INAKA Special >

Christianity was first propagated in in 1569, followed by a period of strict religious prohibition. In 1934, a Japanese architect built a Gothic-style church in , which faces a quiet inlet. The interior of the church, lit by light streaming in through stained glass windows, has an unusual mat flooring. It is also called the "Sea Cathedral" because of its location on the seaside, and its landscape has been selected as one of the “ of Japan".

In addition, the unique religious culture in which people disguised themselves as Buddhists and secretly continued to believe in during the oppression has been registered as a under the name of "Hidden Christian Sites in and Amakusa". Among its constituent properties, the only registered one in Amakusa is "Sakitsu Village in Amakusa".

Surrounded by three oceans, is a treasure trove of marine products. In summer, dried octopuses can be seen swaying in the wind along the road, giving it the name "Amakusa Ariake Road. Along the road, visitors can taste “ " ( eight dishes) using local octopuses. It is eight different kinds of octopus dishes named after the eight legs of the octopus. Among them, the "octopus steak," a whole octopus cooked tenderly, will surprise you with its flavor and tenderness.

And there are some delicacies that can only be found here in Amakusa. It is a . You crack open the legs of a boiled starfish and eat the egg inside. Also, Amakusa raw sea , which is grown on seaweed from the waters around Amakusa, is a rare delicacy and can be tasted only here.

Other specialties of Amakusa are the tiger , a local delicacy that fills your mouth with the flavor and sweetness of the natural product. And Amakusa Daio, called the "rare local chicken," is raised in the blessed natural environment of Amakusa, and it’s chewy texture and juicy fat are superb. There are restaurants where you can enjoy both of these Amakusa delicacies.

In , " " kept their faith secretly even after Christianity was banned. was the earliest built in Amakusa after the ban on Christianity was lifted. The present building is a church built in 1933 by a French missionary who devoted his life to evangelizing Amakusa, in cooperation with his followers.

The rich nature is also a highlight of Amakusa. The giant Japanese sea fig tree in is over 100 years old, and its majestic appearance as if it were clutching a huge rock is a reminder of its life force. And in , one of the clearest-water beaches in Kyushu, you can see tropical fish even when skin diving. Also, if the timing is right, you might be able to see sea visiting to lay eggs.

" " originated in , a key location for marine transportation in Amakusa, in the late , and later spread with sailors to become the root of other dances in various parts of Japan such as and . The Ushibuka Haiya Festival is where you can enjoy it.

To the west of central , in an area surrounded by open and inland seas, there is the Amakusa Islands which consists of countless islands. Among them are the large and , which can also go to the surrounding islands and Kyushu by bridges.

From the time the missionary first landed in Kyushu in the 16th century, many churches were built and became the base for missionary work. However, was banned by the government of the time in the 17th century, and a period of the followed until about 260 years later when the faith could be freely practiced. In Amakusa and , there were people who secretly kept their faith even after it was banned. They were called " ." The history of their hardships and the churches that still stand today are registered as a Site, and their exotic charm that blends the West and the East attracts many domestic and international visitors.

The bamboo is hollowed out and stuffed with chicken and vegetables, and the whole bamboo is put on the fire to be enjoyed with the aroma of the bamboo.

It consists of the god searching for hiding in the Iwato rock, the goddess dancing to lure her out, and the scene where the Iwato in Iwaya rock cave is broken open and Amaterasu Omikami is greeted. The last picture shows a slightly humorous dance performed by and , the two gods who gave birth to Japan.
