Although Glenarm Castle is now the home of the MacDonnell family and the current Lord & Lady Dunluce and their family, Dunluce Castle will always hold a special place in their hearts. It is currently under the guardianship of the NIEA and definitely worth a visit.

There has been a castle in Glenarm since the 13th Century, the present castle was built by sir Randal MacDonnell, 1st Earl of Antrim, in 1636 and it has remained in the familly ever since.

The Sacred Tooth relic of the Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka from India around 305-331 A.D. Since then it became both a symbol of Buddhism in the country and one of divine ruling right to the kings that held it, which is how it came to be in Kandy.

To commemorate the relic and to pray for rains to bless the country during the droughts, the Sacred Tooth relic is paraded around the city during the month of Esala. (July-August)

The parade is believed to be one of the oldest, uninterrupted cultural events that has been practiced through the centuries to the present day.
