Did you know that Kopras or Copra can be found in Ramon Magsaysay?
Since Ramon Magsaysay has lots of Coconut Trees, kopras or copra became one of the main source of income of the old villagers of the Municipality
Copra or Kopras refers to the dried coconut kernels from which coconut oil is expelled. Traditionally, the coconut kernels are sun-dried, especially for export, before the oil, also known as copra oil, is pressed out. (Wikipedia)

Ramon Magsaysay is a landlocked, 4th class municipality in the province of Zamboanga del Sur. It occupies a total area of about 113.70 square kilometers of land, whose population of 25,282 people (projection as of year 2005) are distributed among the 27 barangays that the municipality is currently politically subdivided into. The majority of the municipality’s land is sloping and is mostly devoted to farming, especially coconuts. Ramon Magsaysay is easily accessible via land and sea via the province’s capital, Pagadian City.

Ramon Magsaysay was originally called Liargao, long before the Spaniards came to Zamboanga del Sur. It got this name from the native Subanens, who named it “Ligaw”, which means “lost on the way”, due to the river in the area whose direction is unusual: it seems to go up the mountain instead of going down to the sea.

It wasn’t until February 13, 1957 that the President of the country that time, President Ramon Magsaysay, issued Executive Order No. 239 which created made Liargao into a municipality. There were 22 barrios that were included in its judicial borders at that time, and the first appointed municipal mayor was the Hon. Alfonso M. Donaire, Sr. He was inducted into office on April 21, 1957 by Governor Bienvenido Ebarle. That same year, the House on Congress passed Republic Act No. 2788, which changed then name of the municipality from Liargao to Ramon Magsaysay. Mayor Donaire served as the town’s Chief Executive until his retirement in May 1986.

The livelihood of the people of Ramon Magsaysay is mostly agriculture and agro-forest industrial based. Aside from the main produce which is coconuts, the province is also quite well known for the production of the sawali, more locally known as amacan. It is mostly made up of sliced bamboo, manually woven, and is used as a substitute for plywood or hardiflex boards. Sawali weaving has already become a tradition in the town since the early 50’s, and became prominent upon the issuance of SB Resolution No. 15-2004 which requires the planting on bamboos, especially in riverbanks.

TUESDAY FACTS 🤯
What is Tubâ or Coconut Wine? 🍹
Tubâ is a Filipino alcoholic beverage created from the sap of various species of palm trees. During the Spanish colonial period, tubâ was introduced to Guam, the Marianas, and Mexico via the Manila Galleons. They remain popular in Mexico, especially in the states of Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán, and Guerrero.
BUT did you know that Tubâ are very well-known here in our Municipality? The source of income of the people of Ramon Magsaysay before is the coconut, they produces different products from it and one of it is the "Tubâ" or the COCONUT/PALM WINE. It is UNIQUE, ORGANIC, and CHEMICAL-FREE.
In every family gathering or feast we are preparing coconut wine. We learned that Tubâ is nothing more than the fermentation of the sap taken from coconut tree or other types of palm trees, so it means drinking Tubâ is surprisingly good for the health. Just make sure to drink it moderately.
So what are you waiting for? Visit our place and taste the sweet and feel the heaven of our tuba product with your family and friends. LET’S GET DRUNK AND ENJOY LIFE❗

Catering services for Subanen day in celebration of adlaw sa Ramon Magsaysay 2018 Tender
MUNICIPALITY OF RAMON MAGSAYSAY, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR has floated a tender for Catering services for Subanen day in celebration of adlaw sa Ramon Magsaysay 2018.

"Subanon (also spelled Subanen or Subanun) is an indigenous group to the Zamboanga peninsula area, particularly living in the mountainous areas of Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental, Mindanao Island, Philippines. The Subanon people speak the Subanon language. The name is derived from the word "soba" or "suba," a word common in Sulu, Visayas, and Mindanao, which means "river," and the suffix "-nun" or "-non" which indicates a locality or place of origin. Accordingly, the name "Subanon" means "a person or people of the river." ctto

And on 2018, as they celebrated their 61st Adlaw ng Ramon Magsaysay, they performed an ethnic dance to commemorate such culture which is the "Subanen Dance".

MONDAY FACTS 🤯
The Municipality was named after the late President of the Philippines, Mr. Ramon Magsaysay (1907-1957) on February 13, 1957 who created the municipality by virtue of Executive Order Number 239 Republic Act Number 2788 marked the renaming of Liargao to Ramon Magsaysay on June 19, 1960.
But long before the Spaniards came to the Province of Zamboanga del Sur, "Liargao" was the original name of the area. Why? The Subanen’s, are the natives of the area named the place “LIGAW” meaning “lost in the way” due to the unusual direction of the river. The river seems to be going up to the Mountain instead of going down to the sea.
The Subanen continued to occupy the area until sometime during the later part of 1940 when group of Christian Farmers came and settled in the barrio of Liargao which was then still a part of the Municipality of Aurora. These farmers organized themselves and founded the Dipolo Farmers Association with Mr. Olympio Rada as the President.
Migration was made possible due to the road opening from Campo IV to Liargao which was the only passable road by motor vehicles. Through this initial development, the pioneer settlers and some political leaders headed by Mr. Santiago Sumicad and Mr. Valentin Peralta tried hard to work for the creation of Liargao into a municipality but were unsuccessful in their efforts.
