Egypt Day 9 - Sakkara & Memphis: Today we hopped a short flight from Luxor back to Cairo. We then visited the desert farm lands to the site of Egypt's first pyramids, Sakkara and the museum in Memphis. Tomorrow we head back home. It's been an enriching 9 days of heritage, culture and history. We are sad to leave but feeling very blessed to have been able to visit this amazing country! ✈️

Egypt Day 8 - Luxor: Today we visited the amazing Karnak Temple in Egypt. This temple was once the center of all religious life in ancient Egypt and I am fascinated by its history and beauty. The temple complex features several temples, sacred lakes, and sanctuaries that were dedicated to various gods and goddesses. Great Hypostyle Hall, which has 134 massive columns and is the largest room of any temple in the world. We then strolled the streets of Luxor. 🏰✨

Together we biked through the village and visited the Funtasia Project Center where we learned about the Planeterra project at this location over tea with our guide. Planeterra is a non-profit that supports local communities through sustainable tourism. Afterwards, we set off on a guided visit to the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. Seeing King Tut’s mummified body was pretty amazing. Ancient history truly comes to life in this awe-inspiring place. We had lunch with a local family on the West Bank of the Nile. 😍

Egypt Day 6 Part 2 - Kom Ombo: in the afternoon visited The Kom Ombo Temple. It is dedicated to two gods: Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon-headed god. The temple is divided into two sections, each with its own entrance, halls, sanctuaries, and rooms. The right side of the temple is dedicated to Sobek, who was the god of the Nile, fertility, and crocodiles. The temple is located on the east bank of the Nile River, and it offers stunning views of the river and the surrounding landscape.

Egypt Day 6 Part 1 -Sailing the Nile on a felucca: Today we traveled from Aswan to Kom Ombo by sailing the Nile on a traditional Egyptian felucca! Since there are 16 in our group, we split into two groups so we could spread out on the feluccas. A support boat followed us which we ate lunch on and had restroom breaks. We stopped along the bank for people to swim. I visited with some local farmers in lieu of swimming. There can be bacteria in the Nile so we opted not to partake in the swim.

Egypt Day 5 - Abu Simbel: we started our day with a 4 am departure for Abu Simbel. Located just north of the Sudanese border, Abu Simbel is one of Egypt’s grandest temples. The road to get there is only open from 5am to 5pm. It’s only about 31 miles from Sudan but very well protected by Lake Nasser and the Egyptian Army. Built during the rule of Ramses the II this structure was almost swallowed by the Nile, but now stands safe and sound thanks to some crafty archaeologists and UNESCO. They actually moved the temple back about 200m. It took 4 years to literally move the mountain it was carved into. We were blown away by the intricate carvings and imposing statues, as well as the stunning location by Lake Nasser in the Nubian Desert. It was a long 3 hr drive from Aswan but so worth it! On the way back we stopped at an essential oil factory so now we smell like sweat and lavender. 🤣. It’s 111 degrees at 5pm. We are back at the hotel relaxing until dinner with the group tonight.

Egypt Day 4 Part 2 - Aswan: Tonight we sailed the magnificent Nile. It looked like something out of a Disney movie. Then we stopped in a local Nubian village and had dinner prepared by a local Egyptian family! The tour we are on incorporates locals for a truly authentic experience that also gives back to the local communities through sustainable tourism. I can't tell you how nice the people are here and how willing they are to share their culture. I'm in awe! ⛵️

Egypt Day 4 Part 1 - Aswan: Well the overnight train was an adventure for sure! Not sure I slept much. We arrived in Aswan this morning and it’s a stark difference from the hustle and bustle of Cairo. It’s more of a mix of Nubian and Syrian as there are a lot of Syrian refugees here. We got off the train and headed right to Philae Temple which is on Agilkia Island in Lake Nasser and WOW, it was an incredible sight! The intricate carvings and hieroglyphics truly showcased the history and culture of the ancient Egyptians. I know know what an oasis is. You literally see sand dunes and then lush vegetation on the banks of the Nile. It’s magical. Tonight we will take a short boat ride to have dinner with a Nubian family but for now we are relaxing and avoiding the 109 degree heat. 🚈🕌

Egypt Day 2 - Cairo: We just finished touring Coptic and Islamic Cairo! 🚶‍♂️🕌🕍

We visited the iconic Citadel of Saladin, where we had a breathtaking view of Cairo's skyline. Then we explored the stunning Mohamed Ali Mosque, with its intricate designs and Islamic architecture. After that, we were immersed in the Christian heritage of Cairo as we visited the enchanting Hanging Church and St. Sergius and Bacchus Church. Finally, we ended our tour at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George.

St. Sergius is where Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus stayed for three months. It’s just amazing to know these building have existed this long.

Egypt Day 1 - Alexandria: We arrived late last night about 2 am Egypt time. Our official tour doesn't start until tomorrow so we hired a local guide to take us to Alexandria, Egypt! We visited some incredible historical sites including the Catacomb Tomb, Pompey's Pillar, Citadel and Library of Alexandria, and Morsy Abu El Abbas Mosque. The intricate carvings and decorations at the Catacomb Tomb were fascinating, while the views from the top of the citadel were absolutely breathtaking. The Library of Alexandria was closed today as Friday and Saturday are their “weekends”. We are exhausted and the trip has just begun!
