. Historical sources suggest that bocce was a popular recreational game in ancient Egypt 2,500 years before Christ. Throughout the centuries, bocce has been closely linked with Dalmatia, introduced to the region during the Venetian Republic's rule.

The game is played on open ground, meadows, squares, along roads, and designated areas called "zog," especially during hot summer days, with participants rolling up their sleeves and enjoying a glass of wine on a table or stone slab. Bocce is a genuine sport that requires muscle control, concentration, and nerves, catering to both individuals and teams, fostering a competitive spirit, skill, and strategic thinking. Smooth round balls made of materials like chestnut wood, olive wood, or metal balls in modern times are used in the game.

All balls are the same size except for the "bulin," a smaller target ball that sets the focal point and determines the gameplay. Each location in Dalmatia follows unwritten rules for bocce, typically played to 21 points, with each point representing the bocce closest to the bulin.

Tradicija Kirgin, the oldest pastry shop in Split and one of the town’s longest-running artisan shops, has been a family tradition since 1937.

Located in the heart of the old town Split, this small shop specializes in classic Dalmatian pastries, all handmade nightly without preservatives or additives.

Popular items include their unique cinnamon roll, known locally as Danac (Danish), as well as strudel and sirnica, a sweet bread loaf traditionally enjoyed at Easter to mark the end of Lent.

While their pastries are the main attraction, Tradicija Kirgin also makes some of the best ice cream in Split. Many locals believe that only the shop’s own pastries can rival their ice cream.

When exploring Diocletian’s Palace, be sure to stop by and enjoy the classic flavors in Tradicija Kirigin shop.

As you stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets of Dalmatian towns and cities, you'll often catch glimpses of locals leaning out of their windows, engaging in various activities.

The warm Mediterranean sun bathes their faces as they observe the bustling life below or exchange friendly gestures with passers-by.

Window-to-street interactions are a common scene in Dalmatia. The window is not just a physical opening, but a symbolic link between individuals, a place where stories unfold, laughter resonates, and empathy thrives.

When you see people relaxing behind their windows, hanging their clothes, or enjoying a quiet moment with a cigarette, resist the urge to take photos. Instead, offer a warm smile, extend a kind wish for a good day, and allow them to savor their tranquil moment in peace.

Let these simple gestures of goodwill and respect enhance the beauty of everyday life in Dalmatia.

Picture a time when young men expressed their affection by presenting a necklace crafted from walnuts to the girls who held their hearts captive.

This is known as Grotulja, a unique jewelry piece inspired by ancient golden treasures discovered near the Church of Saint Mihovil in the town of Trilj.

This tradition not only showcases the inventive spirit of the local Trilj residents but also acts as a bridge to their ancient heritage, preserving a profound link to their past.

Creating a Grotulja calls for basic tools—an iron needle, a piece of string, and, of course, walnuts. These necklaces can feature more than 20 or even 30 walnuts strung together, cascading down to the knees of the wearer.

The girls may receive multiple Grotuljas, allowing them to wear several necklaces—a charming tribute to their admirers.

This heartwarming tradition not only represents love and admiration but also illuminates the unique cultural customs that still exist in Trilj.

Make sure to buy Grotulja in September, when Trilj celebrates the day of Saint Mihovil.

A visit to the Pazar, Split market is a must-do activity, whether you're looking to enjoy a leisurely breakfast, a hearty lunch, or just want to grab a coffee and soak up the lively atmosphere of the passing crowd. You can talk to the vendors, purchase local delights, and experience the true essence of sustainable tourism firsthand.

Today, the vibrant Split Market continues to be an important meeting place and a source of joy for many of Split's residents.

____________________________________
Split used to have five flourishing markets, dedicated to various products such as wood, sand, gravel, hay, straw, fruits, and fish.

The most important one was the central market called Pazar, situated near St. Dominic's church, the railway station, and the steamboat dock. Even today, Pazar remains a significant place in Split's market hub.

