Our rest day in Santiago de Compostela had us first taking the city walking tour. (We love these free city tours, where you tip at the end). We then visited the “Pilgrims Museum”. So much history in Santiago and the importance of Saint James. After all those walking miles we indulged ourselves with some gelato, and then spent the evening enjoying the street entertainment and a few glasses of wine while the locals celebrated one of the biggest events of the year -“The Summer Solstice”. Only 4 miles around the city today so my shins were very appreciative…

Today we completed our Camino de Santiago Portuguese Pilgrimage. (Often called the way of the Apostle Saint James) - 16 days, 284km/176 miles, 15 different hostels/Alburgues/Private Rooms, many-many new friends, and memories we will never forget. Arriving at the Cathedral early this morning we quickly received our official certificates as Pilgrims, attended the incredible noon Pilgrim’s Mass (which we were very fortunate to witness the swinging of the Botfumeiro which has been cleansing Pilgrims with incense since the 12th century - this is not something they do often), viewed the crypt of the Apostle Saint James , and then enjoyed a dinner of prawns with a well deserved glass of wine. An incredible 2 weeks! The Camino de Santiago has been a special experience … Buen Camino!

Today we walked from Padron ➡️Milladoria stopping only about 4 miles from Santiago… We planned on this stop so we have an easy hike into Santiago in the morning for the celebration of our official credentials, as Pilgrims, and for the special Mass at that cathedral for arriving pilgrims. Mike’s shins are still a problem but walking with Hamlet & Linette from Puerto Rico passed the time along. A few memories from todays’s hike include several inspiring Spanish bagpipers on the trail and the goats Joanne loved. Our last night on the trail we opted for the real pilgrim experience at Alburgue Milladoria in the bunks. We heard this is a top shelf Alburgue and we can confirm it is…. Tomorrow - Santiago- Buen Camino!

One of the best parts of the Camino is the people you meet along the journey. Everyday you walk with different Pilgrims and somedays you meet Pilgrims again and catch up on your respective journey since the last time you crossed paths. Today we walked with Margo from Ontario, Canada and Lindsay from Washington State from Calas de Reis➡️Padron. Of course after about 14 miles we had to share a few Estrella Galicia’s Beers… We’re only 28km from Santiago. Hoping the shins hold up🤞🤞🤞-Buen Camino

Walked from Pontevedre➡️Calas de Reis today. 35,000 steps/14.5 miles. We met a new friend Carol, from New Zealand, that we talked to for hours which helped Mike take his mind off his painful “Shin Splints” for awhile. We have less than 40km to go before arriving in Santiago which we will breakdown into 2 more days. Lots of Pilgrims on the trails now as many start in Tui as that’s the 100km mark which is the minimum needed to get your “Compestella Pilgrim stamp” in Santiago. You also need to get 2 stamps a day. After 245km and a full book of stamps we should be good😊…Now for that last 40km with those “shin splints”???

We got back on the trail today and back on our game. Probably more than we should have with Mike’s shin splints. Quintela/Redondela➡️Pontevedre. (36,727 steps/15.47 miles or 25km. (Add to that the most elevation gain of the trip with nearly 1,500ft)- yeah we may be a little nuts though given the increase in the Pilgrims on the trail, the last 2 days, we had to make reservations and now get to them. Our place in Pontevedre is perfect where we met some fellow German and then French pilgrims and then had an incredible dinner of garlic prawns and marinated clams…. Exhausting but great day….Buen Camino.

Great big shoutout to our host Chris from our guest house last night at Lar de Carmen in Quintela, Redondela. We had such a great time getting to know her and her family. The accommodations were top notch and the dinner made by her Mom was amazing. From the bone broth soup at our arrival, getting our wet clothes cleaned and dried, our wet hiking shoes stuffed with newspapers, comfy slippers provided, great food, and great company - We give this place our highest recommendation. PS: that’s the view from our room. Buen Camiño and Thanks Chris…

Today we got the lesson to trust the Camino and it will provide what you need: We stayed in Vigo last night which is a ways off the Camino Coastal Route. Our hike should have been easy, we thought,: from Vigo to Redondela though Vigo and the adjacent areas have extremely steep inclines and up and downs. After 5 miles we were completely lost and soaked from the pouring rain. We then met Borga ( A local Tattoo artist walking his dogs) who helped us for a few miles off the busy roads. After that we continued on to about the 8 mile mark in the pouring rain and with only 3 miles to go we again were totally lost and soaked to another level. A local couple stopped in their car to try to help us. After about 10 minutes using “Google Translator”, in the pouring rain, they said they had never seen any pilgrim this far off course. They then proceeded to load our gear and drive us nearly 20 plus switchbacks and hills which was only a few miles to our Albergue for the night. Our hosts greeted us with slippers, hot showers, broth soup, a glass of wine, stuffed newspapers in our soaked shoes, gave Mike an Ice pack for his leg, and then made us a dinner…. Terrible hike today but an incredible experience . Thanks to our Angels of the Camino today … Still Buen Camino but it was definitely touch and go for awhile 😳

Buen Camiño Baiona ➡️Vigo. Walked most of the 18km/11 miles in the rain today. We ventured inland from the coast and probably was our least favorite day of the trip so far. Not much to see, very rainy, and that shin splint is still making things tough. Nonetheless, we still managed to get a few stamps along the way (which is a daily occurrence along the Camino) . We arrived in Vigo and spent the rest of the day with the ice pack and trying to warm back up. Still … Buen Camino.

