🌸 STUNNING VAUCLUSE > Deeply intertwined with the soul of Provence, lavender is the flower that colours the beautiful Vaucluse landscapes mauve. It is also the gentle fragrance that floats from Provençal market stalls in the early summer. The best time to see the lavender fields is between June and the beginning of August – it is at this moment that the lavender plants are really spectacular.

🏰 THE VERTICAL VILLAGE 🕯 > Overlooking the Alzou canyon, the medieval village of Rocamadour is a marvellous balancing act. The first shock is the place itself - in reality a tiny village with a world-wide reputation - seen from l’Hospitalet ! Built into the cliffside on successive levels, 120 metres in length, it clings high above a canyon through which flows the Alzou. Its houses, roofs and churches seem to be part of the rock itself.

What genius conceived Rocamadour and built it? Maybe you'll find out when you come here. As early as the Middle Ages, Rocamadour excited people's admiration. In the 12th C., pilgrims crossed the whole of Europe to come and pray here. The village housed the relics of Saint-Amadour (a famous hermit who sought solitude in Rocamadour). It was also the much-venerated sanctuary of the Black Virgin.

🌅 AN UNFORGETTABLE SIGHT 🌤 > The Mont-Saint-Michel is one of Europe’s most unforgettable sights. Set in a mesmerising bay shared by Normandy and Brittany, the mount draws the eye from a great distance.

This staggeringly beautiful location has long captured the imagination. The story of how the mount came to be a great Christian pilgrimage site dates back to the early 8th century, when Aubert, bishop of the nearby hilltop town of Avranches, claimed that the Archangel Michael himself had pressured him into having a church built atop the island just out to sea !

🌺 WONDERFUL GIVERNY 🌼 > Giverny lies on the bank of the River Seine in Normandy, close to the town of Vernon. Were it not for the arrival of the renowned Impressionist painter Claude Monet in 1883, the village might have remained a quiet provincial backwater. The long years Monet spent at his house in Giverny would turn it into a place of artistic pilgrimage, even in his lifetime.

Monet designed several exuberantly colourful gardens, the most ambitious of which was his famous water garden complete with lily ponds, which initially caused discontent among some local people, as it involved shifting the course of a stream. Monet was not seeking specific inspiration with this plan, but once the ponds were flourishing, they led to some of his very finest paintings – Water Lilies – a series that became beloved around the world and which put the small Normandy village of Giverny on the map. Monet had become a hugely admired artist by this time, and a ‘colony’ of followers came to visit him in Giverny, changing the face of the village. Monet lived here up until his death in 1926.

Following Monet’s death, his property gradually fell into decline. Thanks to generous donations, especially from wealthy American patron Walter Annenberg, the house and gardens were eventually beautifully restored, and have since become a magnet for huge numbers of tourists. An Impressionist art museum has also been built down the road thanks to generous American donors – highlighting Giverny’s Franco-American artistic links (American Impressionist Theodore Earl Butler became a good friend of Monet’s in Giverny, and would go on to marry two of his stepdaughters).

The picturesque village of Giverny still draws artists, art lovers and tourists alike, as you can see from its many galleries, teashops, hotels and restaurants.

✨ MARSEILLE > The Calanques are a series of rocky cliffs and bays between the city of Marseille and the town of Cassis, in the south of France. They’re essentially inlets that have been formed in the limestone cliffs, leaving behind a series of beautiful little bays. The word Calanques, comes from calanche in Corsican and calancas in Occitan, which means “inlet”. The area has a very specific eco-system (with no soil – the plants live in the limestone) and has been a protected area since 2012, when the entire 20 mile stretch of Calanques was designated a national park.

🥨 STRASBOURG > In Strasbourg, the Petite France district is arguably the city’s most romantic district, especially at nightfall. A succession of canals along which have been built beautiful half-timbered houses gives to the district a undeniable charm.

La Petite France was the corner of fisherman, tanners and millers. In the 16th century, a hospital was established here for the soldiers of King of France François I. At this time, Strasbourg was still a Free City in the Holy Roman Empire and many soldiers of the French king were afflicted with venereal diseases contracted during the Italian Wars. This disease was locally known as “the French Illness” by the population of Strasbourg who was convinced that it was France’s fault. The Grand Magistrate of the city decided to isolate the sick people in a building located in the tanners’ district. The expression “Petite France” created by the inhabitants to refer to the hospital has, over the course of time, been applied to the whole district.

ROUEN, NORMANDY > The historic city centre of Rouen is a “must-see”. It would be a shame to pass through without a stroll through its fascinating heritage: gothic churches and mansions, restored half-timbered houses, well-maintained public gardens… the “city of 100 bell towers” from the words of Victor Hugo has underwent a costly upmarket restoration of its historical centre, largely pedestrianised.

ARLES, CAMARGUE > Arles is the largest city in France with the surface area being 758 km². It is encircled by an environment of exceptional beauty. Once a metropolis of Roman Gaul, Arles became a symbole of ardent Christianity as can be seen through the arena, the Alyscamps burial grounds, the amphitheater and the Roman baths of Constantin.

Arles is now the gateway to Camargue, pland of the Gypsies and meeting place of the Camargue cowboys. Today the ferias or bull runs and bull fights are held in this very same arena (12,000 seats) that was the scene of the Roman games in the first century !