Local farmers and vendors from the surrounding areas would come to the market every day, bringing fresh produce with them, either on foot, by train, or cart. They would offer their goods to the people of Split with pride and enthusiasm.

In Slavonia, a region in the northeast of Croatia near the town of Vukovar, you will find Borovo, home to the shoe factory of the same name. Founded in 1931, this was the most significant shoe-manufacturing factory in Croatia and former Yugoslavia.

In 1968, the production of work shoes under the name Borosana began. Few shoes carry as much soul within themselves and evoke nostalgia as Borosana. A cult classic once worn by waitresses, cleaners, nurses, and saleswomen... Particularly memorable were the low sneakers for table tennis, known as Startas, which gained popularity in 1987 as the official event footwear for the University Games in Zagreb.

Take a moment to visit the Borovo store in Split and try their (our) Startas and Borosanas.

Whenever I see a wooden slingshot (the Croatian word is Praćka), I think of my grandpa. He was the one who crafted the first Praćka for my brothers, cousins, and friends.

Each of us tried our hand at creating our version of the slingshot. Crafting our own Pracka was an adventure. We explored the woods, spending hours searching for the perfect "V-shaped" branch, a natural design that suited each of us perfectly.

The objective was simple: to aim a small rock at a target, whether it was a tin can, tree, or wall. The winner was determined by the one with the most precise shots hitting the target.

Praćka was more than just a toy; it symbolized childhood creativity and the bonds formed in moments of playful competition and outdoor adventures.

What toy from your childhood did you make yourself or receive from someone?

Joining my Sustainable Tour through Split, you will have the joy of meeting local craftsmen and vendors, symbols of Split.

One of them is Marija, a dear local lady with a memorable story.

Marrying into a family where her father-in-law started the tradition of measuring height and weight post-World War II, Marija initially assisted him. However, as she raised her own children and pursued work at the Yugoplastica factory, she didn’t have time to help him anymore. So her mother stepped in to carry on the legacy.

After her mother’s passing and her own retirement, Marija faithfully took the business and now spends her days by the scale, engaging with neighbors, and preserving the spirit of community. So, next time you’re strolling by, don’t miss the chance to visit Marija’s, get your height measured, and leave a kind word or a donation.

Thank you in advance for@supporting our local people, their stories, and traditions

I feel truly privileged to be a part of crafting a new tour experience on the enchanting island of Šolta.

What makes it even more special is that it’s led by my dear colleague Sandra, a true daughter of Šolta. Born and raised on this island, Sandra’s stories are like whispered secrets, passed down through generations, cherished by those who came before her and held close for those who will follow.
Her dedication to preserving the island’s heritage is evident in the time, passion, and love she pours into every tour she leads.

Today, she took me on a journey through hidden corners of rural Šolta, revealing its timeless beauty, and I found myself utterly captivated.

Just a short catamaran or ferry ride from Split, Šolta beckons with its allure, inviting you to explore its well-known treasures and uncover its hidden gems.

As I bask in the magic of this island, I can’t help but hope that you too will experience its enchantment and fall under its spell, just as I have.

Split, my home and eternal well of inspiration, was the birthplace of Marko Marulić - the father of Croatian literature.

Today, we explored his legacy with Bira (Gytha Gorana Galic), his beloved sister. We walked the same streets he once strolled, savoring captivating tales of his accomplishments.
She shared intriguing stories about her brother and enlightened us about Marko, a wise philosopher and poet who wrote "Judita" – the first book in the Croatian language, during a time when Latin and Italian prevailed in administration and religion.

Fun fact: His work, "Psychology of the Human Soul," includes the earliest reference to 'psychology' in literature, predating the renowned German philosopher Rudolf Gockel.

The day was unforgettable. Thank you, Bira, for your warm hospitality.

This is Nutjak Fortress, positioned on a cliff above the Cetina River near the town of Trilj.

The fortress was constructed in the late 15th century by the nobleman Žarko Dražojević, and it reflects strategic efforts to protect the region against constant threats.

