CALCATA, THE ANCIENT VILLAGE OF A THOUSAND MYTHS
The origins of Calcata, province of Viterbo, are lost in the mists of time. Definitely inhabited in the prehistoric era, the area became an important outpost of the Faliscan civilization in pre-Roman times, perhaps even older than the Etruscan one which spread as early as the eighth century BC. C.
The first news of Calcata as an inhabited center, however, dates back to the Middle Ages. For the first time the name Calcata appears in a document dated 772-795. Even today some medieval ruins are still visible in the village and its surroundings. Over the years, then, Calcata experienced periods of great solitude, until 1935 when it was deemed unfit for use: it remained deserted for about 30 years. In the 1960s, it was deemed safe again and returned to be inhabited. It was a group of artists and hippies who, struck by this village suspended in time and far from the city, decided to settle there, which is why Calcata is also known as the town of artists and hippies.
Calcata is also known as the village of witches, since, according to ancient legends, when the strong wind blows, the song of the witches seems to resound through the streets of the village. Furthermore, its conformation has always linked this village to magical and dreamlike tales.
A widespread belief tells us that the place where the town of Calcata now stands was home to a Faliscan altar. On this, mysterious magic and propitiatory rites were performed, perhaps linked to archaic astral cults. Furthermore, it seems that even today esoteric and initiatory rites take place in some houses in Calcata and in some of the numerous caves below the inhabited area.
These singular traits (make Calcata today a real center of urban, social and cultural experimentation, unique in the context of small Italian towns, as well as a treasure trove of art, nature, peace and good living a stone's throw from a metropolis more and more chaotic and crowded.
