Tolar National Parks Trip, New Mexico edition (state 3 of 3):

We felt like we were on a different planet when we visited White Sands National Park in New Mexico. This park was added to our trip to give the kids some fun because you can sled down the sand dunes!

The sand is gypsum so it is different than the sand we are all used to at the beach. It is soft and powdery, almost like kinetic sand. It doesn’t stick to you and get everywhere like beach sand does. And the best part…it stays cool. Even in hot summer temperatures, the sand was so cool. We all had shoes on at first but ended up taking them off because the sand was so cool to the touch.

The park itself was very neat to experience. We got there first thing in the morning to sled and we were the only people around in our section of the park for an entire hour. I commented many times on how peaceful and serene it was. But to truly experience something like you’ve never witnessed before, go back for golden hour/sunset. Oh my word, AMAZING is the word I will use. The park is so vast, that we felt alone again even though we could see other specks of people on their own sand dunes across the park. The color, the perfect temperature, the quiet, the beauty all made for one of the most unique experiences I have ever had. None of us wanted to leave as we watched the sun go down.

A couple tips:
When you first enter the park, keep driving. There is lots of vegetation at the beginning that might make you wonder where is the perfect stretch of white sand. Keep driving, you will see the beauty shortly.

You can purchase sleds at Home Depot or Walmart in Alamogordo, NM which is just 15 minutes straight down the road. You can also purchase sleds at the White Sands National Park gift shop but they will cost you a pretty penny. Our hotel actually had them that we could use for free. Mega score!

Tolar National Parks Trip, Arizona edition (state 2 of 3):

Onto our second state. We drove from Joshua Tree, California to Flagstaff, Arizona. Flagstaff is about 80 minutes away from Grand Canyon National Park and it worked out perfectly for us as there was much to do in and around Flagstaff. We totally lucked out in the weather as temps were in the mid-70s and low-80s. Quite a change from Palm Springs and Joshua Tree.

Wow! That is the word I kept saying when we visited the Grand Canyon. (Pictures just don’t do it justice) I knew it would be incredible and beautiful and amazing but it was seriously even MORE than I expected it to be. It was so beautiful it almost looked fake. We spent half a day at the park because the sights were so gorgeous…of course we had to stay for sunset. We were nervous that viewing a sunset might not happen because it got a little cloudy, but everything cleared and we were rewarded with beautiful colors. I loved how the sunset turned the canyon purple.

While in Arizona, we also visited:
-Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
This is a volcano that erupted 1,000 years ago and we got to hike the mountain and see the lava flow
-Wupatki National Monument
Wupatki and Sunset Crater are actually connected to each other but we visited on separate days. Wupatki is an old Pueblo that had over 100 rooms. It was something amazing to be seen for sure. There is also a blowhole by the Pueblo and its actual use is a mystery.
-Downtown Flagstaff
We discovered a self-guided, haunted walking tour and toured around the downtown area.
-Petrified Forest National Park
This was right on the way to New Mexico so we made a quick stop along the way. Kendall and I both had a different expectation of what the Petrified Forest would be from what it actually was. But it was certainly cool to learn exactly how the wood was petrified and to get to feel it.

Tolar National Parks Trip, California edition (state 1 of 3):

We flew into Palm Springs and also stayed there as the city is about an hour outside of Joshua Tree. We knew it was going to be hot and it was; most days temps were between 105-109. The highest we saw it get was 113. Luckily we were smart about when we ventured outside to the park so the hot temps were not unbearable at all. (These temps got nothing on a full day at Walt Disney World in the middle of the summer with high humidity - so I was actually ok!)

We toured around Palm Springs by car a bit and introduced the kids to In-N-Out for lunch. I was constantly amazed by the beauty of the mountains that completely surround the city. We checked out the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which is a suspended (and rotating!) cable car that takes you up to the top of Mt. San Jacinto State Park. The temperature at the top of the mountain is 30 degrees cooler than it is down in Palm Springs, so we visited right after lunch in the heat of the day.

Joshua Tree National Park was our California destination and quite an experience! It is some of the most unique and beautiful landscape I have ever seen. We spent two days exploring the park, hiking trails to see cool rock formations, climbing all the rocks we could find and enjoying the incomparable beauty of the Joshua Trees. I have a camera roll full of photos of the unique trees that remind us of Dr. Seuss type designs. Skull Rock, Arch Rock, and Heart Rock were our favorite rocks to visit. And enjoying the sunset in the middle of the quiet desert with only my family around was one of the coolest experiences ever.

Safe travels back home today! My sister and her bestie just spent the whole week at Walt Disney World for such a fun girl’s trip. They got to visit several new resorts they’ve never visited before as they planned a day where they could resort hop to experience all sorts of neat activities. They also rode some new rides and got to do everything THEY wanted to do. And of course they enjoyed so much delicious food at the parks and resorts (Chefs de France, Crystal Palace and Tambu Lounge to name a few!).