After Dražojević's death in 1508, the fortress eventually fell around 1513, signaling a shift in control due to geopolitical changes. As military strategies evolved, Nutjak's significance diminished.

Today, the ruins of Nutjak Fortress, dominated by a large circular tower and remnants of living quarters, highlight its historical importance.

Archaeological findings suggest its site was significant even in prehistoric times, making Nutjak a symbol of regional resilience and a testament to the complex history of Croatia's defenses against various enemies.

On the Saturday afternoon preceding Palm Sunday, our mother would lead my brothers and me on a quest to gather fresh flowers, all the while sharing tales from her own childhood.
Once we had collected our blooms, we’d return home to carefully rinse them, and then leave them submerged in water overnight.
According to our family tradition, this allowed the angels to bathe in it under the cover of darkness.
It was believed that their celestial presence blessed the water, which we would then use to wash our faces first thing in the morning.

Growing up, this ritual was my favorite part of the Palm Sunday celebrations.

What is yours favorite family tradition for Easter times?

Among the many fascinating facts we learned, one highlight was the cannon firing from Grič exactly at 12:00. This tradition has lasted for more than a hundred years, signaling the time to everyone. It was truly memorable.

I have the privilege of participating in a project called "Jednom davno," where my responsibility is to introduce the art of storytelling to young students in elementary schools across Imotski, Trilj, and Cista Provo.

My goal was to inspire children to engage with the older members of their community, whether they be neighbors, grandparents, or family friends, fostering meaningful connections and shared experiences.

By facilitating these intergenerational interactions, we offer children the opportunity to immerse themselves in the captivating stories of the past. Through these exchanges, they gain insights into historical eras, hear tales of love, and uncover the customs and traditions that once shaped their surroundings.

After listening to and recording these stories, the children were challenged to research a book about their hometown and blend the historical facts from the book with the personal narratives shared by the tellers.

In the final phase of our project, we will conduct walking tours in Imotski, Cista Velika, and Trilj.

You are welcome to join us on these tours to explore the incredible history of each location.

Dry stone walls, standing proudly in Mediterranean regions like Dalmatia, whispers the heartfelt story of hands that built them. Each stone cradled by the builders' hands, a dance of connection as they sought the perfect spot to place it.

These walls blend perfectly into their surroundings, not merely as structures but as living echoes of a bygone era.

In 2018., UNESCO acknowledged dry stone walls as intangible cultural heritage, weaving Croatia's story into the rich tapestry of Mediterranean countries like Spain, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, France, and Switzerland.

In every stone, I find not just a wall but a cherished memory of our ancestors' craftsmanship and the timeless beauty of tradition.

Let us honor the skilled hands that created these stones by enjoying and preserving them for future generations.

“Dabogda te Šolta dopala“!

Closest translation to English would be
“God willing, may you end up in Šolta”

This is how Dalmatian mothers once intimidated their daughters.

The message was clear: If you end up on Šolta, challenges of a tough life and demanding physical labor await you.

Because Šolta was known for lime production, and women often bore the brunt of this demanding work.

17/02/2024

Stećci are medieval monolithic stone monuments prevalent in almost the entire area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as parts of Serbia, Montenegro, and Croatia.

They originated in the second half of the 12th century and were intricately carved and decorated in the 14th and 15th centuries. The production of stećci gradually disappeared in the 16th century.

In the Dalmatian hinterland, the western part of Imotska Krajina, at the intersection of the main road between Cista Velika and Cista Provo, lies the most significant group of stećci in Croatia, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. Decorated with various motifs such as crosses, crescents, stars, vegetal motifs, hunting scenes, scenes of people in a circle, dueling scenes, etc., around 90 stećci are scattered across the meadow on both sides of the road.

Besides the stećci, on the south side of the road, the meadow descends into a valley where you will find seven wells dating back to the early 18th century. They served as sources of drinking water and watering holes for livestock until the second half of the 20th century when most local households built cisterns-wells and abandoned the wells.