Our rest day today in Baiona, Spain was definitely needed. With Mike nursing his “shin splint” & Joanne nursing a cold we still managed over 5 miles in the city including a tour of the famous 12th century “ Castelo de Monterreal (incredible views), the lavandaria (for laundry), and the local pub for drinks/dinner (Bodega Estrella de Baiona). We have Loved our time in Baiona! Bueno Camino.”

Buen Camino - Day 8 Oia➡️Baiona, Spain. We started out in the rain for the first 3 hours and then the sun came out and it was beautiful ! The 13 miles today gave us our first injury as Mike developed a severe “shin splint” from all the concrete walking. Today marked the 1/2 way point after completing 160km/100 miles.! The shoreline today may have been the best yet! Tomorrow is a rest day, which is good, as this is a great place to explore… Our hostel is terrific here!-Buen Camino

Buen Camino -Day 7 AGuarda➡️Oia. We thought Portugal’s coastline was incredible and now Galicia, Spain’s coastline is unbelievable. They are different though both have that salt air, and crashing waves , which never gets old…Also, It doesn’t get dark here until around 10:30pm … Note: 5 apps that help us Pilgrims everyday on the journey…1)Camino Ninja, 2)Wise Pilgrim, 3) What’s app, 4) Booking.com,and 5)the IPhone gps… Buen Camino!

We Hiked from Ancora, Portugal ➡️AGuarda, Spain today. Yes we have now hiked into another country. We arrived by a ferry(actually a glorified row boat with motor) , which deposited us on a Spanish Beach. The beach is part of Galicia, Spain. Pretty informal here with border crossing. Nobody checks anything … we met new friends from Hungary, Poland , Australia, New Zealand, Poland, UK, North Carolina, Oregon, Washington, Tennessee, and Washington state … Buen Camino from Spain!

Buen Camino -Day 5 (Rest Day in the beautiful Beach town of Ancora) - few walking miles today but just some relaxing by the beach … Reminding ourselves it’s not about the goal rather the “Journey” PS - we discovered “Tremocos” today. Often known as the Portuguese bar peanut. (Actually lupine beans/legumes)- “Bom Camino”(Portuguese way of saying it )…

Buen Camino Day 5- Amarosa Beach ➡️Ancora, Portugal. We hiked 37,004 Steps/16.67miles or 27km- (This was a real stretch day for us as we were hiking into a a very strong headwind all day ). Today was our first ferry boat ride on the hike✅, our first river crossing at an ocean outlet (thanks to the local surfer for help with that one over the rocks )✅, and several heavily wooded sections with downed trees on the paths adjacent to the beach✅. We consumed every drop of water we had as the wind really drys you out. Arrived in Ancora at a “Private Alburgue” which is super, right on the beach. Because we have been flexible in our bookings we think we might just take an extra (well deserved)rest day here tomorrow. All part of the journey. Buen Camino…

Camino Laundry… When you pack this light with only 3 days of clothes, laundry is a big part of your Camino Pilgrimage. 1) a set to wear, 2)a set of back-up, 3) a set to wash…. If you miss a day then (2) to wash 😳. Hand washing works some days and then the “Lavandaria” works on others. Washing isn’t the issue, it’s the drying. Few places have dryers and if you arrive later in the day the sun can’t help you enough. Today we had an 8:00am Lavandaria dryer stop… All part of the Camino. “Buen Camino”….

Buen Camino -Day 4. Fao ➡️Amorosa Beach. (Total of 32,491 steps/ 14.79 miles)- Our routine now is to start early, stop for breakfast after 4/5 miles, try to take a break around 10 Miles??, and then the push for the place for the night. Took a small detour today that had us walking a smooth stone beach and then sand for a couple of miles (not good) and then boardwalks and cobblestones the rest of the day. We are lucky so far, but have met many others with blisters, and other injuries from the hike🤞🤞🤞. (Camino hint- Use packing cubes…)-Buen Camino!

Buen Camino Day 3 Vila Do Conde ➡️FAO. Started the day in rain though we were prepared with our rain gear and backpack rain covers . 13.75 Miles today with plenty of beaches, churches , and a very nice Hostel for the night. We also managed to do some much needed laundry at the nearby “Lavandaria ”… which had an adjacent bar for a couple of “Super Bocks” while waiting for the dryers. Hints for the Camino de Santiago - “INJINJI Toe Socks”- A MUST! Buen Camino…

Buen Camino Day 2 …Perafita➡️Vila Do Conde, Portugal - 25,000 steps/11 miles. The Camino really thru some challenges today including: Beautiful scenic miles on the board walks , a couple of miles on cobblestones, a detour on the beach, nearly 2 miles of deep sand, and much hotter temps… Very happy arriving at our stay for the night in Vila Do Conde at Venceslau Wine-Boutique- Hotel -Restaurant … Cheers & Buen Camino…

“Buen Camino” (translation is “good journey”) - which the locals & fellow pilgrims greet you with on the Camino… Day one, today, we did 31,301 steps and 13.62 miles with our packs. Yeah we jumped right in! Saying goodbye to Porto this morning we headed West to the ocean and then North along the coastline. Our path is the “Senda Litoral Camino”. We had a great, but tiring, day with stops for breakfast in Matisinhos, and a late day celebratory beverage on the beach in Perafita. With a beautiful sunset it’s time for some rest before starting Day 2 tomorrow… “Buen Camino”!
