About Dawei in Myanmar
Dawei
Dawei is the capital of Thanintharyi Region and also is the city of south-eastern Myanmar. It has many charming pagodas and beautiful, amazing beaches. Dawei is a port at the head of the Dawei river from the Adman sea. From the 11th to 13th centuries, Dawei was part of the Pagan Empire. From 13th to 16th century, it was a part of the Sukothai Kingdom and its successor the Siam. After independence in 1948, the city became part of the Tenasserim Division , which also included today’s Mon State. In 1989, The city’s English name was changed feom Tavoy to Dawei and Tenasserim became Thanintharyi. It is a costal covering an area of over 4184 sq km.
Dawei Shin 9 Shin
Dawei which are very powerful, traditional and historical pagodas. Despite having iesser historical and archaeological evidence, nine pagodas under titles of Shin. Shin 9 Shin pagodas can be divided into three categories; mountain pagoda, forest pagodas and city pagodas. The three mountain pagodas are Shin Sandaw pagoda, Shin Hmyaw Taung Pagoda and Shin Taunt Pon pagoda. The three forest pagodas are Shin Datwe pagoda, Shin Zalun pagoda and Shin Tauk Htein pagoda. Then, the last three city pagodas are Shin Pin Khayu pagoda, Shin Mokhtee pagoda and Sin Oak Aww pagoda.
Beautiful Beaches
Being a costal region, Dawe is home to amazing beautiful beaches such as Maungmakan Beach, Myawyit Beach, Phoe Phoe Kyauk Beach, Myin Khwar Aww beach which are popular tourist attractions. Tourist can engage in activities such as snorkeling, fishing and boat trip.

Shin Sandaw pagoda Shin Sandaw pagoda located at the top of the hill in the Kaleinaung Sub township is one of Dawei’s historic Shin 9 Shin pagodas. The hill is 47 miles north of Dawei. Three pieces of relic hair of Kakusanda, Konagamana and Gotama who had enlightened in Buddha World were enshrined in the rocky reliquary which is 30 by 30 elbows each in length and width and 40 elbows in depth. The Buddha Pujaniya festival of the pagoda holds on the full moon day of Tabaung yearly.
Shin Hmyaw Taung pagoda Shin Hmyaw is a hilly pagoda in Launglon township, located in Kyethlut Village, 52 miles from Dawei. According to the history of pagoda, Shin Hmyaw Taung pagoda was built on the full moon day of Tabaung and Kings Alaungsithu and Narapatisithu performed meritorious deeps there. The historical books of the pagoda mentioned six wonderful points of Shin Hmyaw Taung pagoda.
Shin Taunt Pon pagoda The pagoda was built on more than 2,000 ft high hill, 18 mile from Dawei, in Thayetchaung township. Taunt Pon means quiver or a pile quivers. Hunter Maung Nwar abandoned his hunting livelihood and set fire to hunting equipment on the hill of Shin Taunt Pon pagoda. Then, he himself was initiated into hermit with the title of Shin Govinda who built Shin Taunt Pon pagoda.
Shin Datwe pagoda Shin Datwe pagoda built by Shin Zan is located in Maungmeishaung Village, seven miles from Dawei-Yebyu motor road. As local people said as Shin Zan threw his relic into the hair with a vow to build a pagoda, the relic was flying above the place of current pagoda. So, it was well-known as Shin Datwe Pagoda.
Shin Zalun pagoda Shin Zalun pagoda is located in old Thagara city in Launglon township and was built by a woman.
Shin Tauk Htein pagoda `Although some said Shin Tauk Htein pagoda located in KAmyawkin Village of Launglon township in Dawei District was one of nine Shin pagodas, the original Shin Tauk Htein pagoda was the Buddha image kept in the ordination hall, east of the pagoda. People called Shin Tauk Htein pagoda as a relic pagoda where the gala rice offering ceremony takes places on every full moon day of Thatingyut.
Shin Pin Khayu pagoda It was assumed that the pagoda located on Arzani Road in South Kayinpyin Ward of Dawei was built 300 years ago. A fire broke out almost thw whole South Kayinpyin Ward of Dawei on 26 March 1996 but the pagoda remained safely. Hence, the pagoda became more famous.
Shin Mokhtee pagoda It was assumed that Shin Mokhtee Village, six miles from Dawei, derived from Mottathunakhagara City. The pagoda in Shin Mokhtee Village, located on right side of Dawei-Myeik motor road, was enshrined with Shin Mokhtee Buddha image.
Shin Oak Aw pagoda Shin Oak Aw pagoda, located in the precinct of Shwekyaunggyi Monestary in Peinnwtaw Ward of Dawei was built with significant architectural works including 11 circular decorative bands. King of Shwetaundsar Min Shin Zaw built Shin Oak Aw pagoda as NanU pagoda. The King built Shwe Taung Sar Pagoda two years after construction of Shin Oak Aw pagoda.
Lawka Tharaphu pagoda Lawka Tharaphu pagoda is a Buddhist pagoda in Dawei, Myanmar. The temple is notable for a 74 m sculpture of a reclining Buddha located on the Pagoda’s ground. The pagoda is a popular tourist destination.
Maungmakan Beach Maungmakan is a village and beach located approximately 12 km north-west of Dawei, thr capital of Thanintharyi Region. It is the second oldest beach established in Myanmar after Ngapali.
Myaw Yit Pagoda Myaw Yit pagoda is a Buddhist pagoda located in Dawei off the coast of Maungmagan Beach. It is situated on a small island surrounded by the sea, and that makes it worth visiting as the temple isn’t otherwise unique. A wooden bridge connects the pagoda with the shore, and there are a few viewpoints near the temple which are hotspots among the tourists for witnessing gorgeous sunsets.
