🌊MAKAPU’U TIDE POOLS 🔛VIEWS 🌊
Great views come with a fair amount of sweat. This was a God-Awesome hike.

When hiking easy paved trails with ; it’s like “Yah, we go!” But moderate to advanced Hawaii trails,require common safety and an experienced guide. Oahu’s off-the-beaten-path trails can get unsuspectingly intense.

⚠️One hiker with us slipped and bust her nose. This was half-way through the hike — No first aid; no one could carry her. A concussion or broke a leg, she would’ve needed a medivac.

For that I love hiking with a group like it’s safe and fun!

East Oahu can have dramatic scenery- lava rock cliffs & aqua ocean. There’s 2 Makapuu tide pool trails. This is the advanced one.

You’ll work for this but payoff is epic

⏰ Takes 3-4 hrs one way. Moderate/Advanced

✨Starts from Pele’s chair and wraps around to Makapu’u lighthouse trail. You are walking along the cliffside of the island. It’s very rocky. When stepping, beware of loose, sharp volcanic rocks and loose boulders. They loo stable but may not be. It’s a wobbly hike.

TIPS:

☀️Start early. It gets hot.

☀️Bring Hawaii-approved reef safe sunscreen (🔗 in Bio), a wide brimmed hat, closed toe shoes and lots of water 💦. Repeat: lots of water. Sun gets strong.

✨If you’re a traveler, have trip insurance. 🔗

🌊 Never turn your back on the ocean. Waves can get high and sweep you into the ocean.

⚠️Recommended: Go with a Hawaii local who’s hiked it before and knows safety precautions. Accidents can happen on this hike if you’re not careful. I’m not even sure there’s cell reception there.

🚫Do not go solo.

🚫This is not a dog-friendly hike.

🚗 Roadside ample parking. Do not leave valuables in your car or anything that tempts a break-in. Use . There are car break-ins.

🌺Remove your trash. Leave it the way you found it. The ocean and marine life are not a garbage can.

🌺 Be a courteous, kind and respectful traveler and west Oahu locals will mirror you.

Pink Pillbox Trail on West Oahu is an easy to moderate and short hike for gorgeous views of the more pristine side of Oahu.

TIPS:
☀️Start early. The sun hits the opposite side of the hill first.
☀️
Bring reef safe sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat, lots of water 💦 & your hiking shoes!

🚗Do not leave valuables in your car or anything that tempts a break-in. Use common sense.

Whoa. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Surf competition is underway! This is our biggest December event that folks flock to internationally

🚗If you’re going to the event, use public transportation and remember it may take a while. The road to Waimea is one two lane road.

If you’re driving, bring cash for parking ( locals may sell spots in their driveway) and expect to walk.

Hawaii’s Chinatown isn't just about delicious eats (though there are plenty of those!).

I took an art walk stroll through this gritty, historical and artsy neighborhood and was transport back in time with architectural landmarks of an old Hawaii version of Chinatown, old shop signs, hole-in-the-wall Chinese and Vietnamese food shops, kitschy stores and an arts scene.

Hawaii has a handful of tidepools but of course, the best ones aren’t advertised. If you’re staying at Turtle Bay, Kahuku Tidepools is nearby.

Easy trail but more intermediate when you get to the sharp lava rock pools. Visit during low tide. Scenic beaches along the way if you don’t make it.
