1. Earth's newest "baby volcano" On 10 July, a volcanic eruption near Litli-Hrútur, south-west Iceland, caused cracks in the Earth to open up and create a new "baby volcano". Three fissures appeared in the north-eastern part of the foothills of Litli-Hrútur, a small mountain on the Reykjanes Peninsula in south-west Iceland, and began spewing molten lava into the air, accompanied by a gas plume. As the lava built up, it rapidly developed into a large crater, forming what some have described as "Earth's newest baby volcano". In just one week, the crater has grown to about 30 metres high and continues to grow every day.
