This is our 3rd time in the Mara. The migration is an awesome scene definitely worth seeing, but if we went back I think we’d choose the non-migration time. There is still so much on offer, and very few other vehicles. Remember to follow Alexa Safaris to keep track of what’s happening in our world. We’d love to assist you with a special trip

Great effort by all concerned, including our hiking colleague for being brave enough to be carried!

It’s three and a half years since we tried to visit Rwanda in 2021. Back then the land borders were closed under Covid regulations and we were not allowed to drive across from Tanzania or Uganda. It was a world gone mad - a full aircraft of mask-wearing passengers could land in Kigali, but James and I, travelling alone in our private vehicle were considered a bigger Covid risk. Looking back, it really was a crazy time.

So finally we have made it here. Landing at 9pm last night, of our entire plane, four of us go to Arrivals, the rest are in transit to other destinations. I wonder if they know what they are missing… Customs and Immigration complete, we collect our bags, buy local SIM cards for our phones and meet our driver guide, Jean-Marie. English has only been a teachable language since 2009. Prior to that, French and the national language Kinyarwanda were taught in schools so French names abound. It’s after 10pm but the traffic in Kigali is still hectic. Motorbike taxis weave in and out of the trucks and cars, and to compound what seems like chaos, in Rwanda you drive on the right hand side of the road. However, unlike other African cities we have encountered, the roads are in excellent condition, the traffic lights work, police are on hand to divert traffic around a broken down lorry, and the whole system works. It’s a complete contrast to the likes of Kampala or Dar Es Salaam! We check into the Kigali Serena Hotel, and it’s time for a local beer on the verandah around the pool in the cool evening air and to take a moment to appreciate our arrival in Rwanda. It’s after midnight when we climb into bed, a long day since the alarm went off at 4.30am.

Our year of travelling Africa

Brave or stupid, for better or worse, we have jumped into the deep-end and taken a year off to travel Africa! This has been a dream in the making for a long time, and it is finally happening. In 10 days time, we set off for the first of these trips, seven weeks in Namibia. Follow us, travel with us, keep in touch as we share our adventures, good times (and no doubt, some bad times).
