Sam and my Africa tour expanded our world on so many fronts. But mainly it was to understand that really it’s about getting out there and experiencing life. Not everyone can travel the way we did, but Alexa Safaris will help you experience the some of the specialties we encountered during the 11 months in Africa. We have been in our new house for 9 weeks - it’s the longest time we have been in any one place since 2020. It’s been a whirlwind of movers, unpacking, Christmas, family and friends. So when we saw the photos on Tuesday evening of the Augrabies Falls in flood, we grabbed the opportunity to just get in the car and drive on Wednesday morning. Sitting in the car and covering mile after mile is second nature to us, and by late afternoon we arrived in Augrabies. It was worth every kilometer… The falls are spectacular, the power of nature at its most impressive. SANParks

There are two public viewing areas in the park you can access, and there are numerous private platforms where you can enjoy a guided bat experience. We decide to visit the public Fibwe site this evening to get an idea of how this works. 5pm sees us at Fibwe with the armed escort (there are hippo and elephant around here), and we wait. A few other campers and lodge guests arrive, and we all sit and wait. Minutes after 6pm the bats start to fly high over us. It’s one, and then three, and then twelve, fourty, one hundred, two thousand, five hundred thousand, millions…. The sky is filled with bats heading out to feed for the night and as far as we can see in our binoculars, there are bats. It takes about half an hour until the skies clear and they are gone for the night. The Suz to the rescue…
We have one surprise as we sit at the Tabora Hotel with our drinks. Somewhere down the road we can hear someone practicing the trumpet, and of all songs, he is playing Nkosi Sikele’ iAfrika. We are intrigued and we walk out the gate following the music. We find a young man practicing on the bank outside his school. He speaks little English. James is trying to ask him why he is playing this song, and we are trying to explain that this is the National song of South Africa. He is completely confused, does not understand us at all, but eventually looks at us like we are completely mad and says “national song Tanzania”. Well, now we are the confused ones!!! He plays again for us as we sing our SA version, we thank him and he seems pleased to have made us happy. The full force of the Nile dropping into the Murchison Falls
By now we are stunned, what a mind blowing last morning! We head back to camp to reboil the kettle and fill the flask before we leave the park. But we have one task - as we round the corner we encounter a young French couple, stuck in the mud. The Suz lends a helping hand and we winch them out and send them on their way.
